  • This paper improves Sherman's two-pulse method for angle estimation of two unresolved targets in phase comparison monopulse radar. The proposed method provides the angle information with only a single-pulse measurement instead of two pulses. The proposed method can estimate a single-target angle by single-target indicator, in contrast with previous techniques. The accuracy of angle estimation for proposed method is demonstrated by simulations.

  • Hitherto, spatial resolution has commonly been evaluated by test patterns or phantoms built on some specific distances (from close to far) between two objects (or double targets). This evaluation method's shortcoming is that resolution is restricted to target distances of phantoms made for test. Therefore, in order to solve the problem, this study proposes and verifies a new method to efficiently test spatial resolution with a single target. For the research I used PSF and JND to propose an idea to measure spatial resolution. After that, I made experiments by commonly used phantoms to verify my new evaluation hypothesis inferred from the above method. To analyse the hypothesis, I used LabVIEW program and got a line pixel from digital image. The result was identical to my spatial-resolution hypothesis inferred from a single target. The findings of the experiment proves only a single target can be enough to relatively evaluate spatial resolution on a digital image. In other words, the limit of the traditional spatial-resolution evaluation method, based on double targets, can be overcome by my new evaluation one using a single target.

  • The angle-tracking of maneuvering targets is required to the state estimation and classification of targets in underwater acoustic systems. The Problem of angle-tracking multiple closed and crossing targets has been studied by various authors. Sword et al. Proposed a multiple target an91e-tracking algorithm using angular innovations of the targets during a sampling Period are estimated in the least square sense using the most recent estimate of the sensor output covariance matrix. This algorithm has attractive features of simple structure and avoidance of data association problem. Ryu et al. recently Proposed an effective multiple target angle-tracking algorithm which can obtain the angular innovations of the targets from a signal subspace instead of the sensor output covariance matrix. Hwang et al. improved the computational performance of a multiple target angle-tracking algorithm based on the fact that the steering vector and the noise subspace are orthogonal. These algorithms. however. are ineffective when a subset of the incident sources are coherent. In this Paper, we proposed a new multiple target angle-tracking algorithm for coherent and incoherent sources. The proposed algorithm uses the relationship between source steering vectors and the signal eigenvectors which are multiplied noise covariance matrix. The computer simulation results demonstrate the improved Performance of the Proposed algorithm.

  • It is useful to detect the tracking error with an optimal view in the presence of measurement origin uncertainty. In this paper, after the investigation of the targer error dependent on the detection threshold as well as the detection and false alarm probabilities in a clutter environment, a new algorothm that optimizes the threshold of validation region for target trackinf is proposed. The performance of the algorithm is demonstrated through computer simulations.

  • Recently, Lee et al. have proposed an algorithm utilizing the signals from different paths by using bottom mounted simple linear array to estimate 3-D location of oceanic target. But this algorithm assumes that sound velocity is constant along depth of sea. Consequently, serious performance loss is appeared in real oceanic environment that sound speed is changed variously. In this paper, we present a 3-D near field localization algorithm for inhomogeneous sound speed. The proposed algorithm adopt localization function that utilize ray propagation model for multipath environment with linear sound speed profile(SSP), after that, the proposed algorithm searches for the instantaneous azimuth angle, range and depth from the localization cost function. Several simulations using linear SSP and non linear SSP similar to that of real oceans are used to demonstrate the performance of the proposed algorithm. The estimation error in range and depth is decreased by 100m and 50m respectively.

  • Generally, the propeller shaft rate (PSR) estimation algorithm for the classification of the sonar target has the following problems: it requires both accurate and efficient the fundamental finding method because it is essential and difficult to distinguish harmonic family from the frequency spectrum, and further, it requires an easy design procedure in terms of its structures and parameters. To solve these problems, an evolutionary PSR estimation algorithm using an expert knowledge and the evolution strategy, is proposed. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm effectively solves the problems in the realtime system application.

  • As one measure of image interpretability, NIIRS(National Imagery Interpretability Rating Scale) has been used. Unlike MTF(Modulation Transfer Function), SNR(Signal to Noise Ratio), and GSD(Ground Sampling Distance), NIIRS can describe the quality of overall image at user's perspective. NIIRS is observed with human observation directly or estimated by edge analysis. For edge analysis specially manufactured artificial target is used commonly. This target, formed with a tarp of black and white patterns, is deployed on the ground and imaged by the satellite. Due to this, the artificial target-based method needs a big expense and can not be performed often. In this paper, we propose a new edge analysis method that enables to estimate NIIRS accurately. In this method, natural targets available in the image are used and characteristics of the target are considered. For assessment of the algorithm, various experiments were carried out. The results showed that our algorithm can be used as an alternative to the artificial target-based method.

  • In this paper, we present a method for estimating the ratio of CPA distance to velocity of underwater target using target bearing information in CPA situation. This ratio can be estimated by previous research which is Envelope CPA using proximity sensor but it has low performance if the target is close to receiver sensor or bigger interference caused by multi-path effects. Therefore we propose a Bearing CPA technique using a target bearing information as a way to overcome.

  • Maneuvering targets are difficult for the Kalman filter to track since the target model of tracking filter might not fit the real target trajectory and the statistical characteristics of the target maneuver are unknown in advance. In order to track such a wildly maneuvering target, several schemes had been proposed and improved the tracking performance in some extent. In this paper a Kalman filter-based scheme is proposed for maneuvering target tracking. The proposed scheme estimates the target acceleration input vector directly from the feature of maneuvering target trajectories and updates the simple Kalman tracker by use of the acceleration estimates. Simulation results for various target profiles are analyzed for a comparison of the performances of our proposed scheme with that of conventional trackers.
