Levels of total, neutral and polar lipids from the seeds of eight species of the Cucurbitaceae f Cucurbita moschata, Lufa cylindrica, Citrullus vulgari, Cucumis melo var. makuwa, Cucumis satvus, Lag leucantha. Trichosanthes kirilowii and Momordica charantia, were determinded, and their fatty compositions were also analyzed by gas-liquid chromatography. The results were summarized as foll. Lipid contents of the seeds range from 21.9 to 50.7%, which contained 98% up of neutral lipi the fatty acid compositon of ottal lipids from the seeds of Cucurbita moschata, Lufa cylindrica, Ci vulgari, Cucumis melo var. makuwa, Cucumis sativus and Lagenaria leucantha, linoleic acid is the mos dominant component(56.8${\sim}$84.0%) followed by oleic acid(5.7${\sim}$22.2%) and palmitic acid(6.1${\sim}$1) with a trace amount of ${\alpha}-linolenic$ acid(below 0.6%). On the contrary, the seed oils of Tricho kirilowii and Momordica charantia are characterized by presence of considerable amounts of con trienoic acid such as punicic acid($_{9c.11t.13c-}C_{18:3}$) and ${\alpha}-eleostearic$ acid($_{9c.11t.13c-}C_{18:3}$). For example total lipids of T. kirilowii seeds were mainly composed of linoleic acid(40.5%) and punicic acid(3) in the fatty acid composition, while those of M. charantia seeds predominantly comprised ${\alpha}-eleos$ acid as a main component(66.9%), accompanied by oleic acid(11.7%) and linoleic acid(10.4%). oil ${\beta}-eleostearic$ acid($_{9t.11t.13c-}C_{18:3}$) was checked as a trace. Fatty acid profiles of neutral lipids close resemblance to those of total lipids in all the seed oils, but are different from those of polar In particular, conjugate trienoic acids including punicic acid and ${\alpha}-eleostearic$ acid which are oc as the most abundant component in both neutral lipids of T. kirilowii and M. charantia seed oils, ar ent in a extremely small amount in both polar lipids. The fatty acid distribution in the polar lipid the samples except for T. kirilowii and M. charantia seed oils, showed a tendency of consid increased level of saturated fatty acids(25.0${\sim}$29.4%) compared with that in the neutral lipids(9.9%). The results obtained in this experiment suggest us that the seed oils of the Cucurbitaceae

Currently, methods for controlling weeds in organically produced crops have not been as effective as conventional methods. This research was carried out to determine the herbicidal effects of leaf, stem, fruit, root extracts of Trichosanthes kirilowii. The extraction methods used were water, boiling water and ethanol. The characteristics of potential herbicidal components among extraction methods were investigated by using the following solvent fractions: hexane, chloroform, ethyl acetate, butanol, and water. Generally, water extracts provided the best on inhibition of germination rate, plant height, and root length in cucumber and barley. Specifically, extractions made from fruit parts of T. kirilowii provided the greatest inhibition effect on plant growth in cucumber and barely. Inhibition of germination rate, plant height, and root length in cucumber and barley in solvent fractions was the best in water fractions, but there were no significant differences among the other fractions. Digitaria siliaris and Solanum nigrum were controlled 80-100% by 5% extractions of water fraction. However, there were no herbicidal effects from foliar treatment in cucumber, barley, black nightshade, and henry crabgrass by 5% extractions of the water fraction. These results show that extractions of T. kirilowii can be used for controlling some weeds in organically produced crops.
The study was conducted to develop new materials of functional foods from natural resources. Fortyeight medicinal plants were screened on inhibitory activity of angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE), a protein elevating blood pressure. The water extracts of Armoracia aerial part, Cynanchum radix, Euonymus branch, Phyllostachys stem, Trichosanthes seed, and methanol extract of Silybum aerial part were showed strong inhibitory activity (above 70%) on ACE at the final concentration of $4,000\;{\mu}g\;ml^{-1}$. Among the plant extracts, water extracts of Phyllostachys taeniam and Trichosanthes seed were especially showed strong inhibitory activity (above 25%) at $500\;{\mu}g\;ml^{-1}$. These two plants are expected good candidate for development into anti-hypertensive materials.
Trichoxanthes Kirilowii with high starch-content was investigated to utilize as a food source. The weight and starch content of Trichoxanthes Kirilowii roots increased rapid1y in proporion to the growth period. The seasonal variations of the starch content were $36.5{\sim}48.0%$ (dry basis) from June to December. The chemical properties of natural growth soils of Trichoxanthes Kirilowii contained more organic matter and total nitrogen content than citrus orchard soils, but less mineral; P,K,Ca and Mg. To prepare starch with the plant root, the centrifugal method(3,000 rpm, 20 min) obtained the highest yield. The industrial-scale method, was similar to the processing of sweetpotato starch (tank precipitation method), and was good in quality. The starch granules were mainly spherical with diameters ranging from $5{\sim}16{\mu}$. The density of the starch was 1.535 and amylose content was about 26.7%. The X-ray diffraction pattern showed that the granules were of the B-type. The blue value of starch, amylose and amylopectin was 0.46, 0.80 and 0.18, respectively. The starch contained 0.05% ash, 0.35% crude protein and 34 mg% phosphorus. and had an inital pasting temperature of $63.5^{\circ}C$. The color intensity of the starch which iodine gave rise to absorption maxima at 670nm. The starch paste showed high stability during cold storage at $5^{\circ}C$.
The effects of Trichosanthes kirilowii Max. subfractions, which has long been used as a wild vegetable and folk medicine, on insulin activity and acute toxicity were investigated. Diabetes melitus was induced in male Sprague-Dawley rats by the injection of streptozotocin(STZ) into the tail vein at a dose of 45mg/kg. The hexane fraction of the plant was subfractioned by silica gel column chromatography and were administered orally for 14 days and the normal and STZ-control group were orally administered with tween 80. The body weight gain was monitored and plasma levels of glucose, cholesterol, triglyceride, free fatty acid HDL-cholesterol were determined. The plasma activities of aspartate aminotransferase(AST) and alanine aminotransferase (ALT) were analysed. The subjraction A of hexane fraction lowered plasma glucose levels significantly and increased insulin activity compared to that of STZ-control. The activities of AST and ALT were decreased by administration of subfractions A and C of hexane fraction. The intakes of the hexane fraction of Trichosanthes kirilowii Max. did not showed the acute toxicity. It is suggested from the results that the subfraction A of the hexane fraction of Trichosanthes kirilowii Max. showed a hypoglycemic effect on diabetic rats and that the subfraction may be beneficial for insulin secreation.
In this study, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities of the extract of different organs such as seed, fruit and root from Trichosanthes kirilowii Maxim. (TKM) were investigated in vitro. Among organs of TKM, the methanol extract of seed showed weak 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging activities with $10.4{\pm}0.1%$ and $25.5{\pm}1.1%$ at $50{\mu}g/mL$ and $100{\mu}g/mL$, respectively, and strong 2,2-azino-bis-(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulphonicacid) (ABTS) radical scavenging activities with $72.4{\pm}6.3%$ and $96.4{\pm}2.3%$ at $50{\mu}g/mL$ and $100{\mu}g/mL$, respectively. Anti-inflammatory effects of the extracts were investigated by measuring nitric oxide (NO) production, mRNA expression of inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) and cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) in LPS-induced Raw 264.7 macrophage cells. The methanol extracts of seed and fruit at $50{\mu}g/mL$ potently suppressed LPS-stimulated production of NO and reduced the expression of iNOS mRNA. The methanol extracts of seed and fruit also reduced the expression of COX-2 mRNA remarkably. Therefore, seed and fruit of TKM may be utilized for a wide range of health benefits associated with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities.

The purpose of this study is to examine vegetation of the outer walls of the Jeongyi Town Wall in Jeju and analyze the characteristics and problems identified, for suggesting preliminary data for selecting species of plants appropriate for the greening of the walls in the southern temperate climate region, including Jeju. The result of this study is as follows. The number of plants growing naturally around the walls of the town was identified to be 52 taxa. Based on the list of naturalized plants, there are 5 taxa; Sonchus oleraceus, Houttuynia cordata, Crassocephalum crepidioides, Erigeron annuus and Lamium purpureum. The number of species by district was from 3 to 14 taxa with 7.1 taxa on average. Analyzing by the constancy class, plants in class III included Sedum bulbiferum, Trichosanthes kirilowii, Hedera rhombea and Boehmeria nivea. Manipulation of the species composition table shows that the number of plant species growing naturally around the walls of Jeongyi Town Wall is a total of 52 taxa, including 11 taxa by differential species of community and 41 taxa by companion species. The types of plants very useful for the covering of the walls are evergreen climbing vine, such as Hedera rhombea, Ficus thunbergii and Euonymus fortunei and deciduous climbing vine, such as Parthenocissus tricuspidata, Trichosanthes kirilowii and Paederia scandens. In addition, Ficus stipulata is identified as a vegetation more appropriate for the southern-ward lattice-blocked walls. Woody plants, such as Akebia quinata, Celastrus flagellaris, Ampelopsis brevipedunculata for. citrulloides, Rubus hirsutus, Clematis apiifolia and herbaceous plants, such as Dioscorea tenuipes, D. quinqueloba, D. nipponica, Cayatia japonica and Paederia scandens var. angustifolia are highly useful materials for climbing plants for covering the walls of the southern province. Pteridophyte, such as Lemmaphyllum microphyllum, Pteris multifida, Cyrtomium falcatum and Lygodium japonicumare suggested as very useful for increasing unique regional characteristics of the southern province, including Jeju.
This study examined the inhibitory effect of extracts of Trichosanthes kirilpwii sorted according to the parts on the growth of HL-60 cells. The growth of HL-60 leukemia cells was markedly inhibited by the treatment of the 80% methanol extract of roots (10 $\mu\textrm{g}$/mι), stems (50$\mu\textrm{g}$/mι), pips (10$\mu\textrm{g}$/mι), and gourds (100 $\mu\textrm{g}$/mι), or the ethylacetate fraction of leaves (100 $\mu\textrm{g}$/mι). when the HL-60 cells were treated with the extracts of T. kirilpwii sorted according to the parts, DNA fragmentation and sub-G1 hypodiploid cells were observed. Moreover, T. kirilpwii extracts increased the level of the expression of the active form of caspase-3 and the activation of caspase-3 was demonstrated by the cleavage of poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase, a vital substrate of effector caspase. The results suggest that the inhibitory effect of extracts of T. kirilpwii sorted according to the parts on the growth of HL-60 cells seems to arise from the induction of apoptosis.

The striped fruit fly, Baetrocera scutellata (Diptera: Tephritidae), is one of the most important pests in Cucurbitaceae plants. Among 6 attractants for B. scutellata used, Cue-lure was shown better effect than the others. Newly emerged adult of B. scutellata had been occurred early June of the year tested. There were two peaks of occurrences of B. scutellata, one was from mid-July to early August and the other was early September suggesting that B. scutellata has two generation a year. The larva of B. seutellata damaging the female flower and stem of the pumpkin was found for the frist time on Korea. The blossoms were damaged and fallen by B. scutellata which were 53.8% of male flower and 30.7% of female flower in the 6 pumpkins. The pumpkin flowers were damaged 51.9% by B. scutellata. Especially thc pumpkin flowers damaged were shown 72.7% (1015/1397 individuals) from August to September. The larva of B. scutellata was found from the Trichosanthes kirilowii on 24 June 2009 in Jinan-gun Jeollabuk-do.
