  • Some analytical methods to analyze low-velocity impact force history of composite laminated structures used in aerospace vehicles are reviewed. A classical method used at initial research of low-velocity impact problem in 1980s was reviewed on its physical meaning, and the approximate method assuming the shape of impact force history as a sinusoidal wave was reviewed. A parametric study on contact constant and exponent in contact law was performed in order to analyze an effect on impact force history, and finally its was understood that impact force history could be analyzed accurately even though the linearized contact law was used. Also, in this paper it was shown that impact problem could be analyzed simply and easily using a commercial finite element code.

  • The radiated sound pressure induced by tapping test is obtained by solving the Rayleigh integral equation. For structurally radiated sound, the sound field is directly coupled to the structural motion. Therefore the impact response should be analyzed. In this paper, the delamination model is used to analyze the impact response of delaminated composite laminates. And efficient spring-mass model has been proposed to model hammer shaped impactor. Predicted sound pressure histories are compared with test data. The influence of damage on the sound pressure and impacted force history of laminates were investigated. The results show that both radiated sound pressure and impact force history are strongly influenced by delamination on laminates. As a result, it is shown that the presented sound based tapping method was found to be reliable for detecting the damage in composite laminate.

  • CWR (continuous welded rail) tracks on high-speed railway bridges have much more complicated axial force distributions caused by track-bridge interaction than those behaviors on embankments, and additional problems caused by track-structure interaction with the axial force of the CWR. In order to analyze and limit other physical phenomena caused by track-bridge interaction, a design guideline (KR C-08080, longitudinal track-bridge interaction analysis) is used when designing CWR track on bridges. Domestic analysis and design methods for track-bridge interaction follow the UIC 774-3R, and they suggest conservative methods and deterministic properties. Recently, many studies analyzing the methods of track-bridge interaction considering the loading history are being carried out; however, there has been insufficient studies of the variation of the resistance properties with a consideration of the actual loading history. In this study, the performances of rail fastening systems used for concrete track on bridges were tested and analyzed while considering the loading history. For this purpose, longitudinal and vertical loading combinations, applied in order to simulate the practical conditions and resistance characteristics (stiffness and elastic limit displacement), are analyzed through the experimental results. Also, a comparison study was conducted with the properties in the KR Code.

  • In this paper, influence of shear on the seismic performance and failure mode of reinforced concrete piers subjected to earthquake loading is investigated. Comparative study has been carried out for reinforced concrete column tests to verify the shear-axial interaction model presented in this paper. Comparison shows that predicted shear hysteretic response agrees well with the test results. Also conducted is a nonlinear time-history analysis of a reinforced concrete bridge damaged by the Kobe earthquake using the current development. Displacement response for piers reveals that maximum displacement is considerably increased due to the effect of shear coupled with axial force variation, which leads to overall stiffness degradation and period elongation. It is therefore concluded that the response considering both shear and axial force gives better explanation regarding the seismic damage evaluation of reinforced concrete bridge piers.

  • In this study, we developed a methodology to determine the reference parameter for an aircraft impact induced risk assessment of nuclear power plant (NPP) using finite element impact analysis of containment building. The target structure used to develop the method of reference parameter selection is one of the typical Korean PWR type containment buildings. We composed a three-dimensional finite element model of the containment building. The concrete damaged plasticity model was used for the concrete material model. The steels in the tendon, rebar, and liner were modeled using the piecewise-linear stress-strain curves. To evaluate the correlations between structural response and each candidate parameter, we developed Riera's aircraft impact force-time history function with respect to the variation of the loading parameters, i.e., impact velocity and mass of the remaining fuel. For each force-time history, the type of aircraft is assumed to be a Boeing 767 model. The variation ranges of the impact velocity and remaining fuel percentage are 50 to 200m/s, and 30 to 90%, respectively. Four parameters, i.e., kinetic energy, total impulse, maximum impulse, and maximum force are proposed for candidates of the reference parameter. The wellness of the correlation between the reference parameter and structural responses was formulated using the coefficient of determination ($R^2$). From the results, we found that the maximum force showed the highest $R^2$ value in most responses in the materials. The simplicity and intuitiveness of the maximum force parameter are also remarkable compared to the other candidate parameters. Therefore, it can be concluded that the maximum force is the most proper candidate for the reference parameter to assess the aircraft impact induced risk of NPPs.

  • In case of the continuous welded rail(CWR) track is supported by the railway bridge, the additional axial force is occurred in the CWR due to the track-bridge interaction. In the various design codes such as Korean code, European code, UIC code, etc, three important loads(temperature variation in the bridge-deck, braking/acceleration and the bending of the bridge-deck resulted from the passing train) are treated as the independent loading case. In other words, the additional axial force can be obtained by summing up the three different values calculated by the three independent analysis. However, this analysing method may have an error because the behavior of the longitudinal resistance between the rail and the bridge-deck is under the highly nonlinear. Therefore, in order to exactly analyse the track-bridge interaction, nonlinear loading history and the change of the longitudinal resistance owing to the loading history must be considered in the analysis process. In this study, the loading history effect on the track-bridge interaction is investigated considering the resonable combination of three loads and the longitudinal resistance change.

  • The accurate peak response estimation of a seismically excited structure with frictional damping system(FDS) is very difficult since the structure with FDS shows nonlinear behavior dependent on the structural period, loading characteristics, and relative magnitude between the frictional force and the excitation load. Previous studies have estimated that by replacing a nonlinear system with an equivalent linear one or by employing the response spectrum obtained based on nonlinear time history and statistical analysis. In the case that an earthquake load is defined with probabilistic characteristics, the corresponding response of the structure with FDS has probabilistic distribution. In this study, nonlinear time history analyses were performed for the structure with FDS subjected to artificial earthquake loads generated using Kanai-Tajimi filter. An equation for the probability density function (PDF) of the displacement response is proposed by adapting the PDF of the normal distribution. Finally, coefficients of the proposed PDF are obtained by regression analysis of the statistical distribution of the time history responses. Finally the correlation between PDFs and statistical response distribution is presented.

  • In this paper, equivalent models for active control devices are proposed so that building structures with such devices are analyzed using commercial structural analysis programs for the assessment of the structural members under active vibration control. Equivalent link models represent active control device with a virtual linear spring and dashpot, and equivalent force models are control force history acting at the installation point in structural models. Active controllers are designed based on the reduced-order models for a vertical cantilever model and a high-rise building model and corresponding equivalent models are determined from control gain matrices. Based on acceleration, displacement and member force responses, the effectiveness of the equivalent models is verified. As a result, proposed equivalent models, of which equivalent link model showed better performance, appear to enable detailed investigation of structural behavior to the extent of member force level.

  • Numerical analysis of shear walls governed by flexural behavior is conducted for the seismic control performance of proposed friction dampers installed at the center of coupling beams. Control effectiveness of shear walls connected by beams with the proposed dampers are compared for single shear wall with same flexural rigidity. Average responses of the shear walls with the dampers are found with seven scaled-downed earthquakes based on KEC 2005 design spectrum. Slip load is the most important design parameter. It is designed to be 5, 10, 20, 30, 60, 90% of total vertical shear force at damper location to prevent damper slip in specific stories. Nonlinear time-history analysis is conducted by using SeismoStruct analysis program. Seismic control performance of the dampers is evaluated for base shear, energy dissipation, curvature and top-floor displacement. Results show that the dampers are the most effective in reducing the responses when their total slip load is 30% of total vertical shear force.

  • Nonlinear pushover analysis is used to evaluate the earthquake response of building structures. To accurately predict the inelastic response of a structure, the prescribed story load profile should be able to describe the earthquake force profile which actually occurs during the time-history response of the structure. In the present study, a new modal combination method was developed to predict the earthquake load profiles of building structures. In the proposed method, multiple story load profiles are predicted by combining the modal spectrum responses multiplied by the modal combination factors. Parametric studies were performed far moment-resisting frames and walls. Based on the results. the modal combination factors were determined according to the hierarchy of each mode affecting the dynamic responses of structures. The proposed modal combination method was applied to prototype buildings with and without vertical irregularity. The results showed that the proposed method predicts the actual story load profiles which occur during the time-history responses of the structures.
