Current and Long Wave Influenced Plume Rise and Initial Dilution Determination for Ocean Outfall (해양 배출구에서 해류와 장파에 의한 플룸 상승과 초기 희석도 결정)

  • In the United States, a number of ocean outfalls discharge primary treated effluent into deep sea water and contribute for more efficient wastewater treatment. The long multiport diffuser connected by long pipe from a treatment plant discharge wastewater into deep water due to the steep slope of the sea bed. However, Plume discharged from the diffuser can have significant impacts on coastal communities and possibly immediate consequence on public health. Therefore, there have been growing interests about the dynamics of plume in the vicinity of the ocean outfalls. It is expected that the ocean outfall should be considered for more efficient and reliable wastewater treatments as soon as possible around coastal area in South Korea. A number of studies of plume ynamics have used various models to predict plume behavior. However, in many cases, the calculated values of plume behavior are in significantly poor agreement with realistic values. Therefore, in this study, it is recommended that improvements should be made in the application of the plume model to more simulate the actual discharge characteristics and ocean conditions. It should be noted that input parameters in plume models reflect realistic ocean conditions like waves as well as currents. In this study, as one of the new parameters, current and long wave-influenced plume rise and initial dilution have been taken into account by using simple linear wave theory under some specific assumptions for more reliable plume behavior description. Among the improved plume models approved by EPA (Environmental Protection Agency), the RSB(Roberts-Snyder-Baurngartner) and UM(Updated Merge) models were chosen for the calculation of plume behavior, and the variation calculated by both models on the basis of long period wave was compared in terms of plume rise and initial dilution.

  • Removal rate of nitrogen compound containing swine wastewater was 97 percent in case of high loading rate treatment of swine wastewater at studies for process development using soil microorganism. Minimum hydraulic retention time(HRT) for nitrification process was 11 days and solid retention time was 25 days. Nitrification was between 5 and 11 days but this time $NO_2-N$ was remained. Reactor condition was injured to nitrosomonas according to pH, $NO_2\;^--N$, and $NH_3\;^--N$ concentration but this condition was recover to pH controlling.

Sludge Solubilization by Pre-treatment and its Effect on Methane Production and Sludge Reduction in Anaerobic Digestion (전처리 방법에 따른 슬러지 가용화가 혐기소화에서 메탄 생산과 슬러지 감량에 미치는 영향)

  • Anaerobic digestion has been widely used for the treatment of sludge, which is generated from the municipal and industrial wastewater treatment, for its volume reduction and methane production. Many researches on sludge pre-treatment have been carried out in order to enhance the performance of anaerobic digestion by increasing the hydrolysis of sludge which is the rate limiting step of anaerobic digestion. In this study, the effect of pre-treatment on sludge hydrolysis(solubilization), methane production and sludge reduction by anaerobic digestion after thermal, ultrasonic, and thermal-alkali sludge treatment were compared. Thermal-alkali treatment showed 67 and 70% solubilization with municipal and industrial wastewater sludge, respectively, while ultrasonic treatment and thermal treatment gave similar solubilization efficiency of 40% or more. Methane content of the anaerobic digestion gas reached 45~70% and pretreated sludge gave higher methane content than the control sludge. Methane production of thermal, ultrasonic, and thermal-alkali pre-treatment gave 2.6, 2.7, 3.5 times of municipal control sludge and 3.5, 4.1, 4.2 times of industrial control sludge, respectively. Sludge reduction of pre-treated sludge after anaerobic digestion gave 5~19% point higher than that of control sludge, and thermal-alkali treatment showed higher reduction efficiency than thermal and ultrasonic treatment. The results proved that pre-treatment contributed significantly not only for the methane production but also for the cost reduction of sludge treatment and disposal, and thermal-alkali treatment gave the best performance for the sludge treatment.

Analysis and Distribution of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons and Chlorophenols in Sewage and Industrial Wastewater Sludge in Korea (국내 하.폐수슬러지 중 다환방향족탄화수소 및 염화페놀류의 분포 특성)

  • In order to evaluate the levels and distribution patterns, the concentrations of PAHs and chlorophenols were investigated in sludge samples discharged from 6 WWTPs located along Nak-dong river and 7 STPs in Busan, Korea. Levels of 16 PAHs and 19 chlorophenols in sludge samples ranged from 1.28 to 44.9 mg/kg dry wt. and from 213 to 3,850 $\mu$g/kg dry wt., respectively. Levels of PAHs in sludge samples except I5 and S4 were detected lower than those of previous studies. The distribution patterns of PAHs and chlorophenols varied with industrial wastewater sludge samples because industrial wastewater sludge had different industrial input sources. However, the distribution patterns of PAHs and chlorophenols in sewage sludge were pretty similar. Phenanthrene, fluoranthene and pyrene were dominant and the fractions of these 3 PAHs relative to 16 PAHs in sewage sludge ranged from 30.8 to 50.7%. 2-chlorophenol is dominated in most sewage sludge samples and the fraction ranged from 36.0 to 66.8%.

Determination of Biological kinetic Parameters for Pharmaceutical Wastewater (제약 폐수의 생물학적 동력학 계수 측정)

  • The aim of this research is to estimate the values of biological kinetic parameters of pharmaceutical wastewater for understanding biochemical properties. Maximum specific growth rate (${\mu}m$), yield coefficient (Y), and half-velocity coefficient (KS) were determined using oxygen uptake rate (OUR), and the results were 10.49/day (0.437/hr), 0.655, and 38.89 mg/L, respectively. Measured ${\mu}max$ by nonlinear regression of Monod equation was 10.63/day (or 0.443/hr), and this value was similar with above result. These parameters may be used to increase efficiency of pharmaceutical wastewater treatment and to determine amount of oxygen needed to removal BOD and dissolved oxygen in activated sludge process.

Photo-Fenton Oxidation Treatment of Pilot Scale for the Decomposition of 1,4-dioxane Generated in a Polyester Manufacturing Process (폴리에스테르 중합 공정에서 발생되는 1,4-dioxane의 분해를 위한 파일럿 규모의 광펜톤산화처리)

  • In this research, a polyester manufacturing company (i.e. K Co.) in Gumi, South Korea was investigated regarding the release of high concentrations of 1,4-dioxane(about 600 mg/L) and whether treatment prior to release should occur to meet with the level of the regulation standard (e.g., 5 mg/L in 2011). The pilot-scale (reactor volume, 10 $m^3$) treatment system using Photo-Fenton Oxidation was able to remove approximately 90% of 1,4-dioxane under the conditions that concentrations of 2,800 ppm $H_2O_2$ and 1,400 ppm $FeSO_4$ were maintained along with 10 UV-C lamps (240 ${\mu}W/cm^2$) illuminated during aeration. However, the effluent concentration of 1,4-dioxane was still high at about 60 mg/L. Thus, further investigation is needed to see whether the bench scale (reactor volume, 8.9 L) of activated sludge could facilitate the decomposition of 1,4-dioxane. As a result, 1,4-dioxane in the effluent has been decreased as low as about 2~3 mg/L. Consequently, Photo-Fenton Oxidation coupled with activated sludge process can make it possible to efficiently decompose 1,4-dioxane to keep up with that of the regulation standard.

Metabolic Responses of Activated Sludge to Pentachlorophenol in SBR Systems

  • The primary objective of this study was to examine the toxic effects of PCP on activated sludge and to analyze its metabolic responses while treating wastewater containing pentachlorophenol (PCP) in a sequencing batch reactor (SBR) system operating under different control strategies. This study was conducted in two phases 1 and 2 (8-hr and 12-hr cycles). Each phase was operated with two control strategies I and II. Strategy I (reactor 1) involved rapid addition (5 minutes to complete) of substrate to the reactor with continuous mixing but no aeration for 2 hours. Strategy ll (reactor 2) involved adding the feed continuously during the first 2 hours of the cycle when the system was mixed but not aerated. During both phases each reactor was operated at a sludge age of 15 days. The synthetic wastewater was used as a feed. The COD of the feed solution was about 380 mg/l. After the reference response for both reactors was established, the steady state response of each system was established for PCP feed concentrations of 0.1 mg/l, 1.0 mg/l, and 5.0 mg/l in SBR systems operating on both 8-hr and 12-hr cycles. Soluble COD removal was not inhibited at any feed PCP concentrations used. At 5.0 mg/l fined PCP concentration and in SBR systems operating on phase 2, the concentrations of MLVSS were decreased; selective pressure on the mixed biomass might be increased, narrowing the range of possible ecological responses; the settleability of activated sludge was poor; the SOURS were increased, showing that the systems were shocked. Nitrification was made to some extent at all concentrations of feed PCP in SBR systems operating on phase 2 whereas in SBR systems operating on phase 1 little nitrification was observed. Then, nitrification will be delayed as much as soluble COD removal is retarded due to PCP inhibition effects. Enhanced biological phosphorus removal occurring in the system operating with control strategy I during phase 1 of this work and in the presence of low concentrations of PCP was unreliable and might cease at anytime, whereas enhanced biological phosphorus removal occurring in the system operating with either control strategy I or II during phase 2 of this work and in the Presence of feed PCP concentrations up to 1.0 mg/l was reliable. When, however, such processes were exposed to 5.0 mg/l PCP dose, enhanced phosphorus removal ceased and never returned.

The studies of swine wastewater treatment aim to development of process using soil microorganism. Microorganism was devoted to improve the treatment efficiency of the process. Biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) concentration of treated swine wastewater was under 150 mg/L in anaerobic reactor. Also, value of km and Y were $0.73\;hr^{-1}$ and 0.433 g/VSS/g BODrm/d at microorganism of post aeration tank in anaerobic reactor.

Effect of Process By-products on Food Wastes Treatment Costs (공정부산물이 음식물쓰레기 처리비용에 미치는 영향 분석)

  • The aim of this study was to analyze food waste treatment cost and to estimate effect of by-product, such as wastewater and foreign materials, on amount cost. In cost analysis, man power and facility capacity are fixed, whereas operation cost, by-product treatment and et, al. are varied by treatment methods. The rate of by-product treatment cost in amount cost are between 5% and 39%. The methods which consume large electric power or generate much wastewater showed higher rate of by-product treatment cost in range of 14 to 39%. On the other hand, the methods which have simple process showed lower rate in range of 5 to 11%. Thus, this study recommend that by-products should be treated in sewage treatment facilities or landfill sites to prevent illegal disposal of by-products or to reduce burden of by-product from private sectors.
