The experimental and numerical investigations on the failure characteristics of the secondary bonded composite single-lap joints were performed. The initiations and growths of cracks were observed using CCD camera and acoustic emission sensor during the tension tests of the joint specimens. The structural behaviors of the specimens were predicted by the geometric nonlinear two-dimensional finite element analysis. The three types of observed initial cracks were included in each finite element models and the strain energy release rates of each specimen models were calculated by VCCT(Virtual Crack Closure Technique) technique. The tension tests showed that the initial cracks occurred in the 60∼90% of final failure loads and the major failure modes of the specimens were adhesive failure and the delamination between the 1st and 2nd ply of laminate. The specimens with the thicker bondline had earlier crack initiation loads but higher crack propagation resistance and eventually better loading capability. The delaminations were mostly observed in the thicker bondline specimens. The mode I values of calculated strain energy release rates were higher than the mode II values in the all specimen models considering the three types of initial cracks. The mode I and total strain energy release rates were calculated as higher values in the order of initial crack in the edge interface, comer interface and delamination between the plies of laminate.

In this paper, the experimental study and finite elements analysis were conducted on homogeneous and dissimilar metals single lap-shear bonded joints to investigate the factor that affect the joint failure load. It was found that factors which have the significant effects on the failure load of the joint was stiffness of the adherends. And from experimental results, it can be confirmed that the failure load increases linearly with overlap length increases. And the failure load of dissimilar metal joints is approximately 1KN(10~17%) larger than homogeneous metal joints. In order to confirm this phenomenon, the stress distribution and strain distribution of the specimens were analyzed through the finite element analysis. The difference between homogeneous metals joints and dissimilar metals joints is that stress and strain in adhesive are concentrated at the end of the overlap zone close to aluminium which has lower rigidity than aluminium in case of dissimilar metals joints. From high rigidity of steel, the stress concentration in bonds are decreased and it cause increase of the failure strength at dissimilar metal joints.
To evaluate the flexural deformation and strength of composite motor case above the glass transition temperature$(T_g),\;170^{\circ}C$, of resin material, a finite element analysis(FEA) model in which material non-linearity and progressive failure mode were considered was proposed. The laminated flexural specimens which have the same lay-up and thickness as the composite motor case were tested by 4-point bending test to verify the validity of FEA model. Also. mechanical properties in high temperature were evaluated to obtain the input values for FEA. Because the material properties related to resin material were highly deteriorated in the temperature range beyond $T_g$, the flexural stiffness and strength of laminated flexural specimen in $200^{\circ}C$ were degraded by also $70\%\;and\;80\%$ in comparison with normal temperature results. Above $T_g$, the failure mode was changed from progressive failure mode initiated by matrix cracking at $90^{\circ}$ ply in bottom side and terminated by delamination at the center line of specimen to fiber compressive breakage mode at top side. From stress analysis, the progressive failure mechanism was well verified and the predicted bending stiffness and strength showed a good agreement with the test results.

This study focuses on the determination of the fracture mode in composite laminates using deep learning. With the increase in the use of laminated composites in numerous engineering applications, the insurance of their integrity and performance is of paramount importance. However, owing to the complex nature of these materials, the identification of fracture modes is often a tedious and time-consuming task that requires critical domain knowledge. Therefore, to alleviate these issues, this study aims to utilize modern artificial intelligence technology to automate the fractographic analysis of laminated composites. To accomplish this goal, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images of fractured tensile test specimens are obtained from laminated composites to showcase various fracture modes. These SEM images are then categorized based on numerous fracture modes, including fiber breakage, fiber pull-out, mix-mode fracture, matrix brittle fracture, and matrix ductile fracture. Next, the collective data for all classes are divided into train, test, and validation datasets. Two state-of-the-art, deep learning-based pre-trained models, namely, DenseNet and GoogleNet, are trained to learn the discriminative features for each fracture mode. The DenseNet models shows training and testing accuracies of 94.01% and 75.49%, respectively, whereas those of the GoogleNet model are 84.55% and 54.48%, respectively. The trained deep learning models are then validated on unseen validation datasets. This validation demonstrates that the DenseNet model, owing to its deeper architecture, can extract high-quality features, resulting in 84.44% validation accuracy. This value is 36.84% higher than that of the GoogleNet model. Hence, these results affirm that the DenseNet model is effective in performing fractographic analyses of laminated composites by predicting fracture modes with high precision.

The joints are often the weakest areas in composite structures. In this paper, the thick aluminum-aluminum joint specimens and thick composite-aluminum single lap adhesive joint specimens were manufactured and the tensile tests were performed. The fracture mode of each specimen was investigated and the modified damage zone theory based on the yield strain was proposed and compared with experimental failure load of each mode. The failure loads of the thick aluminum-aluminum joint and composite-aluminum joint were predicted by the same failure criterion and they could be predicted to within 19.3% using the damage zone ratio method for all 14 cases investigated.
This paper studied the AE(acoustic emission) characteristics of the laminated composite structures. The composite stiffened panels under the compressive loading emitted various AE signals when they buckled or changed the buckling modes. In addition, the failure initiated and propagation generated a lot of complex signals. From the continuous signal generation. we identified when the failures initiated and whether they propagated or not. The single lap joint of laminated plates under tensional load also generated AE signals when bonding region failed. The first failure occurrence and its propagation are monitored by generated AE signals. The characteristics of AE signals used in this analysis are cumulative hits, hit distribution, peak frequency of generated AE waveform and amplitude of signals. The analysis of AE signals shows that continuous increment of cumulative hits can be regarded as damage propagation and three dominant peak frequencies can correspond to typical failure modes in the laminated composites.

Two reliability models, AFDA(Approximate Full Distribution Approach) and Monte-Carlo simulation method, are directly developed to study on both hydraulic failure mode of berm recession and structural failure mode of armour breakage of berm breakwaters. By comparing the present results with the results of other researcher, it may be confirmed that two reliability models can be straightforwardly applicable to berm breakwaters. Relative influence of each random variable on hydraulic and structural failure probabilities could be properly analyzed. The upper bound and the lower bound of failure probability can be evaluated by using bi-modal bounds of the multiple failure mode analysis, from which it may be possible to investigate some kinds of dependence into between two failure modes. Finally, it may also be found that the structural failure mode of armour breakage could become a main failure mode of berm breakwaters in the condition of more than any allowable berm recession.

This paper presents development and verification of the progressive failure analysis upon the composite laminates. Strength and stiffness of the fiber-reinforced composite are analyzed by property degradation approach with emphasis on the material nonlinearity and continuum damage mechanics (CDM). Longitudinal and transverse tensile modes derived from Hashin's failure criterion are used to predict the thresholds for damage initiation and growth. The modified Newton-Raphson iterative procedure is implemented for determining nonlinear elastic and viscoelastic constitutive relations. Laminar properties of the composite are obtained by experiments. Prediction on the un-notched tensile (UNT) specimen is performed under the laminate level. Stress-strain curves and strength results are compared with the experimental measurement. It is concluded that the present nonlinear CDM approach is capable of predicting the strength and stiffness more accurately than the corresponding linear CDM one does.

In this paper, the bearing strengths and fracture behaviors of the pin-jointed carbon fiber/epoxy composites were investigated through pin loading test. The composites were fabricated by a filament winding process, and two types of laminated patterns were considered. According to the results, type 1 pattern revealed a net-tension failure mode, whereas type 2 pattern exhibited a bearing failure mode. Also, acoustic emission energy of the type 2 pattern was higher than that of the type 1 pattern. Therefore, the type 2 pattern was found to be structurally safer than the type 1 pattern.

In this paper, progressive failure analysis is performed on composite joints widely used in various industries such as the aerospace industry. The analysis was conducted on single bolted joints to confirm its reliability and in succession on double-bolted composite joints as well to study the characteristics of progressive failure. Hashin failure criteria and EGDM (energy based gradual degradation model) were used for the analysis. Failure variables are defined by four failure modes, respectively. According to the variables, stiffness degradation has been calculated. As a result of comparing the test and analysis results of single-bolted joints, the error was below 5% and it showed that the analytical results are rather credible. Also, the parametric analysis consequences were obtained conducting the process-progressive failure analysis on the double-bolted composite joints considering edge-distance ratio (e/d ratio) and bolt spacing.
