The wave load and its influence on the response of offshore structure have been well investigated through the statistical approach based on the linear theory. The linear approach has a limitation to apply the extreme condition such as extreme wave, which corresponds to extreme value of wave spectrum. The main topic of present study is to develop an efficient numerical method to predict wave load induced by extreme wave. As a numerical method, finite element method based on variational principle is adopted. The frequency-focusing method is applied to generate the extreme wave in the numerical wave tank. The wave load on the bottom mounted vertical cylinder is investigated. The hydroelastic response of the vertical cylinder is also investigated so as to compare the wave loads with the rigid body case in the extreme wave condition.

Shiro-abhyanga is one of treatments of Ayurveda, which is the ancient system of health care and medicine in India. In this essay, I examined the effect of Shiro-abhyanga for relaxing stress of women in twentieth by the means of the brain wave test. The brain wave test showed that Shiro-abhyanga reduced Delta and Theta waves of the left brain but increased $\alpha$, SMR, Low-$\beta$ waves of the right brain. Delta and Theta waves are usually found in sleeping time. Their high measurement in awakening instructs the stress and depressing situations of objects. However the treatment of Shiro-abhyanga made the decrease of Delta and Theta waves and the increase of Alpha wave in working time. Alpha wave appears while objects are comfortable and peaceful from the relaxation of body and mind. Therefore the growth of Alpha wave says that the treatment of Shiro-abhyanga has an effect on mitigation of stress.

This study investigates the characteristics of stem waves along a vertical wall generated by obliquely incident random waves through laboratory experiments conducted in a wave basin and numerical simulations using REF/DIF S model developed by Kirby and $\ddot{O}zkan$(1994). The investigation is focused on the effect of random waves on the propagation characteristics of stem waves and the difference or similarity between monochromatic and random waves. The results of REF/DIF S model are compared with laboratory measurements and good agreements are obtained. The relative significant wave height along a wall is almost same with monochromatic condition, but the wave pattern along normal to the wall shows a significant difference.

In this study, a fundamental-level study was performed to establish knowledge-base for the development of optimal surface-wave method for urban areas with adjacent structures. First, theoretical modelling was performed to investigate the influence of adjacent structures on dispersion characteristics of surface waves. Later, the geotechnical sites with a concrete model of adjacent structure and a real subway box structure were tested by surface-wave method to investigate the influence of adjacent structures. The major influencing factors of adjacent structures on surface-wave propagation were direct distance between measurement array and adjacent structure, stiffness contrast between layers and type of seismic source.

In current design practice, the shear wave velocity (Vs) of the core and rock-fill zone of a dam, one of the characteristics essential for seismic response design, is seldom determined by field tests. This is because the borehole seismic method is often restricted in application, due to stabilisation activities and concern for the security of the dam structure, and surface wave methods are limited by unfavourable in-situ site conditions. Consequently, seismic response design for a dam may be performed using Vs values that are assumed, or empirically determined. To estimate Vs for the core and rock-fill zone, and to find a reliable method for measuring Vs, seismic surface wave methods have been applied on the crest and sloping surface of the existing 'M' dam. Numerical analysis was also performed to verify the applicability of the surface wave method to a rock-fill dam. Through this numerical analysis and comparison with other test results, the applicability of the surface wave method to rock-fill dams was verified.

In order to understand the mechanism of the cross-shore evolution of storm (barred) and normal (nonbarred) profiles of a sandy beach, the vertically two-dimensional laboratory experiment was performed with a movable bed. The beach profiles and free surface motion were measured under monochromatic wave conditions evolving the storm and normal beach profiles. The observation was conducted in the surf zone during the alternation of the two wave conditions to reach its quasi-equilibrium state. The sandbar-crest and trough and the steep berm were evolved due to the plunging breakers in the storm case, and the bar-trough was decayed due to the spilling breakers in the normal case. From the measurements, it was found that the storm wave case was in an erosion state and the normal wave case was in an accretion state. The strong undertow, which is a dominant factor of the offshore migration mechanism, was developed in the storm wave case, and the weak undertow was developed in the normal wave case. The skewness and the asymmetry of the nonlinear wave motion, which is a dominant factor of the onshore migration mechanism, was measured similarly in both cases.

In recent years two reflection methods, i.e. GPR and seismic Impact-Echo, are usually performed to obtain the information about tunnel lining structures composed of concrete lining, shotcrete, water barrier, and voids at the back of lining. However, they do not lead to a desirable resolution sufficient for the inspection of tunnel safety, due to many problems of interest including primarily (1) inner thin layers of lining structure itself in comparison with the wavelength of source wavelets, (2) dominant unwanted surface wave arrivals, (3) inadequate measuring strategy. In this sense, seismic physical modeling is a useful tool, with the use of the full information about the known physical model, to handle such problems, especially to study problems of wave propagation in such fine structures that are not amenable to theory and field works as well. Thus, this paper deals with various results of seismic physical modeling to enable to show a possibility of detecting the inner layer boundaries of tunnel lining structures. To this end, a physical model analogous to a lining structure was built up, measured and processed in the same way as performed in regular reflection surveys. The evaluated seismic section gives a clear picture of the lining structure, that will open up more consistent direction of research into the development of an efficient measuring and processing technology.

Various elastic wave-based site investigation methods have been used to characterize subsurface ground because the dynamic properties can be correlated with various geotechnical parameters. Although the inherent spatial variability of the geotechnical parameters affects the P-wave propagation characteristics, ground heterogeneity has not been considered as an influential factor. Thus, the effect of heterogeneous ground on the travel-time shift and wavefront characteristics of elastic waves through stochastic numerical analyses is investigated in this study. The effects of the relative correlation lengths and relative propagation distances on the travel-time shift of P-waves considering various intensities of ground heterogeneity were investigated. Heterogeneous ground fields of stiffness (e.g., the coefficient of variation = 10 ~ 40%) were repeatedly realized in numerical finite difference grids using the turning band method. Monte Carlo simulations were undertaken to simulate P-wave propagation in heterogeneous ground using a finite difference method-based numerical approach. The results show that the disturbance of the wavefront becomes more significant with stronger heterogeneity and induces travel-time delays. The relative correlation lengths and propagation distances are systematically related to the travel-time shift.
Urban conditions, such as existing underground facilities and ambient noise due to cultural activity, restrict the general application of conventional geophysical techniques. At a tunnelling site in an urban area along an existing railroad, we used the refraction microtremor (REMI) technique (Louie, 2001) as an alternative way to get geotechnical information. The REMI method uses ambient noise recorded by standard refraction equipment and a linear geophone array to derive a shear-wave velocity profile. In the inversion procedure, the Rayleigh wave dispersion curve is picked from a wavefield transformation, and iteratively modelled to get the S-wave velocity structure. The REMI survey was carried out along the line of the planned railway tunnel. At this site vibrations from trains and cars provided strong seismic sources that allowed REMI to be very effective. The objective of the survey was to evaluate the rock mass rating (RMR), using shear-wave velocity information from REMI. First, the relation between uniaxial compressive strength, which is a component of the RMR, and shear-wave velocity from laboratory tests was studied to learn whether shear-wave velocity and RMR are closely related. Then Suspension PS (SPS) logging was performed in selected boreholes along the profile, in order to draw out the quantitative relation between the shear-wave velocity from SPS logging and the RMR determined from inspection of core from the same boreholes. In these tests, shear-wave velocity showed fairly good correlation with RMR. A good relation between shear-wave velocity from REMI and RMR could be obtained, so it is possible to estimate the RMR of the entire profile for use in design of the underground tunnel.

This paper introduces the nonlinear Stream Function Wave Theory for design waves efficiently to compute the wave energy and energy transport quantities and to analyze the effects of nonlinearities on them. The Stream Function Wave Theory was developed by Dean for case of the observed waves with assymmetric wave profiles and of the design waves with symmetric theoretical wave profiles. Dalrymple later improved the computational procedure by adding two Lagrangian constraints so that more efficient convergence of the iterative numerical method to a specified wave height and to a zero mean free surface displacement resulted. And the Stream Function coefficients are computed numerically by the improved Marquardt algorithm developed for this study. As the result of this study the effects of nonlinearities on the wave quantities of the average potential energy density, the average kinetic energy density result in overestimation by linear wave theory compared to the Stream Function Wave Theory and increase monotonically with decreasing $L^*/L_O$ and with increasing $H/H_B$. The effects of nonlinearities on the group velocity and the wavelength quantities result in underestimation by linear wave theory and increase monotonically with increasing $H/H_B$. Finally the effect of nonlinearity on the average total energy flux results in overestimation for shallow water waves and underestimation for deep water waves by linear wave theory.
