  • This study was undertaken to measure and analyze the thermal environment characteristics of the grey permeable cement concrete pavement(GPCCP), the permeable cement concrete brick pavement(PCCBP) compared with impermeable cement concrete pavement(ICCP) and bare soil(BS) under the summer outdoor environment. Following is a summary of major results. 1) The peak surface temperature was greatest in the GPCCP$(54.2^{\circ}C)$ followed by ICCP$(47.2^{\circ}C)$ rut August 2, 2002, the hottest day$(35.3^{\circ}C\;of\;highest\;temperature)$ during the experiment; peak temperature in the ICCP and BS were $45.5^{\circ}C)$ and $45.3^{\circ}C)$ respectively. 2) Analysis of heat budget of the pavements has revealed that the heat environment was worse in the GPCCP than that in the ICCP and that this was mainly due to a low albedo in the former(0.2) relative to that of the latter(0.4). 3) Analysis of heat budget of the pavements has revealed that the heat environment was worse in the GPCCP than that in the PCCBP, BS and that this was mainly due to a decreased latent heat resulting from a time dependent decreasing impact of rainfall. 4) It is necessary to make cool pavements to further studies on light-colored surface materials for attaining high albdo and construction methods which can enhance the latent heat through the continuous evaporation from pavements surface. 5) Vertical arrangement of pavement layers has not been considered in the present study, which has been focuses on the heat characteristics of the surface layer materials. Accordingly, future studies will have to be empasized on pavement methods including the vertical arrangement of the pavement layers.

  • PURPOSES : This purpose of this study is to analyze the effect to autogenous shrinkage of the top-layer material of a two-lift concrete pavement mixing both silica fume and polymer powder. METHODS : The bottom-layer of a two-lift concrete pavement was paved with original portland cement (OPC) with a 20~23 cm thickness. Additionally, the top-layer which is directly exposed to the environment and vehicles was paved with a high-performance concrete (HPC) with a 7~10 cm thickness. These types of pavements can achieve a long service life by reducing joint damage and increasing the abrasion and scaling resistance. In order to integrate the different bottom and top layer materials, autogenous shrinkage tests were performed in this study according to the mixing ratio of silica fume and polymer powder, which are the admixture of the top-layer material. RESULTS : Autogenous shrinkage decreased when polymer powder was used in the mix. Contrary to this, autogenous shrinkage tended to rise with increasing silica fume content. However, the effects were not significant when small amounts of polymer powder were used (3% and 11%). CONCLUSIONS : The durability and compressive strength increase when silica fume is used in the mix. The flexural strength considerably increases and autogenous shrinkage of concrete decreases when polymer powder is used in the mix. As seen from above, the proper use of these materials improves not only durability, but also autogenous shrinkage, leading to better shrinkage crack control in the concrete.

  • The mechanical properties appeared at the concrete mixed with Polypropylene fiber($1kg/m^3$, $3kg/m^3$, $5kg/m^3$) are compared with normal concrete and wire mesh one and evaluated. Achieved slump test to search effect that PP fiber gets to workability, even if the mixing amount of fiber increases, confirmed that slump value is no change almost. The no difference can be caused by hard mixture, but because of the big softness of fiber there is no effect greatly up to PP fiber mixing amount $5kg/m^3$ even with soft mixture. Compressive strengths and flexural strengths of the concretes with PP fiber and without the fiber are appeared almost alike. If examine load resistance ability by PP fiber mixing amount increase, it could know that the increase of fiber mixing amount improves load resistance ability and the toughness index is increased. While normal concrete is broken at the same time with crack, fiber mixed concrete stand in flexure load continuously after crack occurrence. In compare with wire mesh embeded concrete, wire mesh mixed concrete stands in some degree in flexure load by wire mesh crack occurrence and the test piece was broken at the same time. But, it could know that the PP fiber mixed concrete resist continuously to flexure load in bigger displacement.

  • PURPOSES: In Korea, rapid maintenance of distressed concrete pavement is required to prevent traffic jam of the highway. Asphalt concrete overlay has been used as a general maintenance method of construction for aged concrete pavement. AC overlay on existing concrete pavements experience various early distresses such as reflection crack, pothole and rutting, due to different physical characteristics between asphalt overlay and existing concrete pavement. Bonded concrete overlay(BCO) is a good alternative since it has advantages that can reduce various distresses during the service life since overlay material has similar properties with existing concrete pavements. Recently, BCO which uses the ultra rapid harding cement has been applied for maintenance of highway. BCO has advantage of structural performance since it does monolithic behave with existing pavement. Therefore, it is important to have a suitable bond strength criteria for securing performance of BCO. Bond strength criteria should be larger than normal tensile stress and horizontal shear stress occurred by traffic and environmental loading at bond interface. Normal tensile stress and horizontal shear stress need to estimated for the establishment of practical bond strength criteria. METHODS: This study aimed to estimate the bond stresses at the interface of BCO using the three dimensional finite element analysis. RESULTS: As a result of this study, major failure mode and maximum bond stress are evaluated through the analysis of normal tensile stress and horizontal shear stress for various traffic and environmental load conditions. CONCLUSIONS: It was known that normal tensile stresses are dominated by environmental loading, and, horizontal shear stresses are dominated by traffic loading. In addition, bond failure occurred by both of normal tensile stresses and horizontal shear stresses; however, normal tensile stresses are predominated over horizontal shear stresses.

  • PURPOSES : Hollows are easily made, and bearing capacity can be lowered near underground structures because sublayers of pavement settle for a long time due to difficult compaction at the position. If loadings are applied in this condition, distresses may occur in pavement and, as the result, its lifespan can decrease due to the stress larger than that expected in design phase. Although reinforced slab is installed on side of box culvert to minimize the distresses, length of the reinforced slab is fixed as 6m in Korea without any theoretical consideration. The purpose of this paper is investigating the behavior of concrete pavement according to the cover depth of the box culvert ad the length of the reinforced slab. METHODS : The distresses of concrete pavement slabs were investigated and cover depth was surveyed at position where the box culverts were located in expressways. The concrete pavements including the box culverts were modeled by finite element method and their behaviors according to the soil cover depth were analyzed. Wheel loading was applied after considering self weight of the pavement and temperature gradient of the concrete pavement slab at Yeojoo, Gyeonggi where a test road was located. After installing pavement joint at various positions, behavior of the pavement was analyzed by changing the soil cover depth and length of the reinforced slab. RESULTS : As the result, the tensile stress developed in the pavement slab according to the joint position, cover depth, and reinforced slab length was figured out. CONCLUSIONS : More reasonable and economic design of the concrete pavement including the box culvert is expected by the research results.

  • PURPOSES : The purpose of this paper is showing that the state of pavement sublayers can be evaluated differently according to direction of FWD. METHODS : The concrete pavement slabs above subgrade without anything, subgrade with cavity, and box culvert were modeled by finite element method(FEM). The modeled pavements were analyzed by changing the direction of falling weight deflectometer(FWD). The deflection results obtained from FEM were used to calculate radius of relative stiffness and composite modulus of subgrade reaction using AREA method. Then, the analyzed results were compared to the results of the test performed at the Korea Expressway Corporation(KEC) test road. RESULTS : The composite modulus of subgrade reaction increased with subgrade elastic modulus, while radius of relative stiffness decreased. The pavement sections of pure earth showed the consistent results regardless of FWD direction. In case there was cavity, the radius of relative stiffness was larger and composite modulus of subgrade reaction was smaller when FWD was leaving the cavity than when approaching the cavity. This pattern became clear when the cavity got larger. In case of the section with box culvert, the pattern was opposite to the case of cavity. When the soil cover depth increased, the effect of box culvert got smaller. When the load was applied far from the cavity and box culvert, the effect was also declined. The test performed at the KEC test road showed identical results to those of finite element analysis. CONCLUSIONS : The direction of FWD should be considered in evaluation of the state of pavement sublayers because it can be evaluated differently even under identical condition.

  • PURPOSES : The objective of this study is to evaluate the tack-coating material's properties using the bitumen bond strength(BBS) test and damping test as function of changed curing times. In this study, bonding strength tests were performed according to the curing time of tack coating materials. METHODS : In order to investigate bonding characteristic of tack coating materials, the Pneumatic Adhesion tensile Testing Instrument(PATTI) device is used to measure the bond strength between the tack coating materials and aggregate substrate based on the AASHTO TP-91. Also, damping test as in situ test was used to determine an appropriate traffic openting time for construction vehicle. Four different tack-coating materials were used in this study. The BBS tests were performed a one hour curing and testing temperatures of $5^{\circ}C$, $15^{\circ}C$, and $25^{\circ}C$. Damping test was conducted at 30min, 60min, 90min, and 120 min of curing times with temperatures of $20^{\circ}C$ and $30^{\circ}C$. RESULTS and CONCLUSIONS : The BBS test results show various bond strength as function of tack coat materials. At the same testing condition, A tack coat material shows almost two times higher than D tack coat materials although both materials are satisfied the criteria of material's physical properties. Also, Dampting test results shows similar trend with BBS test result. The damping test result was significantly changed as function of tack coat materials. Based on this study, the tack coating material's curing time is very important. Therefore, both curing time and the bond strength's characteristic has to be considered in standard specification.

  • PURPOSES: The objective of this study is to evaluate construction issues and design for transverse steel in continuously reinforced concrete pavement(CRCP). METHODS : The first continuously reinforced concrete pavement(CRCP) design procedure appeared in the 1972 edition of the "AASHTO Interim Guide for Design of Pavement Structures", which was published in 1981 with Chapter 3 "Guide for the Design of Rigid Pavement" revised. A theory that was accepted at that time for the analysis of steel stress in concrete pavement, called subgrade drag theory(SGDT), was utilized for the design of reinforcement of CRCP - tie bar design and transverse steel design - in the aforementioned AASHTO Interim Guide. However SGDT has severe limitations due to simple assumptions made in the development of the theory. As a result, any design procedures for reinforcement utilizing SGDT may have intrinsic flaws and limitations. In this paper, CRCP design procedure for transverse steel was introduced and the limitations of assumptions for SGDT were evaluated based on various field testing. RESULTS: Various field tests were conducted to evaluate whether the assumptions of SGDT are reasonable or not. Test results show that 1) temperature variations exist along the concrete slab depth, 2) very little stress in transverse steel, and 3) warping and curling in concrete slab from the field test results. As a result, it is clearly revealed out that the assumptions of SGDT are not valid, and transverse steel and tie bar designs should be based on more reasonable theories. CONCLUSIONS : Since longitudinal joint is provided at 4.1-m spacing in Korea, as long as joint saw-cut is made in accordance with specification requirements, the probability of full-depth longitudinal cracking is extremely small. Hence, for transverse steel, the design should be based on the premise that its function is to keep the longitudinal steel at the correct locations. If longitudinal steel can be placed at the correct locations within tolerance limits, transverse steel is no longer needed.

  • PURPOSES : The main purpose of this study is to develop a high elastic modulus and low-shrinkage roller-compacted concrete base (RCCB) in order to prevent fatigue cracking and reflective cracking in the asphalt surface layer of composite pavement. Using a rigid base material with low shrinkage can be a solution to this problem. Moreover, a strong rigid base with high elastic modulus is able to shift the location of critical tensile strain from the bottom of the asphalt layer to the bottom of the rigid base layer, which can prevent fatigue cracking in the asphalt layer. METHODS : Sensitivity analysis of composite pavement via numerical methods is implemented to determine an appropriate range of elastic modulus of the rigid base that would eliminate fatigue cracking. Various asphalt thicknesses and elastic moduli of the rigid base are used in the analysis to study their respective influences on fatigue cracking. Low-shrinkage RCC mixture, as determined via laboratory testing with various amounts of a CSA expansion agent (0%, 7%, and 10%), is found to achieve an appropriate low-shrinkage level. Shrinkage of RCC is measured according to KS F 2424. RESULTS : This study shows that composite pavements comprising asphalt thicknesses of (h1) 2 in. with E2 > 19 GPa, 4 in. with E2 > 15 GPa, and 6 in. with E2 > 11 GPa are able to eliminate tensile strain in the asphalt layer, which is the cause of fatigue cracking in this layer. Shrinkage test results demonstrate that a 10% CSA RCC mixture can reduce shrinkage by 84% and 93% as compared to conventional RCC and PCC, respectively. CONCLUSIONS : According to the results of numerical analyses using various design inputs, composite pavements are shown to be able to eliminate fatigue cracking in composite pavement. Additionally, an RCC mixture with 10% CSA admixture is able to reduce or eliminate reflective cracking in asphalt surfaces as a result of the significant shrinkage reduction in the RCC base. Thus, this low-shrinkage base material can be used as an alternative solution to distresses in composite pavement.
