  • This study investigated the perception of science philosophy education targeting 150 elementary school teachers in metropolitan cities and provinces. The questionnaire survey on the perception of the philosophy of science education was composed of a 5-point Likert scale based on the interest and experience of the philosophy of science, the reason for difficulty in using it, and the introduction method, the expected effect. As a result of the survey, elementary school teachers' awareness of the interest and necessity of the philosophy of science was generally high, while the experience of learning and teaching the philosophy of science was low. In addition, to the reason why it was difficult to utilize the philosophy of science, teachers answered that there was insufficient teacher training and development of teaching and learning methods. As a way to introduce the philosophy of science in science education, it was thought that it was necessary to combine the concept learning and inquiry method, and elementary school teachers' perception of the expected effect of using the philosophy of science was generally high. The results of this study are meaningful in that they provide basic data on the direction of the introduction of the philosophy of science in elementary science education.

  • This study investigates the pre-service teacher trainees' reactions to and evaluations about the earth science teaching method that utilizes songs. The subjects of the study were 81 university students in teacher training institutes for primary schools and secondary schools. The researcher used songs which the subjects judged to be reflecting some of the natural phenomena related to the earth science. The teacher trainees were taught some of the earth science concepts with the help of the selected songs. Discussions about the possibilities of the songs as an ai d to science teaching were also encouraged. The teacher trainees demonstrated positive reactions to the teaching method, and expressed their intention to use songs in their future teaching. The method also inspired the trainees to be inquisitive in their everyday life and seek other effective teaching methods.

  • In this study, we investigated the current status of the teacher education curriculum and the recruitment of general science teachers, and the ways to improve them as suggested by Professors from the Department of Science Education. Most science education departments have not required double majors in general science, and there are wide differences in the number of students who take the general science programs. There is not any department that requires science courses other than its own science major courses when students get only their own in-depth science major certificate. A few departments provide integrated science courses such as history of science, scientific creativity, integrated science, and so forth. Most professors revealed negative perceptions toward 'a compulsory requirement of double majors in general science' with other in-depth science majors such as physics, chemistry, biology, and earth sciences. The majority of professors also suggested providing elective courses in integrated science-related subjects. Regarding general science majored teacher employment, most professors did not agree with separate employment for the general science teacher, although they agreed with the necessity of the general science teaching certificate. They also suggested that preservice teachers need to take science courses other than their own specialized science majors for the in-depth science teaching certificate. Based on the results, we suggested ways to improve the teacher education curriculum and the recruitment of general science teachers.

  • The purpose of this study is to critically examine science content and science education from the 'essential-holistic' perspective, in particular, among the core disciplines constituting the teacher education curriculum. In this study, we first, analyzed the definition of the 'essential-holistic' perspective, the philosophical background, and the relationship with the practices in-depth, and then, from the 'essential-holistic' perspective, conducted an inquiry into the essence of science content and science education. The results of this study are as follows: first, according to the 'essential-holistic' perspective, science content is a study that explores the science practices and systematizes the results of that inquiry. Major activities of science content include the establishment and implementation of 'science for teachers' and participation in the development of science curriculum (textbook). Second, science education according to the 'essential-holistic' perspective is a study about in-depth exploration of essential problems in science education phenomena rooted in the science practices and the practice of good teaching. More specifically, science education is a field that carries out work related to inviting, participating, and guiding students to grow into science practices (i.e. initiating into practices). The main activities of science education related to this include activities ranging from the development of the science curriculum (textbook) to teaching and evaluation (recording). In this study, we discussed important tasks to be carried out in the future based on the results of the study.

  • The purpose of this study was to explore practical meanings of convergence education and to seek ways of implementing it in school science education. The study adopted focus group interview method in order to elicit science teachers' perceptions and practical knowledge related to various ways of integrating educational aims and contents from the perspectives of science education. Two focus group interviews were held with four science teachers with the themes of the concept and potential of convergence education, and the implementation and systemic support, respectively. The qualitative data was analyzed by deriving major themes comprising teachers' perception on convergence education: they are 1) related concepts and rationales, 2) contents, methods, and assessment, 3) the characteristics of the science subject that make it suitable for convergent education, 4) teacher perception and professionalism required for implementing convergent education, and finally 5) environmental conditions for putting the idea into practice. Based on this result, the study discusses conceptual and practical issues for implementing convergence education in ways that contribute to overcoming the problems of the traditional educational system and reorienting science education towards the future society.

  • Constructivism has had a great influence on science education over the last two decades. The purpose of this article is twofold: First, to describe the characteristics of constructivism and, second, to suggest an ideal forms of science education in Korea as implied in constructivism. A review of the literatures in the first area shows that constructivism is philosophical/psychological view which believe in the social nature of the construction of scientific knowledge and its learning. And the analyses of a few schools of constructivism suggest decision-making as a goal of science education, learning as the active construction of meaning through interaction between learner and learning environments, and discussion and cooperation as appropriate teaching strategies. At the same time, the results necessitate teaching ethical aspects of science in the secondary schools, and also imply that performance assessment must be emphasized in evaluation of science education.
