Degree Programs in Data Science at the School of Information in the States (미국 정보 대학의 데이터사이언스 학위 현황 연구)

  • This preliminary study examined the degree programs in data science at the School of Information in the States. The focus of this study was the data science degrees offered at the School of Information awarded by the 64 Library and Information Science (LIS) programs accredited by the American Library Association (ALA) in 2022. In addition, this study examined the degrees, majors, minors, specialized tracks, and certificates in data science, as well as the potential careers after earning a data science degree. Overall, eight Schools of Information (iSchools) offered 12 data science degrees. Data science courses at the School of Information focus on topics such as introduction to data science, information retrieval, data mining, database, data and humanities, machine learning, metadata, research methods, data analysis and visualization, internship/capstone, ethics and security, user, policy, and curation and management. Most schools did not offer traditional LIS courses. After earning the data science degree in the School of Information, the potential careers included data scientists, data engineers and data analysts. The researcher hopes the findings of this study can be used as a starting point to discuss the directions of data science programs from the perspectives of the information field, specifically the degrees, majors, minors, specialized tracks and certificates in data science.

A Study on the Archival Graduate Programs in the Schools of Library and Information Science in English-Speaking Canada (캐나다의 기록학 대학원 교육프로그램에 관한 연구)

  • The purpose of this study is to identify useful factors for the curriculum development of the archival program in Korea by analyzing archival graduate programs of the Schools of Library and Information Science in English-speaking Canada. Name and history of the schools, degrees, credits, required and elective courses, practice, research, md faculty of archival prgrams, and the official guidelines of ACA and SAA are compared by analyzing web sites and literature review. It is found that Canadian LIS schools offer independent archival programs with a separate MAS degree or a specialization. University of British Columbia, the first LIS school that has a separate MAS degree program, provides a systematically developed curriculum. It also reveals that Canadian archival programs are based on their own principle·md SAA guidelines because ACA guidelines are out of date. Based upon the analysis of the archival programs in Canada, the current situations of the archival graduate programs in Korea are compared and several suggestions ale made f3r the direction of successful archival education in Korea in the end.

A Study on Effect of the Book Curation Education Program Using Experiential Economy Theory on Perceived Value, Continuous Participation Intent (체험경제이론에 의한 북큐레이션 교육 프로그램이 지각된 가치와 지속적 참여 의도에 미치는 영향에 관한 연구)

  • By developing and implementing a book curation education program that reflects the experiential economy theory, this study aims to verify the effect that experience perception of the program has on continuous participation intention and perceived value of the program. Teaching and learning activities of book curation education programs were organized so that practitioners can experience activities for 4 experience element, entertainment experience, educational experience, escapist experience, esthetic experience according to experience economic theory. This study surveyed 195 peoples who participated in the program to measure the effectiveness of the program. As a result of analysis, research hypothesis 1 (the perception of experiences in the book curation education program affects the perceived value of the program) revealed that aesthetic and entertainment experiences were significant, and research hypothesis 2 (the perception of experience in the book curation education program affects the intention to continue participating in the program) showed that all other factors except educational experiences were significant.

  • Local Arts Organization has performed various events in the provinces such as performances, exhibitions, competitions, and festivals, has been a place where local artists share information of arts, and has contributed greately to the development of art culture in the provinces for a long time. Records of Local Arts Organization are historical records showing the level and value of past and present local cultural arts, so systematic management and preservation is necessary. Also, since the records of Local Arts Organization are high in interest and demand of users, exhibition services are needed to show them effectively. Therefore, this study shows how to construct a Local Arts Organization based on CollectiveAccess, which is open software, to manage Local Arts Organization and provide exhibition services.

Toward Research Records Management in Government-funded Research Institutes (정부출연연구기관의 연구기록물 관리를 위한 수집 개선방안에 관한 연구)

  • The purpose of this study is to propose an approach to acquire research records effectively in context of government-funded research institutes via case studies and a questionnaire survey. For the case studies, a report from Joint Information Systems Committee JISC in UK, the University of Melbourne policy on the management of research data and records, a report from Canadian Association of Research Libraries(CARL) are analyzed. In addition, a survey questionnaire is conducted for forty nine government-funded research institutes and forty three responses out of 49 institutes are collected and analyzed. Based on the analyses on case studies and responses of the survey, an approach for research records management with four aspects is proposed: regulatory policy, best practices and manuals, professionals for research records, and outreach programs of individual reseach institutes for acquiring appropriate research records.

Local Autonomy and Training of public Librarians (지방자치와 사서직 공무원 연수)

  • A public librarian is an occupation, which requires long-term. continuous training and difficult study to acquire and cultivate professional knowledge and skills. It is a necessity to achieve new knowledge, information and skills via appropriate retraining. A training system is the method which gives chances of retraining to public librarians. After examining some of the problems with the existing training system, it is apparent that the direction of training system needs to be decentralized. That is each local branch should be autonomous in terms of new training for librarians. For the method of training system, each autonomous unit would integrate the different theories to apply to the community-at-large and invite practical specialists from the local community to lecture. The training classes would be elective in that the each librarian could choose the classes he/she wants to take and give them credits for that, but the certificate for the class would also go towards completion for the required technical training. Finally, the utilization of cyber-education should be introduced, and the library association's role strengthened, to help public librarians cultivate their specialties.

Health-related Courses' Topics and Contents of ALA-accredited Library and Information Science Programs (문헌정보학 건강 관련 과목의 주제 및 내용 분석: ALA 인가를 받은 프로그램을 중심으로)

  • This study aims to examine the current status of health-related courses at the graduate level from American Library Association-accredited LIS programs and to identify the core topics and contents that have been covered in those courses by analyzing the course syllabi. Findings reveal that 44 out of 61 Library and Information Science (LIS) programs were offering at least one health-related course and the three most offered courses were 'health information resources', 'health informatics', and 'consumer health information (CHI)'. We collected a total of 21 course syllabi available online in the three areas and further analyzed their course descriptions, weekly topics, readings, and assignments. The findings of the study could be valuable for instructors who want to design or upgrade health-related courses in LIS programs.

The Effect of Alternative Material Satisfaction of the Visually Impaired on the Social Participation and Mediation Effect of Self-Efficacy (시각장애인의 대체자료 이용 만족도가 사회참여에 미치는 영향과 자기효능감의 매개효과)

  • This study attempted to verify the impacts of the level of satisfaction in the user of alternative materials among people with visual impairment on their social participation, and the mediation effect of self-efficacy during such process. The subject of the study was the visually impaired who were live in Gyeonggi Province and were registered in the Korea Blind Union. The data of final 120 participants through a telephone survey were analyzed. The subject of the study used the recorded materials the most for the purpose of leisure and information research mainly at the braille library. The analysis of the mediation effect demonstrated that the level of satisfaction in the user of alternative materials among people with visual impairment had a statistically significant influence on social participation, and self-efficacy had a full mediation effect. These results imply the importance of alternative materials to assure the right to information access which can ultimately expand the social engagement of the visually impaired. Based on these study results, political suggestions are proposed to vitalize alternative materials in the future.

Continuing Education for the Library and Information Professionals : Present Situation and Need Assessment (문헌정보전문직을 위한 계속교육에 관한 연구 : 현황과 요구분석)

  • To investigate the present states and analyze the need of continuing education, a survey was done to the library and information professionals. Based on the personal membership file of the Korean Library Association, 292 members were selected using $25\%$ systematic sampling method. Questionnaires were mailed to them and $80\%$ returned. Of the total respondents. $90\%$ want to participate continuing education, however only $50\%$have a formal continuing education experience during last 3 years. Informal educational efforts are also weak and show much individual differences. $67\%$ of the libraries encourage continuing education but only $25\%$ of the respondents were provided with time and money for participation. The most favored mode of the continuing education Is one week course specialized In particular topic$(31.1\%)$ or area$(25.5\%)$. New methods, such as CD-ROM. online etc. were also preferred. Respondents regard professional association, society, and the library Information science department of university as desirable leading organization for continuing education. Among the 16 possible topics to be educated, respondents showed substantially higher Interest(more than $50\%$) In 5topics, and there were significant need differences In 7 topics among groups divided by library type.

  • Recently, according to demands for a mobility right of people with disabilities, the use of powered mobility device has been rapidly increased and recharging facilities have been set up in many places of country. But the standards for the installation and management of the facilities are not clear and many problems are brought up in operating the facilities. Therefore, regulations and realities of recharging facilities were investigated and the user survey was progressed. On the basis of the research results, a rational and efficient installation and management plan was drawn up. The plan suggests that the recharging facilities should be installed in a building managed by government and many kinds of public building like library, theater, sports facilities, department store, museum, etc. Further, the recharging facilities should secure independent place which have specified area for protecting of privacy and provide some amenities for people with disabilities to enhance the conveniences.
