The purpose of this study is to examine the perception of the automated cataloging systems in academic libraries. For the purpose, the developing process and problems of automated cataloging systems were examined. The focus was on investigation of recognition of cataloging librarians and system developers. The result of this study is expected to analyze needs of cataloging librarians and overcome gaps with users and developers.

In ordo. to establish cataloging procedures for non-book materials(NBM), library has In make policy decisions which will apply to all materials. This study explores problem areas in bibliographic control and descriptive cataloging for NBM and issues to be decided in cataloging policy for NBM are presented. Recently proposed KORMARC Rules for Descriptive Cataloging, NBM is looked into and compared with AACR2R and some problems to be considered for revising are suggested. Principle and tools needed for subject analysis of NBM are discussed and special issues of subject analysis for NBM are presented.

The purpose of this study is to verify the gain and loss of cataloging outsourcing in Korea public libraries. To this end, the following specific research questions are investigated: (1) How much has cataloging outsourcing enhanced the efficiency of cataloging operations? (2) What is an influence of cataloging outsourcing on the quality of catalogs? and finally, (3) Is there any evidence to strengthen core library service by outsourcing cataloging? The data needed for this study were collected from a survey with 3 public libraries which have experienced outsourcing. To make a comparative study, a survey with 3 public libraries against outsourcing are also included.

This study aims to find the way how to operate cataloging work effectively and share it between libraries through web based cataloging manual. There have been various trials in using web based tools in ether parts of library such as acquisition and reference service. However, in case of cataloging. the rules and policies of each library are not united. and any cooperation In sharing them between libraries is not done. Therefore. for Information sharing, practical cooperation and unification in cataloging work, each library needs to make web cataloging manuals and share them. That is, building the web based cataloging tools makes it easier to access the cataloging works and keep them updated. Additionally, it could improve the communication between the librarians who are in charge of cataloging and provide the chance for cooperation and information sharing between libraries. With these roles, web based cataloging manual could be the basic for standardization of cataloging.

This study intends to make a comprehensive inquiry about the theoretical foundations of cataloging outsourcing. To the end, this study examined (1) backgrounds of cataloging outsourcing, 2) the pros and cons of cataloging outsourcing, (3) theoretical justification suggested by guardians of cataloging outsourcing, and (4) methodological limitations found in literatures on the subject. On the basis of it, finally suggested are methodologies for evaluating 'effectiveness' of cataloging outsourcing.

The purpose of this study intends to evaluate the usefulness of the automated cataloging systems. For the purpose. this study investigated theoretical methods for the quality criteria and developed 4 evaluation criteria. Also developed were indicators to measure the value of each criteria And the catalogers of academic libraries using three major LAS were carefully chosen to conduct the usefulness tests. The proposed model was verified reliability and validity. This study is suggested guidelines to evaluate and improve the automated cataloging systems.

The information Retrieval Protocol, Z39.50 is applied to the shared cataloging gateway. The history and functions of the Z39.50 are reviewed and the characteristics and the database update service of Z39.50 are taken into account in the notion of the shared cataloging. And for the test, one of the domestic on-line shared cataloging systems is adopted and newly remodelled using Z39.50 protocol. Two kinds of Z39.50 shared cataloging gateway models (th centralized shared cataloging gateway model and the distributed shared cataloging gateway model) are operated in Web server.

The purpose of this study is to study Bong Suk Park's thought and spirit in Korean Cataloging Rules for Oriental Books for illumination and revaluation of Bong Suk Park's library philosophy that was a pioneer of Korean library. The study examined a compilation backgrounds, configurations and characteristics of Korean Cataloging Rules for Oriental Books. A criticism of Korean Cataloging Rules for Oriental Books, creation and change process of Korean Cataloging Rules were examined. Though Bong Suk Park was worked from 1945 to 1950 for five years for Korean Library, he made a lot of contributions to Korean library. Based on this, the study examined the Rules, his thoughts and spirit in Korean Cataloging Rules for Oriental Books.

To the end, this study examined (1) how many libraries is carrying out the cataloging outsourcing, (2) why libraries consider cataloging outsourcing, (3) methods and procedures of cataloging outsourcing and (4) advantages and disadvantages of cataloging outsourcing from catalogers' perspectives. The data needed for discussion were collected by two methods : a survey with 138 public libraries and an in-depth interviews with 10 catalogers drawn from the survey participants.

This study intends to analyze the meanings and values of shared cataloging in public libraries. Emphasis was on verifying how useful KOLIS-NET is as a tool in order to share bibliographic data and library resources. To the end. this study investigates the recognition and participation of KOLIS-NET in public libraries. Finally suggested is strategies to improve both the poor quality and the poor services. The data needed for discussion were collected by an in-depth interviews with catalogers and a survey with 216 public libraries.
