  • The weathering characteristics of periodically submerged sedimentary rocks in the Sayeon dam, Ulsan was examined by field work, electron probe micro-analysis, X-ray diffraction, and X-ray fluorescence spectrometry. Analysis of fracture zone and exfoliation showed the submerged sedimentary rocks have undergone severe mechanical weathering. Mechanical weathering in the water-rock interface accelerated chemical weathering, such as dissolution and alteration of the most of minerals except for quartz in the weathering zone. The dissolution of carbonates specially calcite, is remarkable creating the cavities, whereas formation of minerals including clay minerals is not active. The sedimentary rocks have been periodically submerged for a certain period of time, and have repeated freezing and thawing. This mechanical weathering favored infiltration, which accelerated mineral dissolution. The high content of easily soluble carbonate of the sedimentary rocks is likely the major cause of intense chemical weathering. The dissolved elements within the infiltrated water interrupted the occurrence of clay and weathering minerals, and expend fractures by infiltrated water accelerated weathering process.

  • As a part of geophysical studies on segmentation of the Ulsan fault, walkaway refraction seismic data were measured at 17 stations near National Road 7 between Kyungju and Ulsan. Seismic anisotropy was analyzed in the offset range of 1-48 m. The average refraction velocity of 1787 m/s indicates the refractor is the upper boundary of weathered basement. P-wave anisotropy is computed to be 0.056 in average, which may serve as a weak evidence that the strike of major geologic structure coincide with the inferred fault direction. In the south of the province boundary between Kyungsangnam-do and Kyungsangbuk-do, the velocity anisotropy is normal in that P-wave velocity in the strike direction is faster than the one measured in the dip direction. On the contrary, it appears that the fault strikes in many directions or that fractures may be developed better in the dip direction in the northern par. Such a difference in anisotropic pattern is believed to be a seismic evidence indicating that a segmentation boundary of the Ulsan fault locates near the province boundary.

  • The geology of the Tumbang Lapan area consists of Permian to Carboniferous metamorphic rocks, Cretaceous granitic rocks, and Permian to Tertiary sedimentary and volcanic rocks. Three faults are developed in surveyed area, and are functioned as channels of the hydrothermal solution which farmed quartz veins within tuff3. In the mineralized area, argillic and propylitic alterations are dominant. Argillic altered rocks show the alteration mineral assemblages of kaolinte+sericite+quartz+chlorite+pyrite. Mineral association in propylitic alteration is chlorite+epidote+feldspar+quartz+pyrite+ magnetite. Vein type, fracture filling, stockwork are observed in survey area. As a result of analysis of samples from quartz veins and altered rocks, some mineralized rocks showed $0.01\~4.6g/t$ of gold.

  • In this study, 5 steps of different delay intervals are applied to a plasma rock-breaking machine that is driven by electric shocks in order to improve the workability of the traditional single-shot type plasma rock-breaking operation. The sequential steps use the electrolyte volume per delay of 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 kg and it has been analyzed to measure the delay time and level of the ground vibration and noise according to exploding. The delay time of the rock-breaking machine by an electric shock of 5 steps has used about 40~50ms at the electrolyte connected from 1 to 3 holes, about 70~80ms at the electrolyte connected from 4 to 5 holes. It is identified that the extents of the ground vibration is low to 1 over 3~6 compared with that of the emulsion explosives.

  • Recently resistivity survey is widely used for site investigations in the field of civil engineering. Since such application area requires accurate interpretation tools especially in the area of complicated geology and rough terrain topography, we developed a three-dimensional (3-D) resistivity inversion code, which can reconstruct real earth structures. Furthermore, the inversion code gives resolution-enhanced images by applying the ACB(Active Constraint Balancing) method. With the help of this inversion code, 3-D resistivity survey is now used as new techniques for site investigations in civil engineering problem. By imaging the 3-D resistivity distribution, we could get useful informations such as depth distribution of basement rock, distribution of weak zone, fractures and cavities which is crucial to civil engineers.

  • A hydraulic breaker is an attachment installed at the end of excavator arm and is used for breaking. As per the authors' knowledge, there have been no research results on reducing the weight of the hydraulic breaker even though this weight reduction is very important for improving the performance of the excavator. In this study, we minimize the weight of the housing of the hydraulic breaker under normal operating conditions, while the maximum stress of the housing is lower than the allowable stress. A meta-model, which is generated by using the CAE results for the sampling design points determined by an orthogonal array, is used to solve the minimization problem. The weight of the housing according to the optimal design is found to be lower than the original weight by 4.8% while satisfying the constraint on the maximum stress.

  • Microscopic study and X-ray diffraction analysis were carried out to find out rock type, tock forming minerals; and weathering characteristics of rocks at the constructing site of the churyong Tunnel, Kyongju-Gun, Kyongbuk. Seismic velocity and compressional strength were measured to evaluate mechanical properties of rock. The rock of the study area is Jurassic tuff consisting of clay minerals, crystals of quartz and feldspar, fragments of volcanic rocks and shale. Fresh tuff has compressional strength of about $443kg/\textrm{cm}^2$ and seismic velocity of about 3680m/sec in average. It is classified as soft rock. Rock fragment within tuff is andesite and it has compressional strength of about $2500kg/\textrm{cm}^2$ and seismic velocity of about 4340m/sec in average. It is classified as hard rock. A good linear relationship is found between compressional streangth and seismic velocity in both laboratory sample and in-situ rocks. Laboratory samples has seismic velocities faster about 1.5km/sec than those in-situ rocks. It is interpreted that joints, fractures, and water content in the in-situ rocks result in decreas of seismic velocity. As Tuff has more than 50% of clay minerals in matrix and shale fragments, it absorbs water easily in atmospheric condition. Therefore, though the rock in the study area is medium hard rock before weathering, it is weathered very easily in the case of exposure to natural environment, comparing with other rock.

  • To determine the shallow subsurface structure and sliding surface of land creeping in 2016 at Hadong-gun, Gyeongsangnam-do, geophysical surveys (electric resistivity, and refraction seismic methods, borehole televiewer) and slope stability analysis were conducted. The subsurface structure delineated with borehole lithologies and seismic velocity structures provided the information that the sediment layer on the top of the slope was rather as thick as 20 m and the underlying weathered rock (anorthosite) was thinner than 1 m. Based on the tension cracks observed during the geological mapping, televiewer scanning was performed at the borehole BH-2 and detected the intensive fracture zones at the ground-water level, associated with the slip weak zones mapped in dipole-dipole electrical resistivity section. Downslope sliding and slightly upward pushing at the apex of high resistive bedrock explains the curved slip plane of the land creeping. Such a convex structure might play a role of natural toe abutment for preventing the downward development of slip weak zones. In slope stability analysis, the safety factors of the slip weak zone are calculated with varying the groundwater levels for dry and rainy seasons and the downslope is founded to be unstable with safety factor of 0.89 due to fully saturated material in rainy season.

  • Velocity structures were defined in the vicinty of the 140-m deep test borehole in the pungam basin through simultaneous inversion of surface seismic refraction and far-ofset VSP traveltime data. Seismicenergy generated at the surface by a seisgun was recorded both at 42 surface locations at 3-m intervalsalong the profiles in the N20E and its orthogonal directions and at 71 m depth in the borehole. Forthe ofset VSP study, seismic energy was generated by a 5 kg sledgehamer at the surface in the horizontal ofset range of -19.5∼+19.5 m from the borehole. The seismic signals were detected at 9∼99 m depths with 1∼2 m intervals and recorded for 204 ms per shot. After shot static corrections,first-arrival times picked from both the surface refraction and borehole records were simultaneouslyinverted to yield velocity tomograms. The tomograms indicate that a 1.5 m thick soil layer with velocities les than 500 m/s overlies basements having a velocity range of 3,067 ∼5,717 m/s. Within the basements,∼4 m and deeper than 71 m. The high-velocit yzones may be due to conglomerates intercalated with sandstones and siltstones. No evidence for large-scale fracture zones or faults is detected near the borehole
