Poly(vinyl alcohol) Nanocomposite Films (II): Thermo-mechanical Properties and Morphology (폴리(비닐 알코올) 나노복합체 필름(II) : 열적-기계적 성질 및 모폴로지)

  • Blends of poly(acrylic acid- co-maleic acid) (PAM) with poly (vinyl alcohol) (PVA) were pre -pared in distilled water PVA/PAM/saponite (PVA/PAM/SPT) nanocomposite films were prepared with various clay contents by using the solution intercalation method. The variations of the dispersion, morphology, and thermo-mechanical properties of the nanocomposites with clay content in the range 0 to 9 wt% were examined. Up to 3 wt% clay loading, the clay particles were homogeneously dispersed in the PVA/PAM blends. However, some agglomerated structures form in the polymer matrix above a clay content of 7 wt%. The thermal stability of the hybrids was increased linearly with increasing the clay loading up to 9 wt%. The maximum strength and modulus were obtained at a clay content of 7 wt%. Thus, the addition of small amounts of clay to the PVA/PAM blends produced PVA/PAM nano-composites with improved the thermo-mechanical properties.

  • 소수성인 폴리올레핀계를 친수성화하여 고분자의 표면특성을 개량하거나 고분자 재료 표면에 새로운 기능을 부여하고자 하는 연구가 1970년대부터 계속되고 있다. 이러한 고분자의 표면 특성개질에 대한 연구는 보통 고분자의 도장성, 인쇄성, 접착성, 젖음성 들을 개선하기 위한 것이다. 그 중 재료의 표면층 만을 효율적으로 개질 시키는 저온 플라즈마 처리법은 낮은 기압에서 행하는 글로우 방전법과 대기압 부근에서 행하는 코로나 방전법으로 나눌 수 있으며, 특히 대기압하에서 코로나 방전을 이용한 표면개질법은 산업현장에서 연속적이면서 고속으로 처리할 수 있고 취급이 용이하다는 장점 때문에 표면개질에 있어서 현재 널리 사용되고 있는 방법중 하나이다[1]. Preparation and Characterization of Acrylic Acid Grafted Polypropylene Nonwoven Fabric (아크릴산 그라프트 폴리프로필렌 부직포의 제조와 특성)

  • The purpose of this study is in development of effective filter-type polymer adsorbent for removal of pollutants from wastewater by UV irradiation graft polymerization. Photografting of acrylic acid (AA) on polypropylene (PP) nonwoven fabric using benzophenone (BP) as a photosensitizer was investigated. Inhibition of homopolymerization was achieved by adding various concentrations of $FeSO_4{\cdot}7H_2O$, $CuSO_4{\cdot}5H_2O$ and Mohr's salt. As AA concentration was increased, the degree of grafting was increased as to a specific value and then decreased, and the effect of BP concentration showed the same tendency. It was also found that the degree of grafting increased with reaction time and reaction temperature. Addition of the polyfunctional monomers and $H_2SO_4$ to the grafting system accelerated the photografting. The melting temperature, molecular weight and breaking stress and breaking strain were decreased with the increase in the degree of grafting.

  • The coating material for the ink-jet printing paper tends to be waterbase as the waterbase ink-jet ink is used more widely. Waterbase coating material consists of alumina sol as a pigment, poly(vinyl alcohol) as a main binder and polymeric additive for improving properties. In this study, polymeric auditive was synthesized by combining one or toto monomers among methacrylic acid, acrylic acid and acrylamide to the basic monomers, styrene and n-butylacrylate. The properties of printability such as ink absorption, ink spreading, and optical density, glossiness and water resistance were investigated by changing the kinds of surfactants, the composition of monomers and the structure of polymer particles. Results showed that materials containing anionic surfactant and/or acrylic acid had problems in com-patibility with alumina sol. Also, coating materials containing acrylamide had good printability and lout glossiness while those containing methacrylic acid did not have good printability and high glossiness.

Pervaporation Separation of Ethanol-Water Mixtures Using Nylon 4 and Its Blended Membranes (나일론 4와 이의 블렌드 막을 이용한 에탄올-물 혼합물의 투과 증발분리)

  • The application of the pervaporation process in biotechnology is rapidly growing. A two stage pervaporation process can be applied to the downstream processing of ethanol fermentation. In this paper, the second stage process in which the water-ethanol composition was 50:50 wt.% was investigated in more detail by using Nylon 4 and its blended membranes containing poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) and poly(acrylic acid) (PAA). Nylon 4 membranes were tested for compositions at 25, 30, and $35^{\circ}C$. Nylon 4 membranes had a separation factor of 4.18 with a permeability of $0.69kg/m^2hr$ at water-ethanol composition of 50:50 wt.%, while nylon 4-PVA blended membranes crosslinked by 5 Mrad gamma-ray irradiation showed a higher separation factor of 10.56 with permeability $0.55kg/m^2hr$ at the same composition. Nylon 4 also showed a high separation factor 27.8 at the ethanol-water azeotropic composition among the homopolymer membranes.

  • Acrylic acid was graft-copolymerized on polyethylene film in the presence of additives such as acid and $FeSO_4(NH_4)_2SO_4{\cdot}6H_2O$ using peroxide grafting technique by ${\gamma}$-ray and electron beam, and the effect of $FeSO_4(NH_4)_2SO_4{\cdot}6H_2O$ and acid on the grafting yield was evaluated. The grafting mechanism and the physical property of grafted films were also examined. The results showed that the inclusion of $FeSO_4(NH_4)_2SO_4{\cdot}6H_2O$ in acidified acrylic acid grafting solution was extremely beneficial and led to a most unusual enhancement effect in the radiation grafting. In the other hand, inclusion of mineral acid in the grafting solution in the absence of $FeSO_4(NH_4)_2SO_4{\cdot}6H_2O$ could not lead to he suitable grafting reaction by the severe homopolymerization of acrylic acid. The addition of $H_2SO_4$, and HCl led to much higher grafting yield than $HNO_3$and $CH_3COOH$. It was shown that grafting yield of ${\gamma}$-ray irradiated-polyethylene was higher than that of electron beam irradiated polyethylene.

The Study of Water Resistance and Water/Oxygen Barrier Properties of Poly(vinyl alcohol)/Water-soluble Poly(ethylene-co-acrylic acid) Blend Films (폴리비닐알콜/수분산 에틸렌-아크릴산 공중합체 블렌딩 필름의 내수성 및 수분/산소 차단성 연구)

  • Blending films having enhanced water-resistance and barrier properties were prepared using the mixtures of poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) aqueous solution and poly(ethylene-co-acrylic acid) (EAA) dispersed in water. Thermal-mechanical properties, contact angles, water-vapor transmission rates (WVTR) and oxygen transmission rates $(O_2TR)$ were measured with the content of EAA of blending films, and their water-resistance was evaluated. The tensile strength of the films was found to be $9.16{\sim}11.75\;kg/mm^2$ which showed no significant difference compared with that of PVA, and the hardness increased with the content of EAA. The glass transition temperature and melting temperature of the blending films were slightly improved. The film prepared with PVA/EAA (= 90/10), of which the swelling and solubility were measured to be 109 and 0%, respectively, showed improved water-resistance. The WVTR and $O_2TR$ for the PET film (thickness $50\;{\mu}m$) coated with PVA/EAA (= 90/10) film (thickness $2.5\;{\mu}m$) were measured to be $9.1\;g/m^2/day$ and $2.0\;cc/m^2/day$, respectively.

Fabrication of a Film Coated with Conducting Polymer Using One Atmospheric Pressure Plasma (대기압 플라즈마를 이용한 전도성 고분자 코팅 필름 제조)

  • A composite film of polyurethane(PU)-graft-poly(acrylic acid) (PAAc)/polyaniline (PU-g-AAc/PANI) was successfully fabricated for the purpose of adding conductivity on the surface of a general purpose polymer and improving adhesive property between the general purpose polymer and conducting polymer layer. The results from ATR-FTIR and XPS analyses also supported the successful synthesis of the composite film by showing characteristic peaks for every step. A low surface resistivity of $2{\times}10^3\;ohm/sq$ proved the surface conductivity of synthesized PU-g-AAc/PANI film and the surface resistance decreased with increasing the amount of grafted AAc, which acted as a dopant for PANI film.

Sintering Behavior and Mechanical Strength of Hydroxyapatite/Polyacrylic Acid Homogeneous Composite (Hydroxyapatite/Polyacrylic Acid 균질복합체의 소결 특성 및 기계적 강도)

  • Hydroxyapatite (HAp)/Polyacrylic Acid(PAA) homogeneous composites of four different composition ratio were preparation by co-precipitation process with synthetic HAp and PAA as a binder. HAP/PAA composites were molding by cold isostatic pressing and were sintering by various condition in air. Crystallinity and structure of sintered HAp/PAA composites were investigated by XRD and FT-IR. Also, the compressive strength and the fracture surface of sintered specimens were measured by UTM and SEM. HAp/PAA composites were showed phase transformation of partially ${\alpha}$, ${\beta}$-tricalcium phosphate at sintering condition of 1200$^{\circ}C$ and 3 h. The pore size and porosity of sintered body were showed the range of 0.2∼3.0 $\mu\textrm{m}$ and 0.49∼13.43%, respectively. The compressive strength of sintered specimens were appeared the range of 36.6∼58.2 MPa. From these results, the sintered HAp/PAA comosites can be accounted for the microporous HAp having a good compressive strength due to homogeneous pore morphology.

A Study on the Fluidity Retention of Cement Paste Added by Naphthalene Sulfonated Condensate and Polycarboxylic Acid Admixture (나프탈렌술폰산축합물과 폴리카르본산계 혼화제가 첨가된 시멘트 페이스트의 유동성 유지에 관한 연구)

  • Naphthalene sulfonated condensate has been widely used as a superplasticizer for cement and concrete, but the application was limited due to its large slump loss with elapsed time. To complement this demerit of NSF, polycarboxylic acid copolymer from nlaleic anhydride and acryl~c acid(MA) was synthesized to retain the mobility of cement and concrete, and then mixed with NSF. The physical properties, such as fluidity, fluidityretention and rheology, were measured by applying these admixtures to cement paste as a function of elapsed time. And also compressive strength of mortar was measured with curing time. NIv-l and NM-2 containing 10, 20 wt% of MA respectively had a excellent fluidity and a fluidity- retention. In rheological property, the increases of shear stress and viscosity with elapsed time were delayed with the increasing of shear rate in cornparision with NSF only. The marked slump loss of cement paste could be controlled by these admixture. Also the added ainount of admixture and the ratio of water to cement affected these properties.
