The high predictive performance of fire detector models is essentially needed to assure the reliability of fire and evacuation modeling in the process of Performance-Based fire safety Design (PBD). The main objective of the present study is to measure input information in order to predictive the accurate activation time of fixed temperature heat detectors adopted in Fire Dynamics Simulator (FDS) as a representative fire model. To end this, Fire Detector Evaluator (FDE) which could be measured the device properties of detector was used, and the spot-type fixed temperature heat detectors of two thermistor types and one bimetal type were considered as research objectors. Activation temperature and Response Time Index (RTI) of detectors required for the fire modeling were measured, and then the RTI was measured for ceiling jet flow and vertical jet flow in consideration of the install location of detectors. The results of fire modeling using measured device properties were compared and validated with the experimental results of full-scale compartment fires. It was confirmed that, in result, the numerically predicted activation time of detector showed reasonable agreement with the measured activation time.
The Installation, Maintence, and Safety Control of Fire-fighting Systems Act of South Korea regulates that over 30-storey high-rise buildings including underground spaces should vitally perform the Performance-based Design to minimize property damage and personal injury as a fire risk assessment in advance. Therefore a PBD designer such as a fire safety professional engineer evaluate occupant's life safety by a scientific methodology. In order to evaluate the life safety, fire safety designers calculate the Required Safety Egress Time (RSET) which does not have the legal criteria regarding the standard method of calculation yet. So this way has been showing different results depending upon the designer's choice, knowledges and experiences. In this study, RSET calculation methods by six designers respectively were analysed from the thirteen reports of real performance based design projects conducted in Busan for a last five years. In particular, the Response Time calculation methods which have the most powerful effect for figuring the RSET are compared with the other designer's to deduce an error value.

This paper investigated pressure differentials in the elevator lobby depending on reference pressures of the pressurizing damper using FDS fire modeling. The results showed the temperatures and pressures in the contained fire room with small leak gaps can increase significantly. Setting reference pressure of the pressurizing dampers to 0 Pa can cause reduction of real pressure differentials and air velocity to resist smoke flow. This would cause smoke movement from fire room to elevator lobby which should be safe area for evacuation.

In this study, it was analyzed by a numerical analysis that plan/design considerations for ensuring the spectator safety of large arena audiences in a fire emergency evacuation plan. The latest issue, the 'performance-based design', fire and evacuation plan is important. But nowadays 'Specification-based design' is in common. In evacuation simulation, congestion of exit and aisle is ignored because only evacuation time of large-space is mainly analyzed. In smoke flow,'smoke filling effect' tends to be overrated. From now on, when design a field house, it is needed not 'smoke filling effect' and 'large-space evacuation' analysis, but analyzing 'whole building evacuation time' for ensuring fire evacuation safety of spectator.

As the industry develops, the size of buildings and ships are getting bigger and more complicated. In such a complex space, emergency evacuation systems are required because of the possibility of casualties when an accident situation occurs. However, because present systems are composed of basic devices, such as alarms, emergency exit signs, and announcement regarding the situation and inform only the least information to evacuees, evacuees are not able to judge objectively. To solve these problems, various evacuation algorithms have been proposed. However, these studies aim to search evacuation routes based on specific risk factors or to model the effects of bottlenecks in evacuation situations. Therefore, there is a limit to apply to real systems. Therefore, we propose algorithms to search the optimal evacuation route considering various risk factors such as fire and bottleneck in evacuation situations and to be applicable in actual situation in this paper. Performance evaluation using computer simulations showed that the proposed scheme is effective.
While the importance of barrier-free and fire evacuation design is highlighted in architectural design education, systemic analysis, and examination on such performances are still challenging due to methodological lacks. The present study investigates the effectiveness of BIM-based human behavior simulation for architecture major students' analytical examinations to promote barrier-free and fire evacuation performances. To achieve such an aim, quasi-experiments were conducted, which compare 50 students' analysis and examination scores according to the use and non-use of the simulation, and the data were collected via participants' survey and interview. As a result, T-Test and MANOVA analyses indicate that, compared with its non-use counterpart, the use of human behavior simulation better facilitates the students' (1) examination of the physical properties and dimensions for the disabled's accessibility and evacuation, (2) understanding of the bodily capacity and handicap of the disabled, (3) examination on the spatial layouts and locations of exits, (4) understanding on evacuees' urgent behaviors, and (5) responsibility as an architect. Based on previous studies, the reasons of statistical results are interpreted as the explicit observation and analytical measures of multiple numbers of virtual-evacuees and direct-experience from body range of the disabled responding to the populated occupants as what they face in authentic reality.
The high prediction performance of fire detector models is essentially needed to assure the reliability of fire and evacuation modeling in the process of PBD (Performance Based fire safety Design). The main objective of the present study is to measure input information in order to predict the accurate activation time of smoke detector into a Large Eddy Simulation (LES) fire model such as FDS (Fire Dynamics Simulator). To end this, FDE (Fire Detector Evaluator) which can measure the device properties of detector was developed, and the input information of Heskestad and Cleary's models was measured for a ionization smoke detector. In addition, the activation times of smoke detectors predicted using default values into FDS and measured values in the present study were systematically compared. As a result, the device properties of smoke detector examined in the present study showed a significant difference compared to the default values used into FDS, which resulted in the considerable difference of up to 15 minutes or more in terms of the activation time of smoke detector. The database (DB) on device properties of various smoke and heat detectors will be built to improve the reliability of PBD in future studies.
This paper investigated the fire and smoke behavior in the compounded multiplex theater using FDS with various spacial and boundary conditions to ensure the fire safety of the multiplex. The results showed that more rapid temperature increase and smoke can be induced near the exit door for the lower fire load duo to the horizontal smoke movement. The overuse of fire resistants can generate more smoke while delaying combustion rate, which can give adverse effect to the evacuation. The mal-function of the exhaust fan would obstruct smoke exhaust but also retard the function of sprinkler head.
