  • The construction of an emergency spillway of Imha Dam is being in progress on the granite region including fault fractured zone. Considering that this tunnel is being excavated in three paralled rows, the pillar width between each tunnel and the face distance between each tunnel face were evaluated. The Influence of the fault fractured zone for the tunnel stability was investigated by numerical modelling in 3D. Various geophysical investigations and rock engineering field tests were carried out for these purposes. It was suitable that the second tunnel would be excavated in advance, maintaining the face distance between each tunnel face of minimum 25 m. The results of numerical modelling showed that the roof displacement and the convergence of the second tunnel were insignificant, and the maximum bending compressive stress, the maximum shear stress of shotcrete and the maximum axial force of rockbolt were also insignificant. Therefore, it was estimated that the stability of the spillway tunnel was ensured.

  • To increase the yield from groundwater wells in various rock types by hydrofracturing, tests of 12 wells were carried out as a part of sustainable groundwater development and artificial recharge project. Test wells are selected 5 wells in Jurassic granites, 2 wells in Cretaceous volcanics, 4 wells in Cretaceous sedimentary rocks and one well in Pre-Cambrian gneiss. The results show that specific capacity of II wells increased about 7% to 366%, while a well in Cretaceous sedimentary rock decreased about 43.4% owing to plugging of fault clay. Meanwhile, impact distances influenced due to hydrofracturing ranged from 5.4 m to 82.7 m from the test wells, actual drawdown data measured during the pumping test after hydrofracturing are more or less decreased and reveals balanced drawdown.

  • The paper presents a case study of a limestone quarry of the Philippines, where major problems in terms of improper fragmentation, poor wall control, and poor heave of the muck pile were witnessed. The paper highlights the significant role of switching over from diagonal firing pattern to V-type firing pattern, and also of making suitable adjustments in the stemming column length for improved confinement and gas retention. The study revealed that by making aforesaid design modifications in the blast round, marked improvement in blasting results was registered. Looking at the results, it was further contemplated to expand the mesh area in the subsequent blast rounds. The mesh area was incremented from the existing $8.96m^2$ to $12m^2$. The results were meticulously registered in the field, and clearly depicted definite improvements in the blast results in terms of increased P.F., reduced boulder count, reduced FEL cycle time, reduced dozing hours and improved heave.

  • Rock fragmentation technique by cutter penetration has widely been used in the mechanical tunnel excavation. Microcracks propagate and interact because of locally concentrated high stress induced by cutter penetration. which is caused by heterogeneity of rocks. In this study Weibull distribution function and degradation index are used to consider the strength heterogeneity of a rock and the degradation of rock properties after failure. Through the numerical analyses, it is shown that the lateral pressure has an important influence on the rock fragmentation. In the single cutter penetration, large chips are formed as lateral pressure increase. The cutter spacing is also an important factor that affects the rock fragmentation in the double cutter penetration. The fragmentation efficiency of the double cutter penetration is better when cutter spacing is 70 mm than 40 mm and 100 mm. From the results, it is expected that this study can be applied to a TBM tunnel design by understanding of chipping process and mechanism of rock due to cutter penetration.

  • In order to analyze the influence of particle bonding and crushing on the characteristics of shear behavior, especially residual shear behavior of granular soil, ring shear test was simulated by using DEM(Discrete Element Method)-based software program PFC(Particle Flow Code). Total four models including two non-crushing models and two crushing models were created in this study by using clump or cluster model built in PFC. The applicability of Lobo-crushing model proposed by Lobo-Guerrero and Vallejo(2005) was investigated. In addition, the results of ring shear test were analyzed and compared with those of direct shear test. The results showed that the modelling of ring shear test should be conducted to investigate the residual shear behavior. The Lobo-crushing model cannot be applied to investigate the residual shear strength. Finally, it can be concluded that the numerical models excluding Lobo-crushing model suggested in this study can be used extensively for other studies concerning the residual shear behavior of granular soil including soil crushing.

  • Already, vari-stem, gas-bag, power deck, air ball etc. are used by various blasting methods to take the advantage of air decking technology in abroad. Air tube product has been used continuously in domestic and air ball product was made recently. In the case study, we analyzed about the application and the effect or air deck blasting method in domestic blasting area. As results or this case study, it was shown that blasting vibration was decreased about $21{\sim}41%$ and quantities or explosives was decreased about $17{\sim}30%$. Also, in the case of using air deck blasting method, fragmentation was shown to be smaller than common blasting method.

  • Since 1990s, these many researchers have been fully involved in developing recycling methods for FRP boats. There are four basic classes of recycling covered in the literature. the first is "Mechanical recycling" which involves shredding and grinding of the scrap FRP in a new product. Despite of the safety hazards, mechanical recycling is one of the simpler and more technically proven methods. Recent researchers should be more interested in these methods. It is fact that most of FRP wastes are depended on incineration or reclamation. Because it Is made up of reinforced fiber glass, it is very difficult to break into pieces. By the disposing of waste FRP this way, it also occurs secondary problem such as air pollution and unacceptable noise. This study is to propose a new method which is efficient and environment friendly waste FRP regenerating.

  • This study was analyzed the operational cost of logging and chipping operations in order to develop the efficient logging operation system for the utilization of forest-biomass. Analysis of the operational cost of logging operation systems, the operation system D which include chain saw, tower-yarder, mini-forwarder and truck was calculated the lowest cost to be $68,498Won/m^3$. In the utilization of forest-biomass, the operation system E which include chipping by mini-chipper at the site, forwarding of chips by mini-forwarder, transportation of chips by truck was estimated to be 90,770 Won/Ton. Thus, These results are determined as an effective operating system for logging operation and the utilization of forest-biomass.

  • Since early in the 90's, the need for construction of underground rock structures such as long and large section traffic tunnel, energy storage cavern, industrial facility, etc. has been largely increased because the Korean territory is not wide and about 65 % of the land consists of mountainous region. The initial rock stress measurement has been widely conducted to provide the quantitative information on the stress state of engineering site at the design stage of underground rock structures. Among the diverse methods developed for measuring rock stress, hydraulic fracturing test is most popularly used because it is applicable at pre-construction stage and has no limit in testing depth. In this paper, the characteristics of initial rock stress state in mountainous region were studied on the basis of the in-situ hydraulic fracturing stress measurement results from the 60 test boreholes in various parts of Korea.
