Construction era of Pungnabtoseong earthen wall is one of the most popular controversial issues in Korean archaeological research. For the evaluation of construction era, OSL dating was carried out using seven pottery pieces collected in each construction stage. From TL/OSL characteristics, and the results of absolute zeroing test and recovery test, it was proved that the pottery samples were completely bleached. The reliable paleodose was evaluated by using the SAR method with preheat at $220^{\circ}C$, and the pottery OSL age was determined from the ratio of paleodose to annual dose rate. Considering the resultant OSL ages, archaeological context and the related 14C ages, the first construction era was determined as $294{\pm}52$ yrs AD ($1{\sigma}$ SE). Also we found that the enlargement of construction stage III was $328{\pm}30$ yrs AD ($1{\sigma}$ SE) and final construction was finished within $400{\pm}76$ yrs AD ($1{\sigma}$ SE). Therefore, it is suggested that the construction of Pungnabtoseong earthen wall was firstly started in the late $3^{rd}$ century AD and several enlargements and repairs had been carried out, before the transfer of the capital of Baekje dynasty to Woongjin (Gongju) at 475 AD.

The vegetation of historical sites has been a form of vegetation that has remained since some years ago, but in modern times, vegetation and terrain have been deformed or damaged due to urban development, which was followed by an industrialization. As a solution to this, it is necessary to establish a plan for restoration and management by referring to the vegetation and landscape remaining in the historic site as indicators. This study was conducted to provide basic data for vegetation and landscape management of Baekje Historic Sites in Seoul by comparing and analyzing location characteristics, existing vegetation, and remaining vegetation of past substitutional vegetation for Pungnaptoseong and Mongchontoseong, Baekje Historic Sites in Seoul. As a result of the study, Pungnaptoseong and Mongchontoseong are located near the main stream of the Han River, Pungnaptoseong is located on a flat land consisting of natural embankments and floodplains, and Mongchontoseong is located on a hilly area. In the case of existing vegetation, it has been confirmed that Pungnaptoseong mainly has ornamental trees planting sites, while Mongchontoseong has a distribution of residual species from the past that grow in villages and hilly lowlands. The Substitutional vegetation of Pungnaptoseong and Mongchontoseong was synthesized based on the location characteristics and actual vegetation, it is estimated that the hilly areas may have been divided into "Quercus aliena Blume.", "Quercus mongolica Fisch. ex Ledeb." and so on, "Pinus densiflora Siebold & Zucc." on dry land,"Salix koreensis Andersson.", "Juglans mandshurica Maxim.", "Alnus japonica (Thunb.) Steud." in rivers and tributaries, "Quercus acutissima Carruth." in the main part of the forest, "Pinus densiflora Siebold & Zucc.", "Salix koreensis Andersson.", "Zelkova serrata (Thunb.) Makino." as a divine tree in the beginning of the village. Since the 1960s, all substitutional vegetation in the past has disappeared due to the introduction of foreign species and the creation of urban areas in Pungnaptoseong and Mongchontoseong, and the landscape has also been damaged. Fortunately, the substitutional vegetation was estimated in consideration of the species of residual trees distributed along the walls, climate, location characteristics, and times, but this study was conducted based on literature and existing vegetation surveys. Therefore, it is necessary to supplement the past target vegetation in Baekje historical sites in Seoul through quantitative experiments such as plant relic analysis in the future.
The purpose of this study was to analyze AMS radiocarbon dating, using wiggle match, of a charcoal column excavated from a fired dwelling site (ra-#8) at the Pungnaptoseong earthen wall made in Baekje era. The result of wiggle matching for 6 decadal single-ring samples of the charcoal produced ${\pm}2{\sigma}$ radiocarbon date (95.4% confidence interval) as A.D. 190~280. It indicated that the dwelling site (ra-#8) belonged to the early and middle of the 3rd century. Radiocarbon dating results confirmed the date speculated by archaeologists according to dwelling structure and pottery style.

The purpose of this study is to analysis chromaticity, granulometry, main chemical composition and mineral crystal structure of wall soils excavated from Poongnatoseong Earthen Castle using color reader, XRD, particla size analyzer. The analysed soils of Poongnatoseong Earthen Castle were yellowish brown and isabella. All samples were sands or sands including silty soil(SW~SC) and showed similar granulometry, chemical composition and mineral crystal structure, which were characteristics of construction materials suitable for modern road or airstrip. As resulting in comparison with 4 factors from chromaticity, granulometry, main chemical composition and mineral crystal structure, we decided that the control soils(PNS) near by Poongnatoseong Earthen Castle were not to be used for the castle wall construction We presumed that there was a huge soil distribution area for the wall construction around Poongnatoseong Earthen Castle. For further study, we will make a comparison analysis all kinds of soil characteristics. And then we can understand correctly about wall soils producing area, construction method, repair method and time of Poongnatoseong Earthen Castle.
The stamped earth method is a typical ancient engineering technique which consists of in-filling wooden frame with layers of stamped earth or sand. This method has been universally used to construct earthen walls and buildings, etc. The purpose of this article is to understand the construction method and principles of the stamped earthen wall through analysis of various construction techniques of Pungnaptoseong Fortress(Earthen Fortification in Pungnap-dong). First of all, the ground was leveled and the foundations for the construction of the earthen wall were laid. The underground foundation of the earthen walls was usually constructed by digging into the ground and then in-filling this space with layers of mud clay. Occasionally wooden posts or paving stones which may have been used to reinforce the soft ground were driven in. The method of adding layers of stamped earth at an oblique angle to either side of a central wall is the most characteristic feature of Pungnaptoseong Fortress. Even though the traces of fixing posts, boards, and the hardening of earth - all signatures of the stamped earth technique - have not been identified, evidence of a wooden frame has been found. It has also been observed that this section was constructed by including layers of mud clay and organic remains such as leaves and twigs in order to strengthen the adhesiveness of the structures. The outer part of the central wall was constructed by the anti-slope stamped earth technique to protect central wall. In addition a final layer of paved stones was added to the upper part of the wall. These stone layers and the stone wall were constructed in order to prevent the loss of the earthen wall and to discharge and drain water. Meanwhile, the technique of cementing with fire was used to control damp and remove water in stamped earth. It can not be said at present that the stamped earth method has been confirmed as the typical construction method of Korean ancient earthen walls. If we make a comparative study of the evidence of the stamped earth technique at Pungnaptoseong Fortress with other archeological sites, progress will be made in the investigation of the construction method and principles of stamped earthen wall.

Bronzes, Earthenwares and various artifacts were excavated from Pungnap earthen fortress in the early Baekje age in Korea. This study was performed in order to identify the manufacture technology of bronze artefacts and provenance of lead in bronzes. Microstructure and chemical composition results show that 3 of them are Cu-Sn-Pb alloys in which an intentional lead addition was carried out and one is tin bronze showing straight twin structure within crystal grains. Also $CuFeS_2$ or $Cu_5FeS_4$ was used as raw materials through the detection of S and Fe as trace elements. The lead isotope results could be matched with one of the zones of southern Korea and China on the East Asian map. This results shows that data were plotted either in zone 2 or zone 3 of the South Korean galena map. However, one of bronze artifacts was matched with the zone of Northern China.
This paper presents a new information on animal husbandry practice in the Baekje period using stable isotope analysis of 17 animal bones excavated from the Pungnaptoseong Fortress. Stable carbon isotope evidence implies that wild animals such as deer and pigs had mainly $C_3$-based diet whereas domestic cattle and horses might have consumed more $C_4$ plants. In addition, we propose one potential that domestic pigs show higher nitrogen isotope values in comparison with wild boar because they were possibly fed by humans.

Pung-nap mudcastle has brought wide attention to archaeologists since scientific studies were carried out on the various types of building sites and excavated potteries related to A period of Baekje Kindom when it sat Hansung as the capital. It is identified that clay from Ra-No.19 site of Pung-Nap mudcastle has different from compositions that of residential soil. From archaeological point of view, it is believed that the the soil was a source material for potteries due to the appropriate viscosity and inclusions. Mineralogical and geochemical studies show that the compositions between the source material and randomly chosen two potteries from the same site are similar. Behavior pattern classification of major, trace and rare elements provides also very similar result. Artificial specimen has been made at different temperature in order to estimate firing temperature of the potteries by means of various kinds of instrumental application. As a result of the study, it is believed that the firing temperature of the red and brown pottery was $550{\sim}600^{\circ}C$ and $900{\sim}1,000^{\circ}C$ respectively.
In this article, I have summarized and reviewed the concepts and terms surrounding the stamped construction technique, focusing on earthen walls in the Three Kingdoms period. This is because confusion is caused by defining the nature of the earthen walls by using various concepts and terms for each researcher regarding the substance and construction method of the earthen walls. The stamped earth method is a representative ancient civil engineering or construction technique in which a frame is made of plates to form a fortress wall, a fence, and the base of a building, and then soil or sand is poured into it layer by layer and then stamped with a bat to make it solid. Therefore, in order to prove that the earthen wall was built by the stamped earth method, evidence such as a narrow plate, a column for fixing it, long horizontal and vertical wood pieces to support the narrow plate, and traces of pounding the soil must be detected. However, in Korea, there are very few cases where such evidence has been fully excavated, so it is necessary to agree on how strictly the standards for the stamped earth method will be applied. The terms related to the stamped technique mobilized for the construction of the earthen walls were explained with actual examples by dividing the terms related to the concept into terms related to the principle and unit of the stamped plate, and the specific stamped technology. In particular, in Pungnabtoseong Earthen wall, a variety of typical and diverse methods of building the ancient stamped earthen wall were identified so that decisive data could be secured to understand the principles and techniques of the stamped earthen wall. In the future, a more general understanding of the stamped technique will be possible only when more evidence related to it is found in relics other than Pungnabtoseong Earthen wall.

This study aimed at the identification of the black coating materials on the pottery surface and manufacturing technique of black burnished pottery excavated from the Pungnaptoseong, Seoul, which is estimated to be royal fortress of Beakje. According to observation of black coated surface and raw materials, potteries can be divided into two groups. The first group potteries have black inner and black surface with well-selected particles. Second group potteries are black in surface only with unevenly selected particles. Each group seems to represent different manufacturing technique in clay selection, color development timing and method. The black burnished pottery contains high values of CaO, $P_2O_5$, L.O.I. and lower content of $Fe_2O_3$ compared with gray pottery excavated from the same site, which indicates plant ashes were used for coloring the surface of pottery in black. According to the result of SEM-EDS mapping of black burnished pottery, carbon was concentrated on pottery surface, while iron was concentrated on the surface of the gray pottery. Based on XRD analysis, firing temperature of the black burnished potteries were fired low temperature range at 700 to $900^{\circ}C$, and that of the gray potteries ranged from $900^{\circ}C$ to $1000^{\circ}C$.
