  • In this paper, we proposes to develop an online academic vocabulary dictionary as a way of educating academic vocabulary for content-oriented Korean language education. Various academic languages exist in the content-based Korean language teaching materials they encounter when studying at university. You cannot understand or produce academic text without knowing the academic vocabulary. Therefore, one of the tasks of Korean language education has become to improve educational efficiency by preparing a method for academic vocabulary education that is most suitable for them in consideration of their own. Prior to the development of the online academic vocabulary dictionary, the institute conducted a basic study on how the content should be contained in the online dictionary. Online academic vocabulary dictionaries allow students to naturally link their limited education into and out of the classroom, thereby overcoming the limitations of vocabulary education at the educational scene and maximizing their educational effectiveness.

  • This study aimed to investigate the impact of scores on the Test of Proficiency in Korean (TOPIK) among foreign exchange students on academic adaptation. Recruited students, approved by the Institutional Review Board (IRB), totaled seven, and their interview contents were analyzed using a comprehensive analysis procedure based on pragmatic eclecticism (Lee, Kim, 2014), utilizing six stages. As a result, factors influencing academic adaptation of Korean language learners for academic purposes were categorized into three dimensions: academic, daily life, and psychological-emotional aspects. On the academic front, interviewees pointed out difficulties in adapting to specialized terminology and studying in their majors, as well as experiencing significant challenges with Chinese characters and Sino-Korean words. Next, from a daily life perspective, even participants holding advanced TOPIK scores faced difficulties in adapting to university life, emphasizing the necessity of practical expressions and extensive vocabulary for proper adjustment to Korean life. Lastly, within the psychological-emotional dimension, despite being advanced TOPIK holders, they were found to experience considerable stress in conversations or presentations with Koreans. Their lack of knowledge in social-cultural and everyday life culture also led to linguistic errors and contributed to psychological-emotional difficulties, despite proficiency in Korean. Based on these narratives, the conclusion was reached that in order to promote the academic adaptation of Korean language learners, it is essential to provide opportunities for Korean language learning. With this goal in mind, efforts should be directed towards enhancing learners' academic proficiency in their majors, improving Korean language fluency, and fostering interpersonal relationships within the academic community. Furthermore, the researchers suggested as a solution to implement various extracurricular activities tailored for foreign learners.

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze teachers' questions in the actual general Korean classroom for academic purposes and identify types of questions. The results of the question analysis by type identified 713 teacher's questions in total: echoic questions made up 41% while epistemic questions were 19.3% and expended question turned out to make up 39.7%. 'Comprehension check questions' were 29%, which was a major part in the echoic question. 'Referential questions' were a major part in the epistemic question. Also, the research discovered that 'knowledge integration' questions held the largest majority in expended questions. Since the teacher-led lecture was often conducted in the problem-presentation stage, the percentage of Echoic question was high; and moreover, the problem-solving stage promoted to come up with more improved solutions of the problem. In the outcome and presentation stage, it was discovered that the questions aimed to check understanding of content in the subject and expand thoughts. Therefore, it is necessary to develop strategies for teacher's questions by phase and further conduct research on the interaction between learners and teacher's questions in the future.

  • The purpose of this paper is to compare learners' academic texts with academic texts of native speakers and to examine the usage patterns of learners' objectification strategies in detail. In order to achieve objectivity as a discourse mechanism applied to describe the results of academic inquiry in a scientific way with universality and validity, we analyzed concepts and signs such as related intentionality, accuracy, and mitigation of the linguistic markers of objectification strategies. As a result of the comparison, it was analyzed that there are intersectional overlaps with the signs that reveal objectivity, signs indicating related mechanisms, and there is a different set that is differentiated. Objective markers can be broadly classified as emphasizing stativity of research results, separating research subjects from research results, and generalizing research contents. Sustainable expressions and noun phrases emphasize statehood, and non-inhabited expressions, passive expressions, and self-quotations are maintained in the distance between the claimant and the writer, and the pluralization through first-person pronouns and suffixes contributes to generalization. In the case of the learner, the non-inhuman expression of the quotation type appears to be very less compared to the maw speaker, which could be due to the lack of recognition of the citation method of the Korean academic text. Next, in the generalization of the research contents, the expression of 'we' was very less compared to the maw speakers.
