  • Barley flakes were developed by extrusion cooking using broken kernels, by-products of the barley pearling process. Broken kernels from both non-waxy and waxy barley broken kernels were sufficiently gelatinized at the barrel temperature of over $100^{\circ}C$ and the moisture content of broken kernels of over 35%. Cutting and flaking roll separating properties of pellets prepared from non-waxy barley broken kernels were better than those of waxy barley broken kernels. Characteristics of pellets prepared by extrusion cooking in different mixing ratios of non-waxy and waxy barley broken kernels were investigated. As the mixing ratio of waxy barley broken kernels increased, RVA peak viscosity, apparent viscosity, and yield stress of prepared pellets decreased, while flow behavior index increased. As the mixing ratio of waxy barley broken kernels increased, compressive strength and bulk density of deep-fat fried flakes drastically decreased, and the size of air cells on cross-section increased, and thickness of cell-constituting bodies decreased. Sensory evaluation results showed that acceptability for texture and taste of flakes inclosed as the mixing ratio of waxy barley broken kernels increased, and optimum mixing level of waxy barley broken kernels appeared to be 30-40%.

  • A single particle crushing test was carried out for recycled aggregates from waste concrete while demolishing various structures. When the recycled aggregates were used for backfill or road subbase materials, load-displacement and crushing characteristics were analyzed. The recycled aggregates with hydrates and aggregates were sorted into 40 mm size (75-40 mm) and 20 mm size (40-20 mm). At initial loading, their irregular surface was closed to and then crushed by loading plate. Such first crushing stage was called 'Surface crushing'. Further loading, some hydrate was crushed and detached from aggregate, and such process repeated several times. This state is called 'hydrate crushing'. The final state is called 'aggregate crushing' in which aggregate crushed and following load suddenly dropped down. As the load increased, such crushing cycle is repeated several times. The shapes of aggregates are round or square, and triangle or long shaped. Depending on their shapes and surface conditions, they crushed in different ways. The 63% of aggregates showed more than 50% load reduction due to aggregate crushing. The 90% load reduction occurred at 15% of aggregates. The 40 mm aggregate crushed at maximum load between 3.05-4.38 kN and 70% of crushed aggregates were less than 20 mm.

  • This study was conducted in an effort to meet the need for domestic production of hydroponic media and for medium development using recycled hydroponic rockwool slabs. Two experiments were conducted to evaluate the growth of plug seedlings of petunia 'Romeo' in various mixtures including particles of used rockwool slabs (rockwool particles) and wood chips. In the first experiment, seedlings were grown in plugs filled with mixtures of steam- sterilized rockwool particles and chestnut wood chips, which had been weathered for six months and screened through either 2.8 mm or 5.6 mm sieve, at the mixing ratio of 100:0, 75:25, 50:50, 25:75, or 0:100 (v/v). In the second experiment, seedlings were grown in plugs filled with twenty different mixtures of steam-sterilized particles of used hydroponic rockwool slabs with 4 mm chestnut or pine wood chips, coir, peatmoss, or perlite. In the first experiment seedling growth was not affected by particle size of chestnut wood chips, was superior in the control (commercial plug medium) and in 100% rockwool particles, but was suppressed as mixing ratio of chestnut wood chips increased. In the second experiment, leaf length, and shoot fresh and dry weights were the greatest in rockwool particles+peatmoss+coir treatment, followed by rockwool particles+peatmoss treatment. Leaf length was suppressed as ratio of wood chips increased, especially of chestnut wood chips. Root development was the greatest in rockwool particles+peatmoss+perlite treatment, followed by the control, and rockwool particles+peatmoss+coir treatment. The growth was suppressed as the mixing ratio of rockwool particles, peatmoss, or coir decreased.

  • The ballast, one of track components, plays an essential role as intermedium in transmitting train load to subgrade safely, and the deterioration of ballast directly effects the growth of track irregularity. In this study, we determined the main factor of ballast deterioration was miniature of ballast gravel caused MTT (Multiple Tie Tamper) works and accumulated traffic loads. To estimate the deterioration characteristics of ballast, we carried out field test (Chap.2) through track construction for test and the model test (Chap.3) simulating the actual operation environment, have done a comparative analysis with the sample's result (crushing rate) of high-speed railroad running actually.

  • A large amount of recycled aggregates was produced and crushed from old buildings and pavements. In this study, when these aggregates are re-used in subbase or subgrade materials in near construction sites, their engineering characteristics caused by crushing are investigated in terms of permeability and shear strength. Three different sizes of aggregates (31.5-45.0 mm, 19.0-31.5 mm, 9.5-19.0 mm) and their mixtures, a total of 7 types of aggregates were used in compaction tests (modified D and B methods). After compaction tests, aggregates were sieved and analyzed with four different breakage factors ($B_{15}$, $C_c$, $B_{10}$, $B_r$). The D compaction method gave 2.0-8.0 times more crushable than B compaction method. The breakage factors for the largest size aggregate was 1.4-3.0 times higher than those of the smallest size aggregate. For aggregates with 5.6-9.5 mm sizes, the samples were prepared with $B_{15}$ of 1, 3, 10, 20, 30, 50, 60, and 70 for permeability and direct shear tests. As $B_{15}$ increased, the hydraulic conductivity decreased up to 1/22 for $B_{15}=50$. As $B_{15}$ increased from 1 to 50, the peak friction angle increased from $46.1^{\circ}$ to $54.5^{\circ}$. On the other hand, the friction angle decreased after $B_{15}=60$.

  • Rockwool slabs used for hydroponic cultures are expected to have potential to be reused after breakdown as a growing medium component for hydroponic culture of vegetables and cut flowers, pot plants, or plug plants. This study was conducted to test the feasibility of using particles of used rockwool slabs (PURS) mixed with woodchips for growing plug seedlings of ‘Nokkufang’ pepper. In the first experiment growth of pepper seedlings was tested in media of steam sterilized PURS mixed with chestnut woodchips (CW), which was weatherized for six months and screened through 2.8 mm or 5.6 mm sieves, at 100:0, 75:25, 50:50, 28:75 or 0:100 (%, v/v). In the second experiment growth of pepper seedlings was tested in 20 different media containing steam sterilized PURS mixed with 4 mm chestnut woodchips (CW), 4 mm pinc woodchips (PW), coir, peatmoss, or perlite. In the first experiment, there were no significant growth differences as affectcd by particle size of CW, while the overall best growth was achieved il1 the control and l00% PURS. In the second experiment, seedling growth was enhanced as compared to the control in 100% PURS or PURS mixed with peatmoss, coir, or perlite. In contrast, growth was suppressed as the proportion of peatmoss or coir mixed with PURS decreased and the proportion of CW increased. Growth was better in the PURS + peatmoss than in the 100% PURS or PURS + coir, and when woodchips were mixed with coir than peatmoss.

  • Storage root yield of sweetpotato was decreasing owing to continuous sweetpotato cropping, debasement of soil physical properties, increasing incidence of pest and disease. This study was conducted to evaluate the changes in physicochemical properties of the soil owing to subsoiling (subsoiling to 50 cm depth), and the effect on growth and yield of sweetpotato. The subsoiling treatments included subsoiling treated every year for two years, subsoiling in the first year, and no subsoiling control. The soil physical properties measured were bulk density, hardness, porosity, three phase. Bulk density, porosity, soild (%) of three phase were improved by subsoiling in topsoil and subsoil. Main vine length and vine yield in subsoiling soil were higher than those in no subsoiling soil, but those were not significantly different. Yield of marketable storage root in subsoiling soils treated every year for two years and treated in the first year was more increased 17% and 20% than no subsoiling soil, respectively. The number of marketable storage root per plant was also higher in subsoiling soils than no subsoiling soil, but it was not significantly different. Soluble solid contents and total free sugar contents of storage root of sweetpotato were not significantly different among the treatments. These results show that improving soil physical properties by subsoiling could promote high yield of marketable storage root in continuous sweetpotato cropping field.

  • Hydraulic fracturing is the key technology for production of shale gas, which is one of the major unconventional resources. Brittleness index is one of the most important mechanical properties which determine the efficiency of hydraulic fracturing. It was required that the production of shale gas increases with more brittle behavior. Confusingly, there are numerous definitions available for brittleness of rock. This paper summarizes various definitions of brittleness index, and presents correlation analysis of the brittleness indices by using the laboratory experimental results of 48 shale specimens in Korea. Generally, it shows a very weak positive correlation between the brittleness index ($B_1$) which is the ratio of uniaxial compressive strength to tensile strength and the brittleness index ($B_3$) which is calculated by using the Youngs modulus and Poisson's ratio. In addition, the role of Poissons ratio is not clear in defining brittleness indices. In conclusion, standardization of definition for brittleness index is required to apply it to hydraulic fracturing as a parameter for predicting the efficiency.

  • It is necessary to re-establish the code and to control the quality of the recycled aggregate itself for ensuring the useability of the recycled aggregate using waste concrete. Generally, adhering mortar cause of the water absorption ratio increment and strength decreased at the surface of the aggregate of the recycled aggregate using waste concrete, thus removing the adhering mortar could increase the useability of the recycled aggregate in the concrete industry. In this study, as a quality control method of the recycled aggregate using waste concrete, the quality characteristic of the recycled aggregate according to the mixing proportion between the recycled and the natural aggregate is obtained Therefore, a system is established to reuse the recycled aggregate in the construction industry.
