  • Using TIMSS survey data, we analyzed whether there were any significant changes in the learning environment of middle school science classes over the last 10 years. Our study selected questions from teachers and school principals' questionnaires and divided them by category: science class, teacher professional development, and school environment. The science class components were subdivided into three categories: science learning activities, evaluation, and homework. Within teacher professional development, the sub-categories included teacher training, collaboration to improve teaching, and teacher evaluation. School environment subdivided into two aspects, these being school characteristics and school system. Our research confirmed that there has been a positive change overall in learning environments. However, most classes are teacher-conducted and also teacher-oriented; the proportion of science investigation activities has declined compared against the prior ten years. Our study show that students do not engage in a range of inquiry-related activities. The questions on tests and examinations involve mostly knowledge application and understanding, although recent methods of evaluation show improvement. As for the science teachers, they participate in many professional development programs but focus on science content, science curriculum, and pedagogy. In addition, teachers do not have many opportunities to participate in the training to integrate information technology into science, science assessment, or improving students' critical thinking or inquiry skills. The teachers are satisfied with their profession, and the shortage of science resources does not seem to affect instruction.

  • This study was conducted to investigate nutritional knowledge related to breakfast and dietary behavior of elementary school students by gender and skipping breakfast. The subjects of this study were the 6th grade elementary school students (Total 237; 119 males and 118 females) in Daejeon. The group who ate breakfast six to seven times per week was 58.6%; The group who ate breakfast zero to five times per week was 41.4%. Most of subjects' families (84.4%) were 'nuclear family' and 63.8% of mothers held jobs. There was a significant difference between family income and skipping breakfast. As for the type of breakfast, 79.0% of the male students and 81.4% of female students answered 'cooked rice' and the reasons for skipping breakfast were 'no appetite' followed by 'not enough time', 'over sleeping'. In the eating breakfast group, frequency of having breakfast with family was higher compared to the skipping breakfast group. Total scores of nutritional knowledge related to breakfast in the female students were significantly higher than those of the male students. Also significant differences were found on such questions as 'the relation between eating breakfast and body weight control' and 'importance of breakfast' by skipping breakfast. The dietary behavior scores of the group who ate breakfast were higher than those of the group who skipped breakfast. Therefore, a need exists to develop and distribute a simple breakfast menu that contains Korean-style food and can be more appetizing and appealing to Korean elementary school students. Also it is necessary to develop a systemic awareness program that emphasize the importance of breakfast and the harmfulness of skipping breakfast.

  • Until now, various educational budgets, facilities, and programs have been put into school education, but the results have not been clearly evaluated. This study presents a model to analyze the effectiveness of educational support for students in high schools across the country. In this model, we first use EM cluster analysis to make clusters with similar inputs for school operation, and then calculate the relative efficiency in each cluster by using Network DEA analysis. The Network DEA analysis has a two-stage structure where the first stage uses six inputs in terms of school infrastructure to generate outputs such as the number of academic persistence. In the Network DEA analysis, the second stage uses 10 inputs in terms of school programs to generate outputs such as the number of enrollees to higher learning and the number of employees and per capita usage of library as the connection variable. Based on the efficiency analysis results, Tier analysis is performed by applying the Euclidean distance to select targets for benchmarking. In this study, we applied the model to analyze the efficiency of educational support by collecting data regarding student education support in general and vocational high school nationwide. The stepwise benchmarking method proposed that the target be selected for efficiency improvement step by step, taking into account inefficient school elements to complement the problem of the choice of benchmarking targets. Based on this study, it is expected that schools with low efficiency of educational support for students will be used as basic data for stepwise benchmarking for efficient operation of educational support for students.

  • This study presents how the engineering ethics instructional modules have been developed based on Korean culture and how they are implemented into the existing engineering curricula at Sungkyunkwan University. The engineering ethics instructional modules were designed to be taught by engineering faculty members who did not have any teaching experience in ethics. As a result, it was determined that the engineering ethics instructional modules should include a detailed instructor lesson plan and all supporting resources such as slides (Power Point base), and handouts, or assessment units (pre- and post-test). Two 75 minute modules developed in this study consist of the diverse instructional activities for various student group sizes. In order to improve students' interests and classroom attention, various visual and audio resources such as famous movies, cartoons, and poems were included in the instructional resources. In addition, a number of case studies which might happen in the students' daily lives were chosen. The resulting ethical module No. 1 has been instructed in the existing engineering classes during the 1st semester in 2007. Overall, the students reported positive impressions of the modules and the faculty members also reported favorable perceptions of the modules. Also, team based activities encouraged students to participate in constructing the event trees, which are a basic analysis tool for ethics case studies. The results of this study will provide a guideline of implementing engineering ethics into the engineering curricula to other engineering programs and schools.

  • Recent studies have indicated that boys show better scientific achievements compared to those of girls. It is also a general conception that boys would be better than girls in terms of scientific creative performances and potential, although there have been few studies to support the general opinion. As the gifted education in Korea is progressing very rapidly, the importance of understanding the creative characteristics of gifted boys and girls has been increased. In the present study, we have compared and analyzed three different measures of creativity utilizing 135 gifted students (77 boys and 58 girls) to provide an empirical evidence for the different degrees of creative performances between gifted boys and girls. The instruments used to measure diverse aspects of creativity include the Torrance Test of Creativity (TTCT), the Test of Creative Problem-solving and Finding in Science (CPFS), and the Creative Behavioral Checklist in Science(CBCS). The results of the study indicate that girls, rather than boys, showed better creative performances, demonstrating moderately higher average scores on the three creative measures used in the study. The results are in contrast to people's general conception that boys would be more creative than girls. Implications of the study in connection with identification and educational practices for gifted education program have been discussed.

  • This is a pilot study of multifaceted longitudinal research project to explore educational experiences of students with multicultural family backgrounds in Korea. Especially for this pilot study, I selected three foreign-born immigrant youths and tried to explore how these youths describe constraints of their learning experience in different culture. The data for this study were mainly collected through qualitative research methods. For a better understanding of the research participants' perceptions in this study, narrative inquiry and series of semi-structured in-depth interviews were conducted for a period of four months which corresponds to one semester of school system in Korea. As a result, this study found that there is an urgent need to establish a systemic and developmentaly appropriate language education programs that ensure educating the language to the foreign-born immigrant youths because their academic achievement, interpersonal relationships, and future depend greatly on the fluency of Korean language. It was also found that it is necessary to take appropriate educational actions in supporting alternative schools where the foreign-born immigrant youths can fully and seriously considered as a whole person. Although this study has some limitations in examining every single aspect of the current state of education of students with multicultural backgrounds in Korea, it provides deep insight into some of their initial educational experiences and proposes several ways to improve these educational programs for them.
