Study on Buckling Instability of Expansion Tube using Finite Element Method (유한요소법을 이용한 팽창튜브의 좌굴불안전성에 관한 연구)

  • Since the kinetic energy is dissipated through plastic deformation energy generated in expanding process of the tube by a die. In order to successfully absorb the kinetic energy there should be no buckling in the expansion tube during expanding process. The buckling instability of the expansion tubes is affected by the initial boundary conditions, tube thickness and length. In this study, the effects of the tube thickness except length and initial boundary condition on the buckling instability are studied using a finite element method. In addition, Analysis procedure for nonlinear post-buckling analysis of expansion tube is established. There are three kinds of finite element analysis procedures for buckling analysis of expansion tube, quasi-static analysis, linear buckling analysis and nonlinear post-buckling analysis. The effect of the geometry imperfections defined as linear superimposition of buckling modes is considered in the nonlinear post-buckling analysis. The results of finite element analysis indicate that the buckling load increase with increase of thickness of tube and geometry imperfection. Finial buckling shapes are changed with respect to the geometry imperfection.

Effect of Punch Shapes on Failure Instability of Expansion Tube (펀치형상이 팽창튜브의 파단불안전성에 미치는 영향)

  • The rupture of an expansion tube is mainly affected by the expansion ratio and the external shape of the punch used to expand the tube. In order to prevent the tube from rupture, the effect of the external shape of the punch should be considered in the design. The aim of this paper is to confirm the effect of key design parameters of the punch on rupture of the tube using a finite element analysis with a ductile damage model. The results of the analysis indicated that the expansion ratio of the tube was mainly affected by variation of the radius of the punch. However, the rupture was more affected by variation of the punch angle than the radius of the punch. The existence of a specific punch angle at which rupture did not occur, even if the radius of the punch was increased, was found from the results.

  • The market share of high-speed railway vehicles is increasing across the world. A high-performance impact energy absorption factor is essential to satisfy the safety standards of railway vehicles. A deformed tube assembly is a typical energy absorption factor in railway vehicles. The tube assembly comprises a deformed tube and a press-fitting punch, its performance depends on the absorption energy characteristics in the plastic zone of the tube. In this study, a deformed tube assembly of a railway vehicle is designed that can absorb a maximum impact energy of 200kJ under plastic deformation. Slab method and finite element analysis are used to estimate the reaction force of the punch in the initial stage, the performance of the designed tube assembly is confirmed experimentally.

Hydrogen Storage Technology by Using Porous Carbon Materials (다공성 탄소계 재료를 이용한 수소저장 기술)

  • The technologies for improving the capacity of hydrogen storage were investigated and the recent data of hydrogen storage by using various porous carbon materials were summarized. As the media of hydrogen storage, activated carbon, carbon nanotube, expanded graphite and activated carbon fiber were mainly investigated. The hydrogen storage in the carbon materials increased with controlled pore size about 0.6~0.7 nm. In case of catalyst, transition metal and their metal oxide were mainly applied on the surface of carbon materials by doping. Activated carbon is relatively cheap because of its production on a large scale. Carbon nanotube has a space inside and outside of tube for hydrogen storage. In case of graphite, the distance between layers can be extended by intercalation of alkali metals providing the space for hydrogen adsorption. Activated carbon fiber has the high specific surface area and micro pore volume which are useful for hydrogen storage. Above consideration of research, porous carbon materials still can be one of the promising materials for reaching the DOE target of hydrogen storage.

탄소나노플레이트 지지체를 이용한 3차원 구조 탄소나노튜브/탄소나노플레이트 혼성체 합성법

  • 흑연 박리를 통해 형성된 탄소나노플레이트를 탄소나노튜브 합성을 위한 지지체로 적용하여 탄소나노플레이트 위에 직접 탄소나노튜브를 합성함으로써 3차원 구조의 탄소나노튜브/탄소나노플레이트 나노혼성체를 합성하였음. 흑연의 박리를 통해 탄소나노플레이트를 제조하기 위해서 층간화합물 삽입과 열처리를 통해 팽창흑연을 제조하고, 물리적 분쇄 과정과 액상 고압균질기 방법을 통해 두께 30nm 이하, 수 마이크론 크기의 탄소나노플레이트를 제조하고 동결건조 방법으로 탄소나노플레이트를 제조하였음. 제조된 탄소나노플레이트 상에 탄소나노튜브 합성을 위해서 탄소나노플레이트 표면처리 공정을 적용하였는데, 표면처리 방법 및 물질에 따라 금속 촉매의 담지량 및 담지 형상이 결정되어 합성되어지는 탄소나노튜브의 합성 수율과 합성된 탄소나노튜브의 형성이 다르게 나타났다. 표면처리 방법으로는 산처리방법, 흡착성 고분자 처리법, 무전해 도금법, 무기산화물 처리법이 적용되었다. 또한 담지되는 촉매 종류 및 함량, 조촉매 적용에 따라 탄소나노튜브 합성 거동을 분석하여 최적 촉매시스템을 구축하여 촉매담지체 질량 대비 700% 이상의 고수율의 탄소나노튜브/탄소나노플레이트 혼성체 합성법을 개발하였다.

  • 산화비스무트는 리튬이온과의 반응에서 현재 상용화된 그래파이트보다 높은 이론용량을 가지고 있으나, 리튬이온과의 반응에서 비교적 큰 부피팽창 특성을 가져 리튬이차전지의 음극재로서 상용화가 어려운 단점이 있다. 본 연구에서는, 이러한 문제점을 개선하기 위하여 양극산화법을 통해 충 방전시 부피팽창 변화가 매우 적은 타이타니아 나노튜브를 제조한 후, 그 위에 스프레이 방법으로 산화비스무트를 코팅하여 두 물질의 복함체를 만듦으로써 용량과 구조적 안정성을 향상시키는 방법을 소개한다. 음극재의 구조적 특성은 고분해능 주사전자현미경 (HR-SEM), 고분해능 엑스선 회절분석기(XRD)를 통해 조사하였으며, 전기화학 임피던스 분광법 (EIS), 순환전류법 (CV), 충 방전 싸이클 분석을 통해 리튬이차전지의 작동원리와 보다 향상된 성능을 규명하였다.

The study on the development of 6m class sports RIB (팽창식 튜브를 부착한 6m급 스포츠 보트 개발에 관한 연구)

  • The 6m class high speed boat is developed with a durable hull and inflatable tube, which is called RIB(Rigid Inflatable Boat), for the purpose of marine leisure. In the stage of the conceptual design, its requirements to be optimized are determined based on the presented information of similar marine leisure RIBs. The 3-D graphical technique using Marine Rhino is utilized to optimize the compartment layout of RIB. The stability analysis is performed for the light and full load conditions with and without the inflatable tube. In addition, the sea keeping and hydrodynamic performance was tested using the proto-type ship in the sea condition. From the results of the computation and the sea trial test, it shows that the performance of the marine leisure RIB satisfies the speed, the convenience, and the stability requirements. This study provides the typical information of the design factors and the procedure to manufacture the marine leisure RIB.

Measurement of Mechanical Property and Thermal Expansion Coefficient of Carbon-Nanotube-Reinforced Epoxy Composites (탄소나노튜브로 강화된 에폭시 복합재료의 기계적 물성과 열팽창 계수 측정)

  • By using shear mixing and ultrasonication, we fabricated specimens of well-dispersed multi-walled carbon nanotube composites. To confirm the proper dispersion of the filler, we used scanning electron microscopy images for quantitative evaluation and a tensile test for qualitative assessment. Furthermore, the coefficients of thermal expansion of several specimens having different filler contents were calculated from the measured thermal strains and temperatures of the specimens. Based on the microscopy images of the well-dispersed fillers and the small deviations in the measurements of the tensile strength and stiffness, we confirmed the proper dispersion of nanotubes in the epoxy. As the filler contents were increased, the values of tensile strength increased from 58.33 to 68.81 MPa, and those of stiffness increased from 2.93 to 3.27 GPa. At the same time, the coefficients of thermal expansion decreased. This implies better thermal stability of the specimen.

  • In this study, silicon / carbon nanotube / carbon composite particles with high capacity were fabricated by using micro-sized silicon particles and carbon nanotubes as an anode material for lithium ion batteries. The silicon / carbon nanotube / carbon composite particles were prepared by spray drying method to prepare spherical composite particles. The composite particles have the network structure of the carbon nanotubes around the silicon particles, in which the silicon particles and the carbon nanotubes are bonded by amorphous carbon. It appears that the volume expansion of silicon is effectively buffered and the electrical contact is maintained in the network structure of the composite particles during charge-discharge cycles.

  • The "energy separation phenomenon" through a vortex tube has been a long-standing mechanical engineering problem whose operational principle is not yet known. In order to find the operational principle of the vortex tube, CFD analysis of the flow field in the vortex tube has been carried out. It was found that the energy separation mechanism in the vortex tube consists of basically two major thermodynamic-fluid mechanical processes. One is the isentropic expansion process at the inlet nozzle, during which the gas temperature is nearly isentropically cooled. Second process is the viscous dissipation heating due to the high level of turbulence in both flow passages toward cold gas exit as well as the hot gas exit of the vortex tube. Since the amount of such a viscous heating is different between the two passages, the gas temperature at the cold exit is much lower than that at the hot exit.
