  • A survey was conducted from September 9 to November 2, 2013, on 277 teachers in 10 different elementary schools to find out about their awareness of school dental clinics and preventive oral health programs. The schools were selected by convenience sampling from the city of Gunsan, North Jeolla Province. Out of the teachers, 133 teachers worked in five elementary schools equipped with school dental clinics, and 144 teachers worked in the other five elementary schools that weren't equipped with school dental clinics. As for data analysis, an IBM SPSS 21.0 was utilized as well. As a result of analyzing their opinions on the top priority of oral health programs, the teachers from the schools equipped with school dental clinics placed the most importance on application of fluorides and oral health education (71.1%), and the teachers from the schools without school dental clinics gave top priority to oral health education (76.5%). The 87.0% of the former replied that there was improvement in the oral health status of the students. The 74.4% of the latter answered they had never heard about school oral health programs, but 85.8% expected the introduction of school oral health programs to be of use for the improvement of the oral health state of the students. The 57.7% of the teachers from the schools with school dental clinics didn't think there were sufficient human resources who could be responsible for preventive oral health programs. As the successful performance of oral health programs by school dental clinics exerts a huge influence on not only the oral health promotion of school organizational members but that of community members, schools that aren't yet equipped with dental clinics should be informed about the necessity of school dental clinics, and the government should put more efforts into publicity activities about school dental clinics.

Data were collected by questionnaires from 445 middle and high school students in Jeolla-Bukdo, from April 20 to May 10, 2009. Surveyed data were analyzed by descriptive statistics, ${\chi}^2-test$ and t-test using SPSS V11.5 program. In the event of those who didn't use oral hygiene supplies, the largest group didn't use the devices since they didn't know about them well. Regarding links between experience of using oral hygiene devices and concern for oral health, those who received that education showed more interest in oral health, and the students who felt the need for that education had more interest than the others who didn't. The results of study suggest how to encourage students to utilize appropriate oral hygiene supplies and to help facilitate the development of school oral health education programs and the promotion of school oral health.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of repetitive oral health education on oral health knowledge, attitudes and behaviors of elementary school students. A final analysis of 111 untested individuals was made. The oral health knowledge and oral health behavior scores according to the presence or absence of oral health education showed a higher level than the school that did not perform oral health education for 3 years (p <0.01). Repeated and continuous oral health education of elementary school students has a great influence on oral health knowledge and behavioral change, so if the dental hygienists can stay and manage oral health care, the effect will be increased.

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of systemic oral health education on the improvement of knowledge levels and patient hygiene performance(PHP) for elementary school students. The randomly selected 1st and 5th grade students in a public elementary school of Taegu city were divided by education group(118 students) and non-education group(122 students). The oral health education lesson was systematically held on the education group once a month for 4 months. The questionnaire queried all the subjects about their knowledge and attitudes before and after oral health education, and PHP was also tested at the same time. Corresponding p-values were significantly considered at values less than 0.05. The obtained results were as follows: Due to the oral health education lesson, the education group of both 1st and 5th grade students came to have a higher knowledge level than the non-education group. There was high improvement of items such as toothbrushing time, toothbrushing method, cause of dental caries, treatment after tooth damage, and tongue-brushing. Therefore, these items should be educated to all the elementary school students. By increaseing the knowledge level of oral health after education, the PHP index in the education group was significantly decreased in comparison to the non-education group and hence the capability of oral health management improved. From the above results, a systematically and periodically oral health education system for elementary school students can improve the knowledge level and capability of oral health management. Further study will be required to develop an easy and acceptable systemic oral health education program for elementary schools.
