  • This paper describes the structural behavior and the ultimate strengths of circular hollow steel (CHS) sections based on a series of compression tests. The ultimate strengths of CHS section columns are mainly dependent on both diameter-thickness ratio and column slenderness ratio. For the CHS sections with a high diameter-thickness ratio, an elastic or an inelastic local buckling may occur prior to the overall buckling, and it may decrease the column strength. Test sections were fabricated from SM400 steel plate of 2.8 mm and 3.2 mm in thickness and were tested to failure. The diameter-thickness ratios of the test sections ranged from 45 to 170 to investigate the effect of local buckling on the column strength. The compression tests indicated that the CHS sections of lower diameter-thickness ratio than the yield limit in the current design specifications showed an inelastic local buckling and a significant post-buckling strength in the local mode. Their ultimate stresses were larger than the nominal yield stress. It was known that the allowable stresses of the sections predicted by the Korean Highway Bridge Design Specifications (2005) were too conservative in comparison with test results. The Direct Strength Method which was newly developed was calibrated for application to the CHS sections by the experimental and numerical results. The Direct Strength Method proposed can predict properly the ultimate strength of CHS section columns whether a local buckling and an overall buckling occur nearly simultaneously or not.

  • The plastic stress distribution method and the strain compatibility method are the two representative methods to calculate the P-M interaction strength of RCFT (rectangular concrete filled tube) columns. The plastic stress distribution method is approximate while the stress compatibility method should approach the exact solution if accurate constitutive relations of the materials involved are used. Recent study by the authors pointed out that, because of lack of accurate constitutive model for the concrete confined by the rectangular steel tube, no strain compatibility method according to the current structural provisions provides a satisfactory prediction of the P-M interaction strength of RCFT columns under various material combinations. An empirical constitutive model which can capture the stress-strain characteristics of the confined concrete of RCFT columns is proposed based on analyzing extensive exisitng test database. The key idea was to define the concrete crushing strain as a function of steel-to-concrete strength ratio and width-to-thickness ratio of steel tube. It was shown that the proposed model leads to more accurate and more consistent prediction of the P-M interaction strength of RCFT columns under general design conditions.

  • A direct shear member resists external forces through the shear transfer of reinforcing bars placed at the concrete interface. The current concrete structural design code uses empirical formulas based on the shear friction analogy, which is applied to the horizontal shear of concrete composite beams. However, in the case of a member with a large amount of reinforcing bars, the shear strength obtained through the empirical formula is lower than the measured value. In this paper, the limit state of newly constructed composite beams on an existing concrete girder is defined using stress field theory, and material constitutive laws are applied to gain horizontal shear strength while considering the tension-stiffening and softening effects of concrete struts. A simplified method of calculating the shear strength is proposed, which was validated by comparing it with the related design code provisions. As a result, it was confirmed that the method generally shows a similar tendency to the experimental results when the shear reinforcing bar yields, unlike the regulations of the design code, where differences in the predicted value of shear strength occur according to the shear reinforcement ratio.

  • The purpose of this study is to compare the results of shear-deformation of saturated sand under the 3 dimensional stress with the results of simple torque-shear test already reported, Japaness standard sand, Toyoura sand, was chosen as test sample and the equipments of the department of soil mechancis laboratory of Nihon University were used. The conclusions obtained are as follows. 1). The friction angle of sand (${\phi}$) is proportional to the density regardless of the condition of stress-strain. This is because of the reason that the lower the cell pressure becomes, the larger the volume changes in case of the same density. 2). The value of ${\varphi}$ are variable according to the condition of stress-strain in the same density, and ${\phi}_dTS$ is larger than ${\phi}_dPS$ and ${\phi}_dTC$ when cell pressure is low. 3). ${\phi}_dPS$ is larger then ${\phi}_dTS$, under the same denstiy and same cell pressure. Thus the shear strength of sand is decided according to the condition of stress-strain 4). the relationship between the stress ratio (q/p) and strain increment ration in the plane strain test is linear regardless of the density and the cell pressure of the test sample.

  • Adfreeze bond strength is a primary design parameter, which determines bearing capacity of pile foundation in frozen ground. It is reported that adfreeze bond strength is influenced by various affecting factors like freezing temperature, confining pressure, characteristics of pile surface, soil type, etc. However, several limited researches have been performed to obtain adfreeze bond strength, for past studies considered only few affecting factors such as freezing temperature and type of pile structures. Therefore, there exists a limitation of estimating the design parameter of pile foundation with various factors in frozen ground. In this study, artificial neural network algorithm was involved to predict adfreeze bond strength with various affecting factors. From past five studies, 137 data for various experimental conditions were collected. It was divided by 100 training data and 37 testing data in random manner. Based on the analysis result, it was found that it is necessary to consider various affecting factors for the prediction of adfreeze bond strength and the prediction with artificial neural network algorithm provides enough reliability. In addition, the result of parametric study showed that temperature and pile type are primary affecting factors for adfreeze bond strength. And it was also shown that vertical stress influences only certain temperature zone, and various soil types and loading speeds might cause the change of evolution trend for adfreeze bond strength.

  • Investigation of in-situ ground in cold region is difficult due to low accessibility and environmental factors. In this study, correlation between dynamic cone resistance and shear strength is suggested to estimate the strength of frozen soils by using instrumented dynamic cone penetrometer. Tests were conducted in freezing chamber after preparing sand-silt mixture with 2.3% water content. Vertical stresses of 5 kPa and 10 kPa were applied during freezing, shearing, and penetration phase to compare the dynamic cone resistance and shear strength. The dynamic cone resistance, additionally, is calculated to minimize the effect of energy loss during hammer impact. Experimental results show that as the shear strength increases, the dynamic cone penetration index (DCPI) decreases nonlinearly, while the dynamic cone resistance increases linearly. This study provides the useful correlation to evaluate strength properties of the frozen soils from the dynamic cone penetration and direct shear tests.

  • This paper presents the engineering characteristics of the Samcheok organic soil which contains a large portion of organic matter and high natural water content. A series of lab tests shows that the measured liquid limit is quite different depending on preparing methods of specimens. The values tested with natural condition are higher up to 4 times than thole of the oven dry specimen. It is shown that the organic soils fail at large strain and do not show peak stress in the stress strain relationships. Also strength increase ratios, which are measured 0.43 to 0.65 in this tests, are significantly higher than those of the soft clay without organic matter. The consolidation tests indicate that the verti'cal and horizontal Permeabilities are almost the same. For the remolded samples is reduced from 112 to 116 of the vertical permeability An increase of organic matter or water content of the organic soils results in an increase of the coefficient of secondary consolidation. The increase rate is slow below 15 percents of the organic contents while the rate becomes higher above the value.

  • In the part of geotechnical engineering, soils are classified as either the coarse grained soil or the fine-grained soil following the fine content($F_c$=50%) according to the granularity, and appropriate design codes are used respectively to represent their mechanical behaviour. However, sand-clay mixtures, which are typically referred to as intermediate soils, cannot be easily categorized as either sand or clay. In this study, several monotonic undrained shear tests were carried out on Silica sand fine mixtures with various proportions, and a wide range of soil structures, ranging from one with sand dominating the soil structure to one with fines controlling the behaviour, were prepared using compaction method or pre-consoldation methods in prescribed energy. The shear strength of mixtures below the threshold fines content is observed that as the fines content increases, maximum deviator stress ratio decrease for dense samples while an increase is noted for loose samples. Then, by using the concept of fines content and granular void ratio, the monotonic shear strength of the mixtures was estimated. It was found that the shear behavior of mixtures is greatly dependent on the skeleton structure of sand particles.

  • Recently, a high-strength strand of 2400 MPa was developed using domestic technologies. In 2011, KS D 7002 was revised to cover the newly developed high-strength strands to support their practical usage. Presently, however, discussions and evaluations are not sufficient on the mechanical properties of the strands and their performance in structural members. Also, there were no detailed reviews on the need to revise the current design code for practical use of the high-strength strands. In this study, flexural behavior of a member with the high-strength strands was estimated through sectional analysis and a review and comparison of the domestic and foreign design codes were conducted considering the analysis results. Also, the need for the revision of the design code was discussed. Such discussion especially focused on the estimation of the stress in strand, which related with various issues such as determination methods for yield point of strands, time-dependent loss of prestressing force, estimation of stress in strand at member failure, and net strain limit for ductile failure of member. The discussion revealed that some parts in the design code need a revision and the further studies are required.

  • When the concrete is confined to width direction, stress-strain curve of concrete are different from the uniaxial behavior. In case of normal strength concrete, Mander model are used with concrete material model which considers confining effect. Sakino-Sun model showed experimental result of specimen-level and the highest accuracy. Therefore, Normal strength concrete used Mander model. and High strength concrete used Sakino-Sun model. But there are significant differences from actual data when medium strength concrete used Mander or Sakino-Sun model. and Limit scope of maximum or minimum compressive strength of concrete is not clear when applied to two models. Therefore, In this research, material nonlinear model of confined concrete is suggested when concrete which has 30-40MPa's strength is confined to width direction.
