  • Unlike the past, when fashion brands adopted unilateral communication with their consumers, the brands today have recognized the importance of bi-lateral communication. This has led to the companies producing fashion films as a means to elicit a consensus in opinion between the brands and the consumers. Such fashion films should be understood as films using fashion that transcends time, and also as a type of fashion media. This study, which is based upon the understanding that fashion films are a part of strategic marketing for enhancing the value of brands, used domestic and international literature in order to define fashion films, and establish a theoretical basis for these films. Corroborative study was also conducted for the purpose of practical categorization. This study aims to investigate the characteristics of fashion films, and to suggest a new approach to the study of fashion films. The study adopted the research methodology used in Dudley Andrew's film theory in order to create a theoretical frame that can be used to categorize fashion films. The theory is of significance because it is the basis for the category of motion picture fashion film and media technology fashion film. The study on the categorization and the characteristics of fashion films based upon 6 sub-categories shows a consistent trend of fashion films. From the results, it can be inferred that the films contribute, in part, to the enhancement of brand value. Fashion films have shown rapid growth with the mixture of other media, and with the introduction of cutting-edge technology. Fashion films can be used as new marketing methods for the fashion brands in this digital age.

  • The purpose of this study is to examine emerging trends in fashion films and the impact of COVID-19 through analysis of Prada films produced before and after the initial spread of the COVID-19 pandemic. We selected 40 cases occurring prior to the pandemic, from June to December 2019, and 21 cases occurring since the outbreak, from June to December 2020. To identify relevant trends, we conduct a literature review and examine a range of case studies. First, travel restrictions and confronting activities currently inhibit production. Through our case study analysis, we identify nineteen cases in between before and after COVID-19. Secondly, Prada can be seen to mainly produce episodes and promotional films. Additionally, it develops content showcasing brand values in environmental, cultural, creative, and sport-related fields; intended audiences extend beyond the realm of fashion. Thirdly, a new film category began to develop after the outbreak of COVID-19, namely, narrative films utilizing virtual interactions. According to our analysis results, we expect film production that is increasingly facilitated by virtual communication, technology utilization, and online platforms to continue even after the resolution of COVID-19. New film categories will emerge, and we predict that the gap between the number of cases before and after COVID-19 will narrow.

  • In the 21st century, fashion films are frequently used throughout the fashion industry. In particular, as videos have become an essential element and a communication tool of social media, they are becoming even more important in the world of fashion. In this study, different types of short-length fashion films (< 0:60) in current use were derived, and the effects of on the cognitive and emotional responses of users were analyzed using electroencephalogram(EEG) findings. EEG measurements were performed using Epoc+ on 31 healthy women aged 20-29 years after viewing six types of fashion films[fiction/well-made, fiction/user generated content(UGC), documentary/well-made, documentary/UGC, art/well-made, and art/UGC] in random order. The results demonstrate differences among four types of films. Specifically, alpha waves in the frontal lobe decreased more while watching documentary/UGC films than while watching art/well-made films. Gamma waves in the temporal lobe decreased more while watching fiction/well-made films than while watching documentary/UGC films. Furthermore, theta waves in the occipital lobe increased more while watching fiction/well-made films than while watching art/UGC films. These findings suggest that different types of fashion films can stimulate different parts of the brain that process thinking, cognition, emotion, and visual and auditory information and consequently evoke emotional responses.

  • As generations Y and Z gain influence, luxury fashion brands are interacting with younger digital consumers through fashion film, seeking to offer them a differentiated brand experience. Using a literature review addressing characteristics of fashion films as a communication medium and luxury fashion brands' heritage in the digital era, this study examines how brands express their heritage through fashion film, categorizing those expressions in terms of implicit meaning. The case study analyzed films from Louis Vuitton, Chanel, Dior, and Burberry uploaded to YouTube between 2018 and 2020. First, to retain their status as luxury, brands emphasize historical legitimacy. Specifically, they highlight their iconic historical image, their succession of creative directors, valuable historic locations, and diversity of consumer's brand experiences. Second, by stressing craftsmanship, integrating contemporary art and local culture, and utilizing a museum aura, they use brand heritage to acquire luxury status. Third, they attempt to mythify the founders by creating the persona of the fashion designer and the artist. The results show that the heritage depicted in fashion films is a key way in which luxury fashion brands resolve the tension between accessibility and exclusivity that they encounter and to get consumers emotionally engaged with brands.

  • Fashion brands communicate with consumers through the use of fashion films that are effective in the delivery of the image. This is because digital media (such as fashion films) are popular and accessible as well as effective in attracting people's attention. The reasons why fashion films have become a new fashion media among many others is becuase they are based on an existing platform. This study will examine offline platforms of fashion film: flagship store, fashion exhibition, and fashion show. The offline platform of a fashion film is a physical space where a fashion film can be exhibited and viewed as a medium that can effectively convey fashion film to consumers. As a research method, the concept of an offline platform of fashion film is established based on a literature review of fashion films and platform that is followed by an empirical case study. The study results show that the offline platform of a fashion film is in the progress of turning into an autotelic space where the consumption of such culture as cinema and theater has become possible.
