  • The design standards, such as AISC-LRFD (2005) and KBC-2005, specify the maximum width-to-thickness ratio that can be used for computing the strength of the concrete-filled tube (CFT), and do not include any formula for computing the strength when the width-to-thickness ratio is over the limit. This paper proposes a strength equation for CFTs with a large width-to-thickness ratio by acknowledging the fact that the stiffened slender steel platehas substantial postbuckling strength, and that it therefore can be more economical to use it. The equation adopts the concept of effective width, which is very useful for plate analysis. By comparing the strengths of AISC2005, KBC2005, and the proposed method with the results of the experiment, where the width-to-thickness ratio was regarded as the main parameter, the applicability of the proposed method was verified.

  • This study involves the development of a computer program to analyze the local buckling stresses for the flange and the web of I-beams under compression at elevated temperatures, and the optimization algorithm to analyze the optimum width-thickness ratios which does not occur their local buckling prior to yield failure. The high-temperature stress-strain relationships of steel used in this study were based on EC3 (Eurocode3) Part1.2 (2000b). In this study, the local buckling stresses and the optimum width-thichness ratios were analyzed considering the influences of the yield stress, local buckling coefficients and width-thickness ratios of the flange and the web. Design examples show the applicability of the computer program developed in this study.

  • The concrete-filled steel tube (CFT) that has an excellent performance can be more economically used when the steel tube has a large width-to-thickness ratio. However, the international provisions such as American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC) limit the use of a slender plate in CFT members, resulting in a less optimal use of CFT. This study verifies the post buckling strength of CFT columns through the experimental program for Hollow Steel Sections (HSS) and CFTs with a with-to-thickness ratio ranged 60 to 100. The study also proposes a relaxed limitations of with-to-thickness ratio compared to the one specified in the current standards.

  • This paper presents are monotonic and cyclic behavior of steel plates. The effects of design parameters, initial deflection and aspect ratio, width-thickness ratio are studied by using FEM analysis. The results obtained from the monotonic loadings show that the aspect ratio(a/b) on the strength is to be neglected in the range of $(a/b){\leq}1.0$. The major cause of the reduction in strength sbbjected to cyclic loadings are width-thickness ratio and displacement amplitude. Based on the results, this paper presents some new strength curve with considering the cyclic deteriorations. The results are also discussed about the deformation capacity accordance with the width-thickness ratio and displacement amplitude.

  • This paper presents the basic data for the strength behavior of longitudinally profiled plates(LP plate). The effects of loading conditions, thickness and slenderness ratio of plates are examined by using FEM analysis. The analysis results shown that the strength behavior of LP plate is varied with the loading conditions. The major causes of the reduction in strength are the distribution of deflection and the slenderness ratio of plate. Based on the results, this paper presents some discussions about the strength evaluation of LP plate with considering the equivalent thickness.

  • This study evaluate the characteristics of stainless steel for the use of stainless steel tubes as structural members. The strength of stainless steel tube was compared with that of steel tube stub-columns through tensile experiment and compressed experiment. The selected experimental parameters were diameter (width)-thickness and section shape. The results of tests showed that stainless steel tubes could be predicted as superior to steel tubes in terms of tensile strength, yield ratio, elongation percentage, and absorption ability of energy. The yield strength of stainless steel tubes were found to be higher than the Korean Standards ($Fy=2.1tf/cm^2$) and the design strength of SIJ-ASD($Fy=2.4tf/cm^2$). It was also higher then the yield strength of steel tubes. The plastic deformation of stainless steel tubes was found to beto that of steel tubes.

  • The local buckling strength and post-local buckling strength of thin steel plates in the steel-concrete composite column were evaluated by nonlinear finite element analyses. The proposed width-to-thickness limit ratio was based on elastic buckling analyses, in which the increased local buckling capacity of the plate due to the in-filled concrete was considered by the boundary conditions of the thin plate. Considering the initial imperfections and residual stresses, we determined the initial local buckling strength and post-local buckling strength of the thin plates with various width-to-thickness ratios. The formula to evaluate the compressive capacity of the steel-concrete composite column based on the effective width of the plate was proposed. For verification, values determined by the formula were compared with the experimental results.

  • In order to clarify the behavior of beam-to-concrete filled steel tube column under cyclic loading condition, experimental studies were carried out on shear connections. Test parameters of this study are the width-to-thickness ratio and the effect on beams with or without slab and diaphragm. Test results show that the moment-rotation relationships of connections without slab are in the range of AISC regulation of pinned connections and the rotation capacity of connection is dependent upon the width-to-thickness ratio of the column.

  • This study was conducted to understand the characteristics of the compression behavior of steel plate-concrete(SC) structures with a width-to-thickness ratio under axial loading. SC structures are structural systems where concrete is poured into steel plates to which headed stud bolts had been attached inside. The specimens were classified according to the two width-to-thickness (W/T) ratios of 1.60 and 3.56. Through these experiments, the following conclusions could be arrived at. The fracture pattern of the specimens showed that steel plate buckling occurred between the stud lines, and that a crack occurred at the concrete spalling from the sides of the concrete before the system reached the maximum compressive strength. The maximum compressive strength of the specimens was larger than that of the existing equations (AISC 2005, ACI 318-05, and KBC 2005). With the increased W/T ratio of the specimens, the strength of the concrete core was decreased to account for the confinement effects from the steel plates.

  • This study numerically investigates buckling behavior of press braked steel plates with a free edge that consists of the upper flange of U-shaped box girder. Since the press-braked plates include a rounded edge, the effective width to thickness ratio of the press-braked upper flange is obscure to determine the nominal compressive strength. This study performed 3D finite element analyses to evaluate an equivalent effective width of cold-formed plate with a free edge. Through the parametric numerical analyses, the elastic buckling stresses of the rounded corner plates were compared with those of general flat plates and then, the equivalent effective width has been estimated. A comparative study with Euler buckling formula speculated in the domestic design specifications has been conducted.
