This paper investigated acoustic emission (AE) characteristics in association with various fracture processes of glass fiber reinforced plastic skin/ aluminum honeycomb core (GF-AH) hybrid composites under compressive and bending loads. Various failure modes such as skin layer fracture, skin/core interfacial fracture, and local plastic yield buckling and cell wall adhesive fracture occurring in the honeycomb cell wall were classified through the fracture identification in association with the AE frequency and amplitude analysis. The distribution of the event-rate in which it has a high amplitude showed a procedure of cell wall adhesive fracture, skin/core interfacial debonding and fiber breakage, whereas distribution of different peak frequencies indicated the plastic deformation of aluminum cell wall and the friction between honeycomb walls. Consequently, the fracture behaviors of GF-AH hybrid composites could be characterized through a nondestructive evaluation employing the AE technique.

In this study, the distribution of lectin receptors in Paragonimus westermani tissue was explored using colloidal gold label complexed with lectin WGA purified from wheat germ (Triticum vulgare). The lectin WGA gold complex, shown to recognize GlcNAc (N-acetylgalactosamine) and NeuNAc (N-acetylneuraminic acid) regions, was applied to detect binding sites in Lowicryl HM 20 sections viewed under electron microscope. Labeled sections of the metacercaria revealed gold particles specifically distributed on the tegumental syncytium and lamella of the excretory canal. Labeling of young adult tissue was then quantified and compared to that of adult worm tissue. Adult worm tissue sections resulted in specific gold particle distribution on the lamella of caecal epithelium and excretory canal. These results indicate that lectin WGA receptors are located in the tegumental syncytium and lamella of the excretory canal of the metacercariae, and in the lamella of the caecum and excretory canal of the young adult and adult. Therefore, the GlcNAc and NeuNAc regions in the tegumental syncytium appear to be functionally associated with cell-recognition and protection from the immune system of the host, and linked with membrane transport and absorption of nutrients in the lamella of the excretaory canal and caecal epithelia.

This study was carried out to find out the optimum hardening condition for ginseng plantlets redifferentiated by tissue culture method. While a lot of root hair were observed on the root of seedling grown on the soil, few root hair were observed on the root of plantlet redifferentiated in vitro. On the medium solidified with $0.1{\%}$ phytagel, root hair was not observed and root weight, root width and laternal root development were also very poor. While raising the phytagel concentration on the media, root hair began to increase and root weight, root width and latemal root development were improved. Vascular tissue of plantlet grown on the medium with $0.1{\%}$ phytagel was very poor, but that of plantlet grown on the medium with $0.8{\%}$ phytagel was very good.

The honeycomb composite joint structure designed for application to a tilting KTX railroad car body is subjected to bending loads of a cantilever type. Honeycomb sandwich composite panel-joint attached in the real tilting car body was fabricated and sectioned as several beam-joint specimens for the bending test. The fracture behaviors of these specimens under static loads were different from those under cyclic loads. Static bending loads caused shear deformation and fracture in the honeycomb core region, while fatigue cyclic bend loading caused delamination along the interface between the composite skin and the honeycomb core, and/or caused a fracture in the welded part jointed with the steel under-frame. These fracture behaviors could occur in other industrial honeycomb composite joints with similar sub-structures, and be used for improving design parameters of a honeycomb composite joint structure.

The aim of this study was to investigate of total ash, acid-insoluble ash and heavy metals content contained in commercial herbal medicines classified by parts used. A total of 1504 samples (84 species) purchased from markets in Seoul, are classified by five kinds of plant parts. The mean of total ash and acidinsoluble ash content (%) were as follows; Herba 9.0, 1.1, Caulis and cortex 6.1, 1.0, Flos fructus and semen 5.1, 0.8, Radix 4.6, 0.7 and Rhizoma 4.3, 0.4. The total amount of individual heavy metals content (mg/kg) (Pb, As, Cd and Hg) was high in Herba 1.13 and decreased in the order of Caulis and cortex 1.07, Rhizoma 0.91 and Radix 0.91, and was low in Flos fructus and semen 0.73. In addition, acid-insoluble ash contents was correlated with the total amount of individual heavy metals (r=0.314) (p<0.01).
Microstructural morphology and bending strengths of moulded composites of thermotropic liquid crystalline polymer(LCP) and polyamide 6 (PA6) have been studied as a function of epoxy fraction. Injection-moulding of a composite plaque at a temperature below the melting point of the LCP fibrils generated a multi-layered structure: the surface skin layer with thickness of $65\;-\;120{\mu\textrm{m}}$ exhibiting a transverse orientation; the sub-skin layer with an orientation in the flow direction; the core layer with arc-curved flow patterns. The plaques containing epoxy 4.8vol% exhibited superior bending strength and large fracture strain. With an increase of epoxy fraction equal to and beyond 4.8vol%, geometry of LCP domains was changed from fibrillar shape to lamella-like one, which caused a shear-mode fracture. An analysis of the bending strength of the composite plaques by using a symmetric layered model beam suggested that addition of epoxy component altered not only the microstructural geometry but also the elastic moduli and strengths of the respective layers.
We studied any variations of skin mucus cells of Misgurnus mizolepis caused by inducing a great change of water temperature including high temperature- and low temperature-adapted groups and then compared them with a control group of normal water condition. The high temperature-adapted group showed no significant different in size and number of the mucus cell (P>0.01), whereas in the low temperature-adapted group, the surface area of mucus cell layer and shape of its mucus cell, and the number of mucus cell remarkably increased in all the skin regions of dorsum, lateral region and occiput (P<0.01). Returned to the same condition as the control group, the low temperature-adapted groups showed the same features that appear in the normal water condition (P<0.01). Based on these results, the skin mucus cells of M. mizolepis seems to be very sensitive to cold water temperature and therefore they may play a key role in assessment of its environmental conditions.
Using a methylotrophic yeast Hansenula polymorpha, a heterologous gene expression and secretion system was developed for the production of hEGF(human Epidermal Growth Factor) which has been shown to promote epithelial cell proliferation and to inhibit gastric acid secretion. The hEGF gene was chemically synthesized according to the preferred codon usage in H. polymor- pha and expressed under the control of the strong and inducible methanol oxidase(MOX) promoter. The mating factor $\alpha$ pre-pro leader sequence of Saccharomyces cerevisiae was employed for hEGF to be secreted into the extracellular medium. This expression cassette was stably integrated into the host chromosomal DNA. Mature hEGF was efficiently expressed and secreted into the extracel- lular medium. About 24 mg/l of hEGF was detected in the cuture supernatant of a transformant with pA-EGF3 under the suboptimal culture conditions.
