Learning portfolio is a collection of evidence that learning has taken place. It has gained its reputation as a useful assessment tool in the education of health professionals. The purpose of this study is to describe the pharmacy students' experiences and perceptions upon the introduction of a learning portfolio into the Introductory Pharmacy Practice Experience course. Methods: Fifty five students from one pharmacy school who used a learning portfolio to document their progress in the IPPE course participated in 16-item questionnaire exploring opinions and experiences of learning portfolio preparation, assessment, and personal and professional development and reflection. Results: Most students agree that a learning portfolio is a valuable tool in promoting self-directed and reflective learning. However most of them (46/55) also feel developing a portfolio is time-consuming, and when compared to their effort, an appropriate reward has not been given. Conclusion: To make the use of learning portfolios successful students should receive clear guidelines on their purpose, content and structure. Also the assessment criteria should be provided before the introduction of learning portfolio and their effort in developing learning portfolio should be rewarded.

Researches on prodigies and education for those have recently been progressing in many fields. Education for the gifted, which was basically on Math and Science on the start, now includes Intelligence, Invention, Cultural Sciences, Art, and so on. With the progression towards extremely developed information society, interests in and importance on the courses for the talented get more and more focused. The problem is, however, choosing the gifted and educating them is not an easy matter, since the history of Intelligence Technology is relatively short and it is hard to identify prodigies and categorize what kinds of courses they need. Also, from 2010 "Science Education Institute for the Gifted" freshmen draft, paper-based admission test has been discarded and teacher-recommendation through long-term observation introduced. Therefore needs have been increasing for quality selection methods including observation records, recommendation letters, and portfolios. Reformation on teaching and creative selection methods has been accentuated because of lack of academic base for selecting candidates for education for the gifted. Because of all those mentioned above, reliances for the selection processes during the last three years and the one in 2010, observation records, recommendations and portfolios included, have been analyzed and evaluated. Several factors which can be used instead of paper-based tests were coordinated. Based on it, it was highly possible and has been successful to draft all the applicants in cognitive, sentimental, and creative fields.

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to investigate the learning experience, self-directed learning ability and self-efficacy of Japanese nursing students undergoing portfolio-based clinical practicums. Methods: The self-directed learning ability and self-efficacy of nursing students were examined using two scales. And using a text-mining approach, we constructed correspondence analysis followed by cluster analysis of open-ended responses forms. Results: The mean score of the self-directed learning ability was $60.89{\pm}5.28$ and the generalized self-efficacy was $68.37{\pm}11.56$. Moreover, the scores in the self-directed learning ability were positively correlated with scores in the generalized self-efficacy. In correspondence analysis, the distribution of extracted words showed that record was located on the negative side of the third quadrant, to the first principal component and that patient was located on the positive side of the first quadrant, contributing greatly to the second principal component. Conclusion: The results of this study contribute to approaching to "confidence, pride, stability," "growth and intention to development'' offers a key in developing self-directed learning ability. Students record what they see and learn the importance of visualizing it in learning portfolios. "Expression in detail of the learned contents" and "concerning to which objective evaluation is suggested" are important to the students.

Research Projects allow students to experience of scientific research by conducting experiments on specific scientific subjects and writing reports. The process of research begins as students find and propose research questions and its importance has been consistently emphasized. In this study, we developed various strategies to support students to draw research questions and applied to each phase. We analyzed how students' research questions were developed at different phases. The program consists of five phases, such as (1) Exploration, (2) Literature Review and Data Collection, (3) Modification and Extension, (4) Sharing and Evaluation, (5) Final Selection and Research Plan. The program was applied to high school Research Project for 12 hours. A total of 13 students were divided into four groups of 3-4 students and conducted researches. The results of each student's research process and final research plans were then collected and analyzed. The overall quality of research questions produced by the students showed improvement in each phase. Each strategy improved in various aspects of the research questions at each level. Students were able to find their own area of interest in the 'Exploration' phase and then they began to suggest verifiable plans in the 'Literature and Data Collection' phase. They were able to find a variety of variables under the 'Modification and Extension' phase, whereas the precision of research questions improved in the 'Sharing and Evaluation' and the 'Final Selection and Research Plan' phase.
In this study, we developed a sustainability education program employing a project-based learning strategy for prospective teachers and investigated its effectiveness. A total of 23 senior students from a university of education participated in the study. The investigation involved a pretest on their pro-environmental behavior and attitudes, followed by a five-week implementation of the program, during which students individually engaged in energy-saving projects. Following the program, a post-test, which used the same questionnaire as the pretest, was administered. In addition, we conducted individual interviews with nine students who actively engaged in the projects. We analyzed the interview contents, portfolios, and reports; identified sub-concepts related to the program's effectiveness and its causes; and then organized them into subcategories. Then, we extracted recurring relationships among the subcategories to formulate a tentative explanatory model. The results indicate that the program positively impacted students' pro-environmental behavior and values/attitudes. Notably, the students' "sense of achievement gained through success" emerged as a significant factor influencing their pro-environmental behavior. Furthermore, some causes were found to indirectly affect pro-environmental behavior through pro-environmental values and attitudes.
The purpose of this study was to develop the instructional process plan and performance assessment instrument to do problem-solving activity for 'Energy and Transportation Technology' unit at the subject 'Technology-Home Economics' in middle school. The purposes of this study was to analyze qualitatively changes in students' experience and perceptions in relation to studying science using portfolios and any resultant effects on the portfolio itself. Five fourth-grade elementary students from one small city participated in this study. Data was collected through interviews as well as through student portfolios containing the science content matter of two units over two weeks. Observational diaries recorded by a teacher were also used to test the reliability of data collection. All interviews with students were transcribed to develop a suitable network to categorize students' responses. Students' portfolios were analyzed in order to reveal their essential characteristics in combination with their teacher's observational diaries. The results were as follows. First, student perceptions of their portfolios were categorized into three different levels; superficial, extended, and moderate perceptions. The changes in perception could also be divided into three levels; consistent-superficial, unstable, and a progressive-extended pattern. Second, the experience of students with their portfolio were investigated in terms of the following; successfully completing the elements of the portfolio, development of evidence, interaction with peers, teachers, and parents, and the standards of evaluation used for the portfolios. Third, the perceptions and experience of working on the portfolio by students had a number of direct effects on the way in which students actually created and developed their portfolios. Finally, students with positive attitudes towards their portfolios actively participated in the portfolio experience and finally understood what it meant completely. However, students with negative attitudes regarding portfolio based work, did not leave the experience with any heightened awareness of the utility or indeed, purpose of portfolio based work.
