  • The structural framework design uses high-strength bolts and welding in column splices. However, for the column under high compression, the number of the required high-strength bolts can be excessive and the increase of welding results in difficulty of quality inspection, the transformation of the structural steels, and the increase of erection time. According to the AISC criteria, when columns have bearing plates, or they are finished to bear at splices, there shall be sufficient connections to hold all parts securely in place. The Korean standard sets the maximum 25% of the load as criteria. Using direct contact makes it possible to transfer all compressive force through it. The objective of this study is to examine the generally applied stress path mechanism of welded or bolted columns and to verify the bending moment and compression transfer mechanism of the column splice according to metal touch precision. For this study,22 specimens of various geometric shapes were constructed according to the change in the variables for each column splice type, which includes the splice method, gap width, gap axis, presence or absence of splice material, and connector type. The results show that the application of each splice can be improved through the examination of the stress path mechanism upon metal contact. Moreover, the revision of the relative local code on direct contact needs to be reviewed properly for the economics and efficiency of the splices.

  • Recently, there has been rapid development in the field of flexible electronic devices, such as organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs), organic solar cells and flexible sensors. Encapsulation process is added to protect the flexible electronic devices from exposure to oxygen and moisture in the air. Using numerical simulation, we investigated the effects of the encapsulation layer on mechanical stability of the silicon chip, especially the fracture performance of center crack in multi-layer package for various loading condition. The multi-layer package is categorized in two type - a wide chip model in which the chip has a large width and encapsulation layer covers only the chip, and a narrow chip model in which the chip covers both the substrate and the chip with smaller width than the substrate. In the wide chip model where the external load acts directly on the chip, the encapsulation layer with high stiffness enhanced the crack resistance of the film chip as the thickness of the encapsulation layer increased regardless of loading conditions. In contrast, the encapsulation layer with high stiffness reduced the crack resistance of the film chip in the narrow chip model for the case of external tensile strain loading. This is because the external load is transferred to the chip through the encapsulation layer and the small load acts on the chip for the weak encapsulation layer in the narrow chip model. When the bending moment acts on the narrow model, thin encapsulation layer and thick encapsulation layer show the opposite results since the neutral axis is moving toward the chip with a crack and load acting on chip decreases consequently as the thickness of encapsulation layer increases. The present study is expected to provide practical design guidance to enhance the durability and fracture performance of the silicon chip in the multilayer package with encapsulation layer.

  • A composite piston with a crown made of steel and a skirt made of NCI is used in a marine diesel engine, which has a maximum firing pressure of over 180 bar and a high thermal load. In the fatigue design of the composite piston, the fatigue is influenced by factors such as the load type, surface roughness, and temperature; further, the distribution ratio of the firing force from the crown to the skirt is important for optimizing the design of the crown and skirt. In this study, the stress gradient method was used to consider the effect of the load type. The temperature field on the piston was predicted by cocktail-shaking cooling analysis, and influence of high temperature on fatigue strength was investigated. The load transfer ratio and contact pressure were optimized by design of the surface shape and accurate tolerance analysis. Finally, the cooling performance and durability design of the composite piston were verified by performing a long-term prototype test.

  • Development of a facade system that can reduce load factor and costs in high-rise building construction is required. The proposed cable wall system is used as a structural support by the glass-cable and can increase openness on lower elevations and the lobby area. Its use in high-rise buildings can reduce construction costs. Without transferring directly a strong initial tension of the cable to the building frame is connected to the steel member and the reinforced concrete structures, by absorbing the initial tension of the cable, it is possible to control the occurrence of a strong concentrated loads to the structure. Comparison of load-displacement test results from the numerical analysis with the test results showed reasonable agreement, Therefore, the proposed numerical results confirm good prediction of cable behavior for the facade system.

  • The pile-cap connection part which transfers foundation loads through pile body is critical element regarding flexural and shear force because the change of area, stress, and stiffness occurs in the this region suddenly. The purpose of this study is to investigate the structural behavior of pile-cap connection dependent on fabrication methods using conventional PHC pile and composite PHC pile. A series of test under cyclic lateral load was performed and the connection behavior was discussed. From the test results, it was found that the initial rotational stiffness of pile-cap connection was affected by the length of pile-head inserted in footing and the location of longitudinal reinforcing bars. The types of pile and location of longitudinal reinforcing bars governed the behavior of pile-cap connection regarding load-carrying capacity, ductility, and energy dissipation.

  • A flight training simulator of a fully spherical configuration is being developed to precisely and quickly control six degrees of freedom (Dof) motions especially with unlimited rotations. The full-scale simulator should be designed with a lightweight material to reduce inertial effects for fast and stable feedback controls while no structural failure is ensured during operations. In this study, a sandwich composite consisting of glass fiber reinforced plastics and a foam core is used to obtain high specific strengths and specific stiffnesses. T-type stainless steel frames are inserted to minimize the deformation of the sphere curvature. Finite element analysis is carried out to evaluate structural safety of the simulator composed of the sandwich sphere and steel frames. The analysis considers the weights of the equipment and trainee and it is assumed to be 200 kg. Gravity acceleration is also considered. The stresses and displacement acting on the simulator are calculated and the safety is assessed under two different situations.

  • Floating offshore structures should be designed by considering the most extreme environmental loadings which may be encountered in their design life. The most severe loading on a wave-offshore wind hybrid power generation system is wave loads. The principal parameters of wave loads are wave length, wave height and wave direction. The wave loads have different effects on the structural behavior characteristic depending on the combination of wave parameters. Therefore, the process of investigation for critical loads based on the individual wave loading parameter is need. Namely, the equivalent design wave should be derived by finding the wave condition which generates the maximum stress in entire wave conditions. Through a series of analysis, an equivalent regular wave height can be obtained which generates the same amount of the hydrodynamic loads as calculated in the response analysis. The aim of this study is the determination of equivalent design wave regarding to characteristic global hydrodynamic responses for wave-offshore wind hybrid power generation system. It will be utilized in the global structural response analysis subjected to selected design waves and this study also includes an application of global structural analysis.

  • In this paper, uncertainties in dynamic soil structure interaction (SSI) of nuclear poi.or plants subjected to seismic loading are studied considering the random characteristics of soils surround- ing the structure. Firstly sensitivity analysis is performed to study the effect of uncertain dynamic soil properties on the response of the structure. Secondly, to take into account the non-neterministic characteristics in analysis caused by random characteristics of the soil properties, Perturbation method and Rosenblueth's Two point estimates were used for this studu. The procedure is based on the comptex response method which is constituted by a combined usage of conventional finite elements for the near field and infinite elements for the far field. Results of the sensitivity analysis show that dynamic soil properties greatly affect the response of the sol.uc- lure. Results of the probabilistic analysis show that the Two-point estimate method produces good agreements with the Perturbation method.

  • In this study, mechanical role of edge beams in the gabled hyperbolic paraboloid shells was investigated through the comparisons of Finite element(FE) analysis results between the shells structures with and without edge beams. In addition, the effects of roof slope was studied. FE analysis showed that roof loads was directly transferred to the supports at corners by the arch action in the diagonal direction of the shells, thus, less member forces in the edge and ridge beams but higher stresses near supports were estimated than those from the membrane theory. When the edge beams were removed, stress concentration in the shells near the supports and the deflections along the shell edge were increased. Such phenomenon were intensified as the roof slope decrease. Thus, in gable hyperbolic paraboloid shell, the thickness of the shell near supports needs to be increased and careful investigation should be made in the cases when the roof height is low and/or the edge beams are removed.

  • Slewing bearing is applied to the transmission of rotational power of the body and turret in a special vehicle for anti-aircraft weapons that overcomes the enemy flight system approaching at low altitudes with rapid response fire. When the turret load and impact load generated when shooting are combined in performing the combat mission of a special vehicle, structural stability must be secured to achieve a successful function. Among the components of the slewing bearing, the stability of the components against the complex loads acting by the turret drive and shooting was evaluated by considering the shape and material characteristics of the ring-gear, roller, and wire-race. As a research method for stability evaluation, based on engineering theory, the strength characteristics of the components were examined by numerical calculations. Finite element analysis was performed on components using the ANSYS analysis program. The results of theoretical analysis and the results of finite element analysis were very similar. A structural stability evaluation for the slewing bearing, which was performed mainly on the analysis, confirmed that the design strength of the slewing bearing determined in the preliminary design in the early stage of localization development was sufficient.
