  • Load managing method on road became necessary since overloaded vehicles occur damage on road facilities and existing systems for preventing this damage still show many problems. Accordingly, efficient managing system for preventing overloaded vehicles could be organized by using the road itself as a scale by applying genetic algorithm to analyze the load and the drive information of vehicles. First of all, accurate analysis of load using the behavior of road itself is needed for solving illegal axle manipulation problems of overloaded vehicles and for installing intelligent embedded load analyzing system. Accordingly in this study, to use the behavior of road, the transformation was measured by installing underground box type indoor model and indoor experiment was held using genetic algorithm and 10% error were checked.

  • For shallow circular arches with large dynamic loading, use of linear analysis is no longer considered as practical and accurate. In this study, a method is presented for the dynamic analysis of the shallow circular arches in which geometric nonlinearity is dominant. A program is developed for analysis of the nonlinear dynamic behavior and for evaluation of the critical buckling loads of the shallow circular arches. Geometric nonlinearity is modeled using Lagrangian description of the motion and finite element analysis procedure is used to solve the dynamic equations of motion in which Newmark method is adopted as a time marching scheme. A shallow circular arch subject to radial step load is analyzed and the results are compared with those from other researches to verify the developed program. The critical buckling loads of shallow arches are evaluated using the non-dimensional parameter. Also, the results are compared with those from linear analysis.

  • This paper summarizes a dynamic analysis of the shallow circular arches under dynamic loading, considering the geometric nonlinearity. The major emphasis is placed on the development of computer program, which is utilized for the analysis of the nonlinear dynamic behavior and for the evaluation of the critical buckling loads of the shallow circular arches. Geometric nonlinearity is modeled using Lagrangian description of the motion and a finite element analysis procedure is used to solve the dynamic equation of motion. A circular arch subject to normal step load is analyzed and the results are compared with those from other researches to verify the developed program. The critical buckling loads of arches are estimated using the non-dimensional time, load and shape parameters and the results are also compared with those from the linear analysis. It is found that geometric nonlinearity plays and important role in the analysis of shallow arches and the probability of buckling failure is getting higher as arches become shallower.

  • During concrete placement, the formwork structure supports the weight of concrete mass. The complexity of the operation can cause concentrated workloads, which in turn brings about a collapse of the temporary structure. As a countermeasure, the operation needs to be constantly monitored to maintain safety and prevent accidents. This paper presents a USN (Ubiquitous Sensor Network)-based safety monitoring system for formwork construction. The system takes advantage of ubiquitous technology in monitoring the behavior of the formwork structure such as deflection, load weight, and tilting. The collected data are sent to the host computer wirelessly for real time monitoring. The data can be then compared with the allowed limits on guidelines. The comparison can indicate whether the concrete placement operation is executed in a safe condition.

  • Up to now, common studies of top base have concentrated upon bearing capacity and settlement by in-situ loading test in Japan and Korea. But most of all preceding study for top base must analyze how to deliver overburden loading on bottom of foundation. Therefore, in this study, the stress delivery mechanism of Top-Base Foundation developed in Japan and Floating Top Base developed in Korea is investigated through numerical analysis and laboratory model test. Analyzing the load delivery mechanism of top base, it was found that the division rate of load reduction of top base for overburden load was largest in peripheral skin friction between the top base and the crushed stone. Further, total stress dispersion angle of Top-Base Foundation including internal stress dispersion effect of top base was $41.8^{\circ}$ and total stress dispersion angle of Floating Top Base was $44.5^{\circ}$.

  • This study was carried out to analyze the effect of wind load on the stability of a 50ton container crane using wind tunnel test and provide a container crane designer with data which can be used in a wind resistance design of a container crane assuming that a wind load at 75m/s wind velocity is applied on a container crane. Data acquisition conditions for this experiment were established in accordance with the similarity. The scale of a container crane dimension, wind velocity and time were chosen as 1/200, 1/13.3 and 1/15. And this experiment was implemented in an Effect type atmospheric boundary-layer wind tunnel with $11.52m^2$ cross-section area. Each directional drag and overturning moment coefficients were investigated and uplift forces at each supporting point due to the wind load were analyzed.

  • This study investigates the effect of cylindrical baffle arrays behind a rigid barrier on debris flow behavior and dynamic impact load. Small-scale tests were performed with various transverse blockage ratios and row numbers of baffles. High-speed cameras were installed at the flume's top and side, and load cells were installed in front of the rigid barrier. Moreover, glass beads simulated large boulders with debris flow in the flume. Test results revealed that the impact load of debris flow on the rigid barrier was significantly reduced using the cylindrical baffles behind the rigid barrier. In addition, the increased transverse blockage ratio of baffle arrays led to a greater impact load of debris flow because of flow suppression due to the baffle arrays.

  • Generally, the repeated traffic loading condition should be considered to predict the long-term deformation on road foundations or foundation systems. However, it is not easy to estimate long-term deformation on multi-layered system like roads and railways. For more quantitative analysis, mechanistic-empirical approach requires proper analytical tool, material's model, and material properties of foundation geomaterials under both traffic and environmental loadings. In this study, therefore, laboratory data from the long-term repeated load triaxial tests were used to predict accumulated deformation on pavement foundations and the results were analyzed based on the nonlinear models and stress state considered. All these results are presented and verified on laboratory based scale using the finite element analysis with the deformation characteristics of foundation geomaterials at various stress states.

  • Experimental study has been performed in order to investigate the behavior of RC beams strengthened with externally bonded post-tensioned CFRP (Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer) strips. Specimens consist of 9 small-scaled specimens with the different post-tensioning level as a main test parameter. A control specimen and specimens with simply bonded CFRP strips have been manufactured to compare the structural performances of prestressed system. From the test results, it was observed that the specimens strengthened with simply bonded CFRP strips showed debonding failure below 50% of CFRP tensile strength due to premature debonding. On the other hand, all the specimens strengthened with post- tensioned CFRP strips reached the rupture strength of the CFRP strip. The cracking and yielding loads were also increased proportionally to the post-tensioning level, but the ultimate loads were nearly equal regardless of the post-tensioning level.

  • In this study, we performed a loading test to evaluate the effect of load distribution on continuous two-span plate-girder bridges with or without bottom lateral bracing using one-fifth-scale bridge specimens. From the test results, when specimens with lateral bracing were loaded eccentrically, the load distribution capacity of the concrete deck and cross beam improved and greater loading was distributed to the other side of the girder subjected to loading. The load distribution rate of the specimens with and without lateral bracing system was evaluated from the analytical model that was verified by the test results. From the result of the quantitative evaluation, when specimen without lateral bracing was loaded eccentrically, mostly 21% of loading according to the concrete deck was distributed to the other side of the girder subjected to loading. However, when specimen with lateral bracing was loaded eccentrically, the load distribution rate increased by 1.7 times as all cross beams, bracing and concrete deck participated in load distribution. The reason is that the torsional rigidity increased as the model with lateral bracing behaved like a pseudo-closed box section.
