  • Numerical simulations have been performed for assessment of compressibility correction of two-equation turbulent models suitable for large scale separation flows perturbed by a pintle strokes. Two-equation turbulence models, the low Reynolds k-${\varepsilon}$ and the k-${\omega}$ SST models with or without compressibility correction proposed by Wilcox and Sarkar are evaluated. The detail flow structures are observed and static pressures along nozzle wall are compared with experimental results. Mach disk location and pressure recovery profiles in flow separation region are noticeably distinct between turbulent models of k-${\varepsilon}$ and k-${\omega}$ SST. The compressible effect corrections to those models improve resolving of separation flow behaviors. The compressibility corrections to k-${\varepsilon}$ model have provided very comparable results with test data.

  • In this paper, unsteady characteristics of pressure in solid rocket motor were analyzed by using response of pintle actuation, pressure and thrust data from ground test. Pressure and thrust in solid rocket motor can be controlled in real time by varying nozzle throat area with pintle, installed in the valve. Unsteady characteristics of pressure can be observed in this system occurred by various reasons. Two critical reasons, error of pintle actuation and ablation of center tube, are found and effects of each reason can be analyzed individually by re-prediction of pressure with response of pintle actuation and analyzing thrust to pressure ratio.

  • For DACS system which controls pintle position to change nozzle throat area, one actuator has been used for each modulatable pintle thruster. This ten actuator system drove to complex system structure and complicated control mechanism. In order to overcome this shortcomings, international patents were reviewed, analysed and presented.

  • A study on the effect of altitude-compensation and the possibility of throttling is performed by designing an E-D nozzle that is a type of altitude-compensation nozzles. In order to examine the effect of the altitude-compensation, a CFD analysis is conducted by using three kinds (sea level, altitude at 10 km and 16 km) of the atmosphere condition while maintaining the chamber pressure. Results show that the effective nozzle exit area is also gradually increased when the altitude get increased. Understanding the possibility of throttling, a CFD analysis is conducted by moving the location of the pintle. Just as same as a general pintle thruster, the chamber pressure and thrust are increased when the nozzle throat area get decreased.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate unsteady-state characteristics of a pintle thruster with various pintle speed. Based on steady state experimental results, non-linear pintle stroke equation is obtained and applied to the unsteady state experimental system. For the unsteady state experiments, three different pintle speeds are used: 3.10 mm/s, 5.65 mm/s, 10.83 mm/s, respectively. Results show that backward pintle stroke results in faster convergence time because of high chamber pressure during backward pintle stroke sequence. During the forward and backward process, thrust curve shows singular points. These phenomenons is caused by variation of mass flow rate, which is mainly due to changes of both chamber pressures and nozzle throat area. This behavior becomes distinctive for a faster pintle speed case.

  • Numerical simulation was carried out for the SNECMA modulatable thrust devices, with four different nozzle contraction angle $45^{\circ}$, $60^{\circ}$, $83^{\circ}$, and $90^{\circ}$, respectively. Results show that $83^{\circ}$ nozzle contraction is better in that it comes up with good thrust level with small aerodynamic load.

  • The performance of pintle thruster is analyzed by using the pintle thruster performance analysis model which integrating the element models introduced in Part I. To verify the performance analysis, the results of the developed program are compared with the experimental data of kerosene/hydrogen peroxide liquid pintle thrusters. Based on the results, the characteristics of the pintle thruster are analyzed. The sensitivity analysis is performed to investigate the effect of thruster shape and operation parameters on performance characteristics using both OAT and scatter plot methods. The four performance parameters such as droplet diameter, film flow rate, O/F ratio, and nozzle throat diameter are evaluated to investigate their effects on characteristic speed, combustor pressure, and specific thrust.

  • Divert and attitude control system(DACS) plays an important role for orbit transfer and attitude control, and therefore becomes important subject for recent space vehicle and Precision Guided Missile(PGM) development. To develop DACS system, main research areas include shape combination of pintle and nozzle to maximize thrust change, and reduction of aerodynamic pintle load to minimizle pintle driving force, and development of multi-axis control algorithm. In this paper, introduction, classification, and overseas/domestic research and development program, and prospects of DACS are reviewed and summarized.

  • Continuous variable thrusters require precise thrust control to change the position or attitude of the aircraft and to control the pressure inside the combustion chamber. For this purpose, the thrust is adjusted by moving the pintle structure near the nozzle neck inside the combustion chamber by moving the pintle structure forward and backward, and the actuator is used to move the pintle structure. In this paper, we developed a actuator system for continuous variable thruster and load test system to simulate the load under operating conditions. Also, the performance test of the actuator was performed using the developed load test system
