Dynamic Characteristics Analysis of Filament-wound Composite Towers for Large Scale Offshore Wind-Turbine (대형 해상풍력발전용 필라멘트 와인딩 복합재 타워의 동적 특성에 관한 연구)

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the buckling load of filament-wound composite towers for large scale wind-turbine using finite element method(FEM). To define material properties, we used both the effective property method and the stacking properties method. The effective properties method is to assume that composite consists of one ply. The stacking properties method is to assume that composite consists of some stacked plies. First, linear buckling analysis of the tower, filament-wounded with angles of [${\pm}30$] was carried out by two methods for composite material properties, the stacking method and the effective method. and FE analysis was performed for the composite towers according to filament winding angles of [${\pm}30$], [${\pm}45$], [${\pm}60$]. FE analysis results using the stacking properties of the composite were in good agreement with the results by the effective properties. The difference between FEM results by material properties methods was approximately 0~2.3% in buckling Analysis and approximately 0~0.6% in modal analysis. And above the angle of [${\pm}60$], there was a little change of buckling load.

First, a modal analysis of the tower, filament-wound with angles of $[{\pm}30]$, was carried out using the two methods for composite material properties, the stacking method and effective method. The FE analysis results using the stacking properties of the composite were in good agreement with the results from the effective properties method.   • The fiber reinforced composite material is widely used in the multi-industrial field where the weight reduction of the infrastructure is demanded because of their high specific modulus and specific strength. Pressure vessels using this composite material have two main merits which are to cut down energy by reducing weight and to have long-term life due to corrosion resistance. In this paper, we developed optimal design module of laminate for CNG composite pressure vessel winding E-glass/epoxy based on Von-Mises yield criterion, Tsai-Hill theory and stress ratio using finite element method and ANSYS RSM(Response Surface Method).

  • This paper presents the results of theoretical analysis and experimental test to verify the size effect on the fiber strength of filament wound pressure vessel. As a test method, a series of fully scaled hoop ring tests with filament wound carbon fiber-epoxy has been conducted. Test results showed remarkable size effect on fiber strength. And, as an analytical method, the WWLM(Weibull weakest link model) and SMFM(sequential multi-step failure model) were considered and compared to hoop ring test data. The analysis results showed significantly lower fiber strength value than that of test data. Through the modification of length size effect, modified SMFM is suggested. The fiber strengths from modified SMFM showed good agreement with test data.

  • Carbon fiber/epoxy composites are typical brittle materials and have low impact properties. Recently, it is important to investigate impact characteristics of carbon fiber composites because of increasing use as automobile parts and high pressure hydrogen vessels of fuel cell electric vehicles for light weight. In this study, the low velocity impact properties of carbon fiber/epoxy composites fabricated by a filament winding method are studied. The low velocity impact properties were measured by performing tests according to ASTM D7136. The low velocity impact simulations were carried out using commercial structural analysis software, Abaqus. The absorbed energy and the delamination shapes were compared between the experimental and simulation results. The numerical analysis method showed that the absorbed energy decreased with the reduced number of cohesive elements in the composite models.

  • The studies on the non-destructive testing methods of the composite materials are very important for improving their reliability and safety. AE(Acoustic Emission) can evaluate the defects by detecting the emitting strain energy when elastic waves are generated by the generation and growth of a crack, plastic deformation, fiber breakage, matrix cleavage or delamination. In this paper, the AE signals of the filament wound composite cylinder and sandwich cylinder during the pressure test were measured and analyzed. The signal characteristics of PVDF sensors were measured, and an AE signal analyzer which had the band-pass filter and L-C resonance filter were designed and fabricated. Also, the crack detection capability of the fabricated AE signal analyzer wes evaluated during the pressure tests of the filament wound composite cylinder and the sandwich cylinder.

  • The purpose of this paper is to show a reliable analytical method to predict the deflections of F/W Composite Motor Case. Structural analysis and testing of a Carbon/Epoxy Composites Motor Case for Pressure Loadings were performed. This paper presents the development of 3-D layered axi-symmetric solid element for finite element analysis. Finite element analyses were preformed considering fiber angle variation in longitudinal and thickness direction by ANSYS. The analytical results agree well with experimental results.

  • In this study, designing of a Type 4 pressure vessel using the filament winding method was conducted. In order to prevent leakage in consideration of the design of the hydrogen storage tank, a liner was designed by applying high-density polyethylene (HDPE), and the composite structure was designed by stacking carbon/epoxy in the hoop and helical directions. As a theoretical approach, the angle of the helical fiber and fiber thickness of each hoop and helix were designed. The safety of the design was verified using the commercial software ANSYS.

  • Filament wound structures such as pressure tanks, pipes and motor cases of rockets are widely used in the aerospace application. The determination of a proper winding angle and thickness is very important to decrease manufacturing difficulties and to increase structural efficiency. In this study, possible winding angles considering the slippage between a fiber and a mandrel surface are calculated using the semi-geodesic path equation. In addition, finite element analysis using ABAcUS are performed to predict the behavior of filament wound structures considering continuous change of winding angle along the dome part. The water-pressuring tests of 3rd stage motor case are performed to verify the analysis procedure. The strain gages are attached on the surface in the fiber direction. Progressive failure analysis is performed to predict the burst pressure and the weakest region of the motor case. The effect of reinforcement is also studied to increase its performance.
