  • This study tries to generalize the stream network by constructing rule-based modelling. A study on the map generalization tends to be concentrated on development of algorithms for modification of linear features and evaluations to the limited cartographic elements. Rule-based modelling can help to improve previous algorithms by application of generalization process with the results that analyzing mapping principles and spatial distribution patterns of geographical phenomena. Rule-based modelling can be applied to generalize various cartographic elements, and make an effective on multi-scaling mapping in the digital environments. In this research, nile-based modelling for stream network is composed of generalization rule, algorithm for centerline extraction and linear features. Before generalization, drainage pattern was analyzed by the connectivity with lake to minimize logical errors. As a result, 17 streams with centerline are extracted from 108 double-lined streams. Total length of stream networks is reduced as 17% in 1:25,000 scale, and as 29% in 1:50,000. Simoo algorithm, which is developed to generalize linear features, is compared to Douglas-Peucker(D-P) algorithm. D-P made linear features rough due to the increase of data point distance and widening of external angle. But in Simoo, linear features are smoothed with the decrease of scale.

  • The purpose of this study is to find out the characteristics of landform in Geoje-Do using GIS and DTED data. The characteristics of landform in Geoje-Do are as follows; First, the height-range of Geoje-Do is $0{\sim}580m$, and the average elevation of it is 124m. Volcanic and granite region is mainly appeared at high elevation-region. But, we can't find out outstanding difference of elevation, according to its geology. The second. the slope-range of Geoje-Do is $0{\sim}52$ degree, and the average slope of it is 17.6 degree. The slope of volcanic and granite area is more steeper than any other region. But the results of analysis of the geology in Geojo-Do, don't show outstanding difference of the slope. The third, the area-rate of the aspect of Geoje-Do is almost same in all direction. And the area-rate of south-west direction is the highest. According to the geology of Geoje-Do, granite is distributed the most widely, and the area of volcanic and granite occupy 60% of entire island's area. According to analysis of influence of geology with elevation, geology has little relationship with elevation. According to analysis of geology and drainage network, streams are inclined to be developed well in Alluvium area. Drainage network is well developed throughout the entire island, except southeast area. The highest order of stream is 4 in 1:25,000 topographic map. The density of stream in Geoje-Do is very high, such as 1.6. The bifurcation-ratio of stream is also higher than 4 in all order. The length-ratio of stream is ranged from 1.24 to 3.25. According to the relationship between order and elevation. order is the greater, elevation is the lower. According to the relationship between order and slope, order is the greater, slope is the gentler. In this study, we use DTED Data, and compare it with topographic map data. According to the comparison, there is a little difference between DTED data and topographic map data. Therefore, to use DTED data in landform analysis, it is required coordinate matching process. This process is very important, and take very long time. Thus, if you use DTED in landform analysis, some processes are required. DTED data can be taken very easily, but its using is not simple. Because coordinate adjust is very hard work.

  • In order to investigate the relation between the phytoplankton and the catch fluctuation of set net fishing grounds located in the coastal waters of Yeosu, phytoplankton observations on the fishing ground were carried out by the training ship of Yeosu, Fisheries University from April to November in 1990, and the data obtained were compared with the catch data from the joint market of yeosu fisheries cooperative society in 1990. The results obtained are summarized as follows: 1) The phytoplanktons were more appeared in summer than in spring or autumn and their quantity was much in the shore of Dolsan-do, and little in the offshore waters distributed in the shores of Sori-do and Sejon-do, Thus, the quantity of the planktons could be used for estimating the distribution of watermass. 2) The fishes caught by the set net were arranged in the order of catch amounts as follows: Spanish mackerel > Hair tail > Common mackerel > Sardine > Anchovy > Horse mackerel > Yellow tail. The catches of anchovy and Sardine were high in April to May and Hair tail. Horse mackerel and Common mackerel were caught from June to October. But Spanish mackerel were caught during the whole period of fishing. 3) The catches by set nets showed a correlation with the quantity of phytoplanktons. The planktons appeared most in the inner waters. influenced largely by the inflow of land waters in summer. and the catches were high in summer when the offshore water was distributed least. Therefore, the most important factor influencing the catches were regarded to be the productivity of food organism in inner water into which abundant nutrients were supplied by the inflow of land waters. That is, the fluctuation of catches by set nets seemed to be influenced mainly by the productivity of food organism.

  • There are a lot of difference between the surface settlement and the differential settlement measured at the Busan New Port, where the dredged and reclaimed clay layer exists and below the clay is originally thickly distributed. To find the cause and solution of this, the actual conditions of each differential settlement used for the soft ground improvement, characteristics, installation method, measurement frequency, measurement data management, and data analysis of each type were considered. In the deep soft ground improvement work where large deformation occurs, the bending deformation of the screw-type differential settlement gauge is less than that of other types of measuring instruments, so there is less risk of loss, and the reliability of data is relatively high as the instruments are installed by drilling for each stratum. Since the greater the amount of high-precision settlement measurement data, the higher the settlement analysis precision. It is necessary to manage with higher criteria than the measurement frequency suggested in the standard specification. For the data management of the differential settlement gauge, it is desirable to create graphs of the settlement and embankment height of the relevant section over time, such as surface, differential, and settlement of pore water pressure gauge for each point. In the case of multi-layered ground with different compression characteristics, it is more appropriate to perform settlement analysis by calculating the consolidation characteristics of each stratum using a differential settlement data.

  • By Using MOS-1 satellite image(taken on 24 April 1990, after slash and burn), Shifting cultivation areas were estimated for the sub-basin area. In tropical region to analyse the correlation between shifting cultivation rate and bifurcation rate network which was calculated from topographic map, PC Arc - Info and IDRISI GIS software were used. As the distribution rate of shifting cultivation increases, the bifurcation rate is high. From the correlation analysis between the shifting cultivation and drainage network, it was found that shifting cultivation leads to land degradation and head erosion at the stream valley. To prevent such problems, it is mecessary that shifting cultivation areas should be converted to permanent paddy fields.

  • At present, summer cloudburst and local torrential rainfalls have increased in this country, because of climatic change. Therefore, studies on prevention of soil loss have been actively proceeded, and Korea Forest Service has offered landslide hazard map. Landslide hazard map divides risks into 5 classes, by giving weight with 9 kinds of elements. In August 25 2014, soil loss occurred in the whole Oryun Tunnel, Geumjeong-gu, Busan, because of local torrential heavy rain. As a result of comparing with landslide hazard map, the area where soil loss occurred in reality is a safety zone on hazard map. Rainfall, soil map, geological map, forest type map, gradient, drainage network, watershed, basin shape, and efflux of the whole Oryun Tunnel where soil loss occurred were analyzed. As a result of an analysis, it is judged that soil, forest type, much efflux and peak discharge, degree of water network and basin shape of a place where landslide occurred are causes of soil loss. It is judged that efflux, peak discharge, and basin shape by the localized rainfall that is not considered in landslide hazard map of them are the biggest causes of soil loss. It is judged that efflux, peak discharge, degree of water network and basin shape by the rainfall are important through a study on a causual analysis on soil loss in the whole Oryun Tunnel where is one of occurrence area where a lot of propertywere lost by the record local torrential rainfalls. A localized torrential downpour should be prepared by considering these elements on judgement of a landslide hazard area.

  • Korea Forest Service made the landslide hazard map for all mountainous districts over the country in May 2005. In this study, we selected landslide areas occurred in Jeonbuk from 02 August 2005 to 03 August 2005 as the study area. We extracted landslide areas using images taken by PKNU 3 System, which was developed by PE&RS Laboratory in Dept. of Satellite Information Sciences, Pukyong National University and verified the accuracy of landslide hazard map by overlaying landslide hazard areas extracted by PKNU 3 images. And we analyzed characteristics of an altitude, a gradient, an inclined direction, a flow length, a flow accumulation for landslide areas using mountainous terrain analysis and Stream Network analysis of ArvView 3.3. As a result of this study, it is necessary to adjust the unitage(%) by the class and to modify and improve the score table for prediction of landslide-susceptible area forming the foundation of making the landslide hazard maps.

  • Most of previous landform classification methods using DEM compares the values between the center of the cell and the surrounding cells, which in turn, greatly depends on analysis scale. To overcome the problem of scale-dependency, a new classification scheme is developed, which is called "Geomorphons". Unlike the traditional approaches using DEM, Geomorphons is the way which compares the level with other cells against the criteria cell. As a pilot study, we classify the landforms of Pyeongchang-Gun in Korea. Then, we compare the result with the other methods such as Topographic Position Index. Through the systematic analysis, we obtain the following findings. First, Geomorphons can reduce the time for the classification of landforms because of using unsupervised classification. Second, Geomorphons is little dependent on change in the scale, which can provide a pilot tool for reconnaissance study for covering large area.

  • This research aims 1) to characterize the spatial distribution of low relief landforms (plains) via analyses of a Digital Elevation Model (DEM), 2) to classify plains according to morphological and genetic similarity, and 3) to develop a model to explain forming processes of plains in the Korean peninsula. Plains can easily be separated from high relief mountaneous areas by analyzing the DEM. The overall morphological and locational characteristics of plains can be categorized into lava plains, fluvial-marine plains, erosional plains, intermontane basins, and higher ground plains. It is concluded that the characteristic of each plain type is decided by base-level changes caused by tectonic uplift and sea-level changes, and topological relationship of different rock types. Different plain types do not exist independently, but connected with each others along stream networks. The model developed is able to combine the morphological characteristics of plains with the channel network to conceptualize characteristics and development pathways of plains in the Korean Peninsula.
