Analysis of the Consumer's Intentions and Effects on the Introduction of Kimchi into a Geographical Indication System in Major Export Markets (김치 지리적표시제 도입에 대한 주요 수출시장 소비자 의향 및 효과 분석)

  • Although Kimchi is a Korean traditional food, domestic consumption has been decreasing steadily and the trade inversion phenomenon has reached a serious level due to the surge of Chinese Kimchi imports. Moreover, cases where foreign Kimchi is transformed illegally into Korean Kimchi are frequent, which impedes the expansion of Korean Kimchi exports. To sustain the Korean Kimchi industry in a situation where the domestic and overseas conditions are deteriorating, it is necessary to positively review the introduction of Kimchi into a geographical indication (GI) system. This study examined the intention of foreign consumers to purchase Korean Kimchi with GI and analyzed the impact on the trade balance. Approximately 42.8% of 500 Japanese consumers answered that they would purchase Korean Kimchi with GI and they were willing to pay 7.8% more than the present price. Approximately 78.7% of 300 Taiwanese consumers replied that they purchase it and would pay 25.1% more. In addition, Japanese and Taiwanese consumers reported that they expected to increase their Korean Kimchi purchases by 21.9 and 22.4%, respectively. Based on the survey results, the effects of the trade balance were measured using the methodology of a preliminary impact assessment using the KREI-KASMO model. The trade balance of Kimchi is expected to improve slightly at an annual average of 11.718.6 million US$ to as much as 27.7~35.8 million US$.

Impacts of Abnormal Weather Factors on Rice Production (패널분석-확률효과모형에 의한 등숙기 이상기상이 쌀 단수에 미치는 영향 분석)

  • The yield of rice production is affected severely by abnormal weather events, such as flood, drought, high temperature etc. The objective of this paper is to assess impacts of abnormal weather events on rice production, using a panel model which analyzes both cross-section data and ti- me series data. Abnormal weather is defined as the weather event which goes beyond the range of ${\pm}2{\sigma}$ from the average of a weather factor. The result of an analysis on impacts of high temperature on rice production showed that the yield of rice was decreased 5.8% to 16.3% under the conditions of extremely high temperature, and it was decreased 8.8 to 20.8% under the conditions of both extremely high and heavy rain. Adaptation strategies, development of new varieties enduring high temperature and heavy rain, adaptation of crop insurance, modernization of irrigation facilities are needed to minimize the impacts of abnormal weather on rice production, and to stabilize farmers' income.

A Correlation between Growth Factors and Meteorological Factors by Growing Season of Onion (양파의 생육시기별 생육요인과 기상요인 간의 관계 탐색)

  • Onions are a representative produce that requires supply-demand control measures due to large fluctuations in production and price by growing season. Accurate forecasts of crop production can improve the effectiveness of such measures. However, it is challenging to obtain accurate estimates of crop productivity for onions because they are mainly grown on the open fields. The objective of this study was to perform the empirical analysis of the relationship between factors for crop growth and meteorological conditions, which can support the development of models to predict crop growth and production. The growth survey data were collected from open fields. The survey data included the weight of above ground organs as well as that of the bulbs. The estimates of meteorological data were also compiled for the given fields. Correlation analysis between these factors was performed. The random forest was also used to compare the importance of the meteorological factors by the growth stage. Our results indicated that insolation in early March had a positive effect on the growth of the above-ground. There was a negative correlation between precipitation and the growth of the above-ground at the end of March although it has been suggested that drought can deter the growth of onion. The negative effects of precipitation and daylight hours on the growth of the above-ground and under-ground were significant during the harvest period. These meteorological factors identified by growth stage can be used to develop models for onion growth and production forecast.

A study on the estimation of onion's bulb weight using multi-level model (다층모형을 활용한 양파 구중 추정 연구)

  • Onions show severe volatility in production and price because crop conditions highly depend on the weather. The government has designated onions as a sensitive agricultural product, and prepared various measures to stabilize the supply and demand. First of all, preemptive and reliable information on predicting onion production is essential to implement appropriate and effective measures. This study aims to contribute to improving the accuracy of production forecasting by developing a model to estimate the final weight of onions bulb. For the analysis, multi-level model is used to reflect the hierarchical data characteristics consisting of above-ground growth data in individual units and meteorological data in parcel units. The result shows that as the number of leaf, stem diameter, and plant height in early May increase, the bulb weight increases. The amount of precipitation as well as the number of days beyond a certain temperature inhibiting carbon assimilation have negative effects on bulb weight, However, the daily range of temperature and more precipitation near the harvest season are statistically significant as positive effects. Also, it is confirmed that the fitness and explanatory power of the model is improved by considering the interaction terms between level-1 and level-2 variables.

Factors Influencing Purchase Intentions of Organic Processed Foods (유기 가공식품 구입 의향 영향 요인)

  • This study was designed to find out consumers' behavior towards eco-friendly processed foods and to investigate the relationship between consumers' purchase intention of eco-friendly and organic processed foods, depending on the country of origin. Five hundred consumers were taken from all over the country for an empirical analysis. The results indicate that consumers' satisfaction with a certificate system of eco-friendly products is relatively high. In addition, it is found that consumers give more credit to the safety of domestic organic foods than imported organic foods. The study implies that consumers perceiving the importance of the country of origin are more likely to buy domestic organic foods. Furthermore, the importance of the country of origin and age have a positive relationship with the purchase intention of domestic organic foods.

  • Since ancient times, ginseng has been cultivated in Korea, and related cultures are also rich. However, the domestic ginseng industry is currently facing many crises. As a source of ginseng, Korea needs to come up with a strategy to cope with the crisis of the ginseng industry and implement it efficiently and effectively using limited resources. This study used the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) to analyze the priority of policies so that ginseng policies can be effectively implemented. The survey was conducted by dividing into two groups of experts, 'policy managers' and 'field experts'. As a result of the study, policy managers seem to believe that the consumption of ginseng is important for the development of the ginseng industry. On the other hand, the field expert group believes that the government should take the initiative to increase the supply capacity of the ginseng industry. Through this study, it will be possible to help in determining the importance of policy, recognizing that the viewpoints of policy can be different for the ginseng industry to develop.

A Study on the Consumers' Perception and the Improvement for the Use-by-Date of Food (식품 소비기한에 대한 소비자 인식 및 개선에 대한 연구)

  • The purpose of this study is to help operate and manage the new food period system by investigating consumer perception of sell-by-date and use-by-date, and change of purchasing and consumption period by food period label. Although they have opinions that fit the purpose of introducing the system, such as the need to introduce a use by date, extending the food intake period, and reducing food waste, they still lack an accurate understanding of the system, so education or publicity is needed. In addition, no matter what form of use by date is introduced, products with food expiration date are still likely to be returned or discarded. Therefore, it is desirable to adjust the setting criteria or safety factor for each deadline rather than changing the food period labeling method. In order to reduce consumer confusion and food waste, it is judged that the parallel marking of the sell by date and use by date is appropriate.

An Empirical Analysis on the Effectiveness of the Korean Beef Cow Fattening Support Program (한우 암소비육지원사업 효과 실증분석)

  • The Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs, Hanwoo Association and Nonghyup have discussed proactive reduction measures for cows in response to concerns about an oversupply of hanwoo to ensure supply stability. This study aims to empirically analyze whether the cow fattening support program is being implemented in line with its objectives. Based on the analysis of beef traceability data, the slaughter age of participating cows was reduced by 7.6 to 14.7 months compared to non-participating cows. And heifer was reduced 1.5 months in their slaughter age. In case of parity, participating cows showed a reduction of 1.4 compared to non-participating cows. Through the SUR model, an analysis was conducted to examine the effect of the cow fattening support program on the suppression of calf production numbers. The analysis results showed that the calf production numbers are positively influenced by the number of fertile cow and the quantity of semen sales. Furthermore, it is estimated that calf production decreased as the fat index increased, and during the period when the cow fattening support program was implemented, an average monthly suppression of 3,558 calves was observed.

Causes of Investment on the Broiler's House of Farmers: Focusing on Hold-up Problem (육계 사육농가의 계사 투자에 대한 원인 분석: 홀드업 문제를 중심으로)

  • This paper analyzes whether under-investment due to hold-up exists in broiler industry or not by using survey data on broiler growers. When a grower who has facilities to be required for contract is aware of the possibility of being held-up by an integrator, he/she may invest in relation-specific asset less than is optimal. The result shows that when a grower thinks that finding a new integrator in the region is difficult after the current contract being terminated, under-investment exists. When a grower has the experience that a current integrator required her/him to do something not written on the contract, she/he may have invested less. However it is not statistically significant.

  • The insect industry in Korea has been supported by the Act of Fostering and Supporting Insect Industry since 2010. Based on the Act, insect breeders are entitled as farmers. However, the insect industry is not included in the Fundamental Act of Agriculture, Rural Community and Food Industry which defines all concepts, such as agriculture, farmers, and agricultural products. Legally and strictly speaking, there is no method to defense the insect industry when an argument is raised that insect industry is not included into agriculture, so persons who breed insects are not eligible for all agricultural supports and subsidies of the government. Thus, it is necessary to clear the legal status of insect industry by revising the related laws and regulations.
