The purpose of this study was to study the 2nd grade elementary students' common thinking and differences of additive and multiplicative thinking. For meaningful discussion of the above, we have established the following research questions. 1. What are the properties of the multiplicative thinking of 2nd grade elementary students? - What are the common properties of the multiplicative thinking of 2nd grade elementary students? - What are the properties of the various multiplicative thinking levels? 2. How is multiplicative thinking presented in Korean math textbooks? The conclusions of this study were followings: First, the 2nd grade elementary students in the multiplicative thinking learnt used by translating multiplication into specific situations. And they often used different models of multiplication. Second, additive thinking developed into the multiplicative thinking. After being helped by their teachers, students who thought additively were then able to think multiplicatively. Whereas after being helped by their teachers, students who were already competent at multiplicative thinking gained a deeper understanding. Third, they learned the commutative property of multiplication after their understanding of the 'repeated addition approach' and the multiplicative approach was sufficiently reinforced. Last, students should be taught using different models based on the repeated addition approach.
On the basis of Sternberg's theory of mental self-government, this examined the difference in thinking style between gifted science students and non-gifted students, and their earth science concepts by the different types of thinking styles. The subjects were consisted of 120 students from the Busan Science Academy and 122 students from two general high schools in Busan, Korea. All participants responded to the Thinking Styles Inventory which is a self-report test consisting of 65 items, and essay questions for examining the students' earth science concepts. The results are as follows. First, the gifted science students prefer legislative, judical, anarchic, global, and liberal styles, where non-gifted students prefer executive, oligarchic, and conservative styles. Second, Type I thinking style group prove to have more complex concepts in relation to the geological and astronomical areas than those of the Type II thinking style group in both of the gifted and non-gifted students. This indicates that Type I thinking style students use a deep learning approach where Type II thinking style students use a surface learning approach.

The purposes of this study are 1) to revalidate the developed Measuring Instrument Systems Thinking and 2) to compare systems thinking skills between gifted and non-gifted high school students. For the test, 116 gifted science students and 553 non-gifted students were sampled from high schools. Exploratory factor analysis and confirmatory factor analysis were performed and Independent t-test was performed using the average of the two groups. The finding of the exploratory factor analysis indicated 5 factors in the model with 4 items per single factor. The result of confirmatory factor analysis was generally appropriate and acceptable (5 factor model: ${\chi}^2/df$ : 2.765, TLI=.907, CFI=.929, IFI=.930, RMSEA=.044). The reliability for 20 items turned out to be high because the Cronbach's alphas were at .875 and .693~.751 per each factor. In addition, the result of t-test showed that systems thinking skills among gifted science students were significantly higher than non-gifted students. This study could be expanded to measuring systems thinking with qualitative research tools and to various school levels.
This study compared levels of mathematically talented students' statistical thinking with those of non-talented students in statistical modeling and sampling distribution understanding. t tests were conducted to test for statistically significant differences between mathematically gifted students and non-gifted students. In case of statistical modeling, for both of elementary and middle school graders, the t tests show that there is a statistically significant difference between mathematically gifted students and non-gifted students. Table of frequencies of each level, however, shows that levels of mathematically gifted students' thinking were not distributed at the high levels but were overlapped with those of non-gifted students. A similar tendency is also present in sampling distribution understanding. These results are thought-provoking results in statistics instruction for mathematically talented students.
In this study, the student participation-centered class, which takes students' mathematical thinking as an important issues of the class, is named as student thinking-based math class. The main characteristics of student thinking-based mathematics classes were examined in terms of tasks, students engagement, and the role of teachers. According to the results of analysis of class cases practiced by five secondary mathematics teachers, student thinking-based mathematics classes were conducted in the intersection of the rich mathematics tasks, students' cognitive and social engagement, and the role of teachers' formative facilitator. The results of this study showed that the student's thinking is more important than the activity itself. And it is meaningful in that it examines the influence of the dynamic interaction of the three components of the mathematics class on the direction and outcome of the class.

The purpose of this study is to investigate the features of elementary students' intuitive thinking emerged during problem solving activities as it related to thermal phenomena, focusing on when intuitive thinking appears and how it is related to logical thinking. For this, we presented a problem related to thermal phenomena to nine 5th-grade students, and examined how students' thinking emerged in the activities. We conducted clinical interviews to investigate the thinking process of students. The results of this study are as follows. First, students made their own solutions and justified it later during the emergence process of intuitive thinking. It was also found that students connected concrete materials and abstract concepts intuitively. They solved the problem by making predictions even when information is insufficient. Second, it was shown that intuitive thinking can emerge through the intended strategies such as drawing a mental image, thinking from a different perspective, and integrating methods. These results, which are related to the students' intuitive thinking has received little attention and will be the basis for helping students in the context of discovery of their problem solving activities.

On the basis of Sternberg's the theory of mental self-government, this study investigated the differences in students' thinking styles between gifted and average students and the differences in teachers' thinking styles by school quality (gifted school/ average school), sex, professional teaching experience (as measured by duration), and subject of teaching. The subjects were consisted of 191 gifted high school freshmen, 245 average high school freshmen, and 73 teachers. The results of this study were as follows: First, there were statistical differences in many of thinking styles between gifted and average student school. Gifted students scored higher on the legislative, executive, judicial, global, and hierarchic, internal thinking styles. Second, there were no differences in teachers' thinking styles by school quality (gifted school/ average school). Third, teachers with more professional teaching experience (as measured by duration) tended to score higher on the executive, local, and conservative thinking styles. Fourth, there were no differences in teachers' thinking styles by sex and by subject of teaching. To conclude, the thinking styles of students and teachers can play an important role in teaching and learning in schools. Therefore, we need the cognition of thinking styles of students and teachers for the ideal gifted identification and instructional procedures.

The purpose of this study is to draw an educational implication by analyzing the context of narrative texts, students' narrative thinking, and their academic achievement. We investigated text types in students' geological field trip reports, the reason why students favors narrative texts, the relationship between narrative texts and their scientific knowledge recall, and the relationship between narrative thought and academic achievement. All students used expository texts, 82% of them expressed argumentative texts, and 36% of them used narrative texts. It is likely that students use more narrative texts because students were in the context of outdoor activity and so, their emotional feelings were more activated than when they are doing lab activities. The academic characteristics of earth science seemed to contribute more narrative texts in students' reports. The post-test revealed that students with narrative texts recalled better than the others. On the other hand, there were no statistically meaningful differences in academic achievement between the two groups. However, we have noted that female students whose reports contain narrative texts achieved significantly higher scores than female students whose reports are without narrative texts. From in-depth interviews, we found that students who properly used both paradigmatic and narrative mode of thought were in a more advantageous position than those who used narrative thought only. It was also found that some narratively thinking students tended to feel uncomfortable with the way of learning or evaluating questions about science. In the future, a complementary approach of narrative and paradigmatic mode of thoughts would be encouraged by understanding students' tendency of thinking.
