  • The dynamic behavior of a small wind-turbine blade was analyzed experimentally. Arrays of fiber Bragg-Grating (FBG) sensors attached along the blade were used to measure the strains of the blade surface. An impact test was performed to estimate the resonance frequencies of the fundamental and higher modes of the cantilever blade system developed for this study. The results were similar to the results for conventional strain gages. However, FBG sensors could sense modes that strain gauges could not sense. The strains obtained from the FBG sensor array were used to estimate displacement-mode shapes of the blade.

  • Steel structures have a higher probability of being damaged by fatigue than by other causes of deterioration. As such, their maintenance to prevent fatigue damage is essential to sustain their safety and performance during their service period. In their maintenance, the current state of their fatigue cracks must be assessed to determine appropriate reinforcement methods and the suitable time intervals of periodic inspections when fatigue cracks are detected. Determining the crack growth rate is a successful method of predicting fractures, but it requires technical knowledge on fracture mechanics and experience in numerical methods and software for finite element analysis. In this study, a fatigue crack growth test on through-thickness cracked steel plates was conducted to assess the crack growth rate without superior technical knowledge and experience. The relationship between the Crack Opening Displacement (COD) and the crack growth rate was found in relatively long fatigue cracks.

  • This paper presents a time-domain Gauss-Newton full-waveform inversion method for the material profile reconstruction in heterogeneous semi-infinite solid media. To implement the inverse problem in a finite computational domain, perfectly-matchedlayers( PMLs) are introduced as wave-absorbing boundaries within which the domain's wave velocity profile is to be reconstructed. The inverse problem is formulated in a partial-differential-equations(PDE)-constrained optimization framework, where a least-squares misfit between measured and calculated surface responses is minimized under the constraint of PML-endowed wave equations. A Gauss-Newton-Krylov optimization algorithm is utilized to iteratively update the unknown wave velocity profile with the aid of a specialized regularization scheme. Through a series of one-dimensional examples, the solution of the Gauss-Newton inversion was close enough to the target profile, and showed superior convergence behavior with reduced wall-clock time of implementation compared to a conventional inversion using Fletcher-Reeves optimization algorithm.

  • This paper introduces a mesh continuation scheme for a one-dimensional inverse medium problem to reconstruct the spatial distribution of elastic wave velocities in heterogeneous semi-infinite solid domains. To formulate the inverse problem, perfectly-matched-layers(PMLs) are introduced as wave-absorbing boundaries that surround the finite computational domain truncated from the originally semi-infinite extent. To tackle the inverse problem in the PML-truncated domain, a partial-differential-equations(PDE)-constrained optimization approach is utilized, where a least-squares misfit between calculated and measured surface responses is minimized under the constraint of PML-endowed wave equations. The optimization problem iteratively solves for the unknown wave velocities with their updates calculated by Fletcher-Reeves conjugate gradient algorithms. The optimization is performed using a mesh continuation scheme through which the wave velocity profile is reconstructed in successively denser mesh conditions. Numerical results showed the robust performance of the mesh continuation scheme in reconstructing target wave velocity profile in a layered heterogeneous solid domain.

  • In this study, quantitative sensitivity analysis on rockfill material influencing the dam crest displacement of Concrete-Faced Rockfill Dam(CFRD) was carried out. The purpose of this study is to indicate the most important input parameter and to show the quantitative variation of displacement at the crest of CFR type dam with this input parameter. The rockfill material properties for parametric study were obtained from the results of large scale triaxial tests on 34 rockfill materials in the 22 different sites. From the statistical analysis on these data, some statistical characteristics of rockfill material properties such as property range, distribution characteristics, and correlation between the properties were investigated. based on these characteristics, 27 property combinations were constituted by Latin Hypercube sampling method. Dam crest displacements after construction, impounding, and earthquake loading were evaluated by static and dynamic numerical analysis on each combination. From the sensitivity analysis, it was found that the crest displacement of CFR type dam was absolutely affected by the shear modulus of rockfill material and the effect of friction angle of it was negligible. This relative difference of sensitivity was more outstanding in case of crest settlement than in case of crest horizontal displacement. Also, it was found that the settlement and horizontal displacement of dam crest logarithmically decreased as the shear modulus increased and the difference between the maximum value and the minimum vale amounted to about 9.5 times in case of settlement and about 10 times in case of horizontal displacement.

  • In this paper, the structural design for composite blade was performed and full scale structural test was conducted to verify the structural design and integrity of composite blade. Firstly, FE analysis was performed using commercial software ABAQUS under conditions of rated wind speed and Case H in IEC 61400-2. Lay-up sequence and ply thickness were designed based on FE results. And to verify the structural design, full scale structural test was conducted according to IEC 61400-2 under identical loading conditions of FE analysis. Finally, the force-deflection and local strain behavior of composite blade were evaluated.

  • In this study, the finite element analysis was carried out to investigate dynamic characteristics of the AGF(Active Gurney Flap) which is under development for reducing vibration and noise of the helicopter rotor system. The Gurney flap is a kind of small flat plate, mounted normal to the lower surface of the airfoil near to the trailing edge. An electric motor, L-shaped linkages and flap parts were integrated into a rotor bade, and 3~5/rev control was given to the AGF to reduce the vibration in the fixed frame. Thus, an explicit time integration method was adopted to investigate the dynamic response of the AGF with considering both centrifugal force due to the rotor rotation and active control input, and it can be seen that the vertical displacement of the AGF was satisfied to meet the design requirement.

  • This paper presents a novel surface acoustic wave (SAW)-based pressure sensor, which is composed of single phase unidirectional transducer (SPUDT), three reflectors, and a deep etched substrate for bonding underneath the diaphragm. Using the coupling of modes (COM) theory, the SAW device was simulated, and the optimized design parameters were extracted. Finite Element Methods (FEM) was utilized to calculate the bending and stress/strain distribution on the diaphragm under a given pressure. Using extracted optimal design parameters, a 440 MHz reflective delay line on 41o YX LiNbO3 was developed. High S/N ratio, shan reflection peaks, and small spurious peaks were observed. The measured S11 results showed a good agreement with simulated results obtained from coupling-of-modes (COM) modeling and Finite Element Method (FEM) analysis.

  • We propose a novel $4{\times}4$ Hadamard matrix feed network for a $4{\times}1$ array antenna to form a dual beam. If each element of the array is excited following the elements in a row of the Hadamard matrix, a two-lobed antenna beam can be obtained. The angle between the two lobes can be controlled. The Hadamard matrix feed network consists of four $90^{\circ}$ hybrids, a crossover and four $90^{\circ}$ phase shifters. The array, including the Hadamard matrix feed network, was fabricated on a microstip structure. The measured beam directions of the two lobes are $0^{\circ}$, ${\pm}15^{\circ}$, ${\pm}33^{\circ}$, ${\pm}45^{\circ}$ depending on the choice of the input port of the feed network.

  • The fatigue crack growth model is derived and the retardation model is proposed. The fatigue crack growth model considers the residual plastic stretch on the crack surface which results from the plastic deformation at the tip of fatigue crack. The fatigue crack growth rate is calculated by using the cumulative fatigue damage and plastic strain energy in the material elements at the crack tip. This model gives the crack growth rate in reasonable agreement with test data for aluminum alloy AL6061-T651 and 17-4PH casting steel. The fatigue crack growth retardation model is based on the residual plastic stretch produced from a tensile overload which reduced the plastic strain range of the following load cycles. A strip-yield model of a crack tip plasticity is used for the calculation of a plastic zone size. The proposed retardation model characterized the observed features and delayed retardation of the fatigue crack growth under tensile overload.
