An organic substance, hydroquinone is used to form clathrate compounds in order to identify separation characteristics of carbon dioxide in flue gas. Formed samples were analyzed by means of the solid-state $^{13}C$ nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and Raman spectroscopic methods to examine enclthration behaviors of guest species. In addition, elemnetal analysis was also performed in order to evaluate separation efficiency of $CO_2$ in a quantitative way. Based on the experimental results obtained, $CO_2$ molecules are found to be captured into the clathrate compound more readily than $N_2$ molecules. Moreover, because such preferential enclathration is even more significant at low pressure conditions, $CO_2$ separation/recovery from flue gas can be achieved with minimizing additional energy cost for the technique. Experimental results obtained in this study can provide useful information on separation techniques of flue gas or selective separation of gas mixtures in the future.

Because of the difference of the relative reactivity between two hydroxyl groups of the hydroquinone due to the steric hindrance of the substituent, many combinations of the substituent direction in the polyesters derived from asymmetrical diphenols such as monosubstituted hydroquinones was expected. It was studied how the mode of the direction affected the properties of the resulting polyesters in terms of the transition temperatures of the thermotropic polyesters prepared from terephthalic acid, 2,4-dichloroterephthalic acid, and phenylhydroquinone by the reaction using p-Toluenesulfonylchloride in pyridine. The direction was tried to control the relative reactivity by changing the reaction temperature and addition time of the hydroquinone, and by modifying it through an association of the hydroquinones with DMF.

Carbon nano sphere(CNS) and nano bowl of carbon(NBC) containing 1.0 wt% copper were prepared by impregnation method and their catalytic activity was compared in the phenol hydroxylation with hydrogen peroxide in the presence of water and acetonitrile as a solvent, respectively. Cu content of catalysts was determined by EDS, and BET, pore volume, pore size and pore size distribution were compared. For both catalysts, phenol conversion, $H_2O_2$ efficiency and yield of catechol and hydroquinone were higher in the presence of water as a solvent than those in the presence of actonitrile. And catalytic activity such as phenol conversion and $H_2O_2$ efficiency of 1.0 Cu/CNS is about two times higher than that of 1.0 Cu/NBC in water solvent.

(Fe, Co)/zeolite catalysts such as (Fe, Co)/NaY, (Fe, Co)/NaBeta and (Fe, Co)/HUSY were prepared by ion-exchange method and their catalytic performance was examined in the hydroxylation of phenol with $H_2O_2$ for the production of catechol. The (Fe, Co)/NaBeta catalyst showed its best performance at reaction temperature=$70^{\circ}C$, molar ratio of phenol/$H_2O_2=3$, weight ratio of phenol/catalyst=50 and weight ratio of solvent (water)/phenol=6 as 20% of phenol conversion, 77% of the selectivity for the hydroxylation, 70% of the selectivity for catechol, and 2.5 of the formation ratio of catechol/hydroquinone. The (Fe, Co)/zeolite catalysts showed the reproducible activities without deactivation after repeated regeneration. The fresh and used(Fe, Co)/zeolites were characterized by XRD, UV-VIS DRS, and XPS and their catalytic performance was discussed based on these characterization results.

In this study, calcination temperature dependence of TS-1 catalyst was investigated in the hydroxylation of phenol with hydrogen peroxide during the regeneration of catalyst. Catalyst was regenerated 5 times by calcining at $550^{\circ}C$ and $700^{\circ}C$, respectively. When the catalyst was regenerated at $550^{\circ}C$ after 5th regeneration phenol conversion was decreased from 22.9% to 15.1% and at $700^{\circ}C$ after 5th regeneration phenol conversion was decreased from 22.9% to 18.8%. For formation ratio of catechol/hydroquinone was increased from 1.28 to 1.45 after 5th regeneration at $550^{\circ}C$, and from 1.28 to 1.20 after 5th regeneration at $700^{\circ}C$. The main reasons for deactivation of the catalyst were suggested by analyzing chemical/physical properties with XRD, UV-vis spectra, $N_2$ adsorption/desorption and TGA, and evaluating the catalytic activity such as phenol conversion and product selectivity.
4-(6-bromohexyloxy)benzoic acid was synthesized from benzyl 4-Hydroxybenzoate and 1,6-dibromohexane. It was reacted with hydroquinone to obtain a new mesogenic ester having an bromine group. One kind of new photoresponsive coumarin compound was prepared by the reaction of mesogenic ester with coumarin sensitive to the ultraviolet. Structures of the compound were identified by FT-IR and $^1H$-NMR spectroscopies. Their phase transition temperatures and thermal stability were also investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), polarized optical microscopy (POM) and x-ray diffraction analysis. From optical polarizing microscopy, the prepared compound was found to show enantiotropic liquid crystallinity with smectic and nematic textures.
A series of liquid crystalline polyesters containing X-shaped mesogenic groups in main chain were synthesized through the solution polymerization of 2,5-di(4-substituted benzoate)hydroquinones and 4,4'-dicarboxy-1,8-diphenoxyoctane. The structures and properties of synthesized polymers were investigated by $^1H$-NMR, FT-IR, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetry analysis (TGA), polarized optical microscopy (POM) and wide angel X-ray diffraction (WXRD). Inherent viscosities (${\eta}_{inh}$) of polymers were measured between 0.35 and 0.66 dL/g in 1,1,2,2-tetrachloroethane, and they were easily soluble in most of organic solvents used for this experiment. All polymers revealed relatively low melting transition temperature ($T_m$) and crystallinity, and also showed thermotropic nematic liquid crystallinity when they were heated to their melting temperatures. These properties of polymers were presumably due to the presence of the bulky substituting groups on the hydroquinone unit in mesogenic group.
In this study, the effect of molecular features of guest molecules on the structure, property, and formation of poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA)/beta-cyclodextrin (bCD) inclusion compound hybrid films was investigated using three types of guest molecules such as hydroquinone (HQ), arbutin (AB), and tranexamic acid (TA). First, the successful formation of inclusion compounds between bCD and the guest molecules, and polymer/inclusion compound hybrid were proved using Raman spectroscopy. The effect of bCD-based inclusion compounds on the structure and property of PVA matrix composites containing inclusion compounds was also studied using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and thermal analyses such as differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). It was notable that the effect of TA to the crystalline structure of the PVA was significantly different from that of using other guest molecules including HQ and AB. It was also supported by a simple molecular simulation result. This article will be a good example for demonstrating the effect of molecular characteristics on the inclusion compound formation in polymer films, which can provide important information for relevant future research.
