Various types of FRP materials have been applied for structural strengthening of RC beams in various forms. When CFRP plates are used, a premature failure used to occur before enough strengthening effect appears. This is primarily due to the rip-off of CFRP Plate attached on RC beams. Despite of numerous studies on the rip-off failure of externally strengthened RC beams, its failure mechanism is not definitely clarified yet. Investigations from literatures have shown that the rip-off failure is dependant on the vertical and shear stresses at the level of main reinforcements in RC beams. This study suggests an analytical model to Investigate the rip-off failure load based on the stress states at the level of main reinforcements. The proposed model is relatively simple and produces very comparable results to the test data. It is believed that the proposed model can be successfully used to provide more information on the rip-off failure mechanisms and its prevention.
Cement composites subjected to high-velocity projectile shows local failure and it can be suppressed by improvement of flexural toughness with reinforcement of fiber. Therefore, researches on impact resistance performance of cement composites are in progress and a number of types of fiber reinforcement are being developed. Since bonding properties of fiber with matrix, specific surface area and numbers of fiber are different by fiber reinforcement type, mechanical properties of fiber reinforced cement composites and improvement of impact resistance performance need to be considered. In this study, improvement of flexural toughness and failure reduction effect by impact of high-velocity projectile have been evaluated according to fiber type by mixing steel fiber, polyamide, nylon and polyethylene which are have different shape and mechanical properties. As results, flexural toughness was improved by redistribution of stress and crack prevention with bridge effect of reinforced fibers, and scabbing by high-velocity impact was suppressed. Since it is possible to decrease scabbing limit thickness from impact energy, thickness can be thinner when it is applied to protection. Scabbing of steel fiber reinforced cement composites was occurred and it was observed that desquamation of partial fragment was suppressed by adhesion between fiber and matrix. Scabbing by high-velocity impact of synthetic fiber reinforced cement composites was decreased by microcrack, impact wave neutralization and energy dispersion with a large number of fibers.

Nowadays, the construction of tunnels with a shallow depth drastically in urban areas increases. But the effect of sidewall displacement in shallow tunnel on its behavior is not well known yet. Most studies on the shallow tunnel have been limited to the stability and the failure of the tunnel and the adjacent ground in plane strain state. Therefore, the model tests were conducted in a model ground which was built with carbon rods, in order to investigate the impact of the tunnel sidewall displacement on the lateral load transfer to the adjacent ground. The lateral displacement of the tunnel sidewall and the load transfered to the adjacent ground were measured in model tests for various overburdens (0.50D, 0.75D, 1.00D, 1.25D). As results, if the cover depth of tunnel was over a constant depth (0.75D) in a shallow tunnel, the tunnel sidewall was failed with a constant shape not depending on the tunnel cover depth and also not affected by the opposite side of the wall. But, if the cover depth of tunnel was under a constant depth (0.75D), the failure of the tunnel sidewall could affect the opposite sidewall. In addition, if the displacement of tunnel sidewall with 50% of the critical displacement occurred, the tunnel failure was found to be at least 75%. However, additional studies are deemed necessary, since they may differ depending on the ground conditions.
Recently, with the development of high-performance processing devices such as GPGPU, a three-dimensional dynamic analysis technique that can replace expensive rock material impact tests has been actively developed in the defense and aerospace fields. Experimentally observing or measuring fracture processes occurring in rocks subjected to high impact loads, such as blasting and earth penetration of small-diameter missiles, are difficult due to the inhomogeneity and opacity of rock materials. In this study, a three-dimensional dynamic fracture process analysis technique (3D-DFPA) was developed to simulate the fracture behavior of rocks due to impact. In order to improve the operation speed, an algorithm capable of GPGPU operation was developed for explicit analysis and contact element search. To verify the proposed dynamic fracture process analysis technique, the dynamic fracture toughness tests of the Straight Notched Disk Bending (SNDB) limestone samples were simulated and the propagation of the reflection and transmission of the stress waves at the rock-impact bar interfaces and the fracture process of the rock samples were compared. The dynamic load tests for the SNDB sample applied a Pulse Shape controlled Split Hopkinson presure bar (PS-SHPB) that can control the waveform of the incident stress wave, the stress state, and the fracture process of the rock models were analyzed with experimental results.

It has been reported that the failure of Carsington Dam in Eng1and occured due to the existence of a thin yellow clay layer which was not identified during the design work, and due to pre-existing shears of the clay layer. The slope stability analyses during the design work, which utilized traditional circular arc type failure method and neglected the existence of the clay layer, showed a safety factor of 1.4. However, the post-failure analyses which utilized translational failure mode considering the clay layer and the pre-existing shear deformation revealed the reduction of safety factor to unity. The post-failure analysis assumed 10。 inclination of the horizontal forces onto each slice based on the results of finite element analyses. In this paper, Bishop's simplified method, Janbu method, and Morgenstern-Price method were used for the comparison of both circular and translational failure analysis methods. The effects of the pre-existing shears and subsquent movement were also considered by varying the soil strength parameters and the pore pressure ratio according to the given soi1 parameters. The results showed factor of safefy 1.387 by Bishop's simplified method(STABL) which assumed circular arc failure surface and disregarding yellow clay layer and pre-failure material properties. Also the results showed factor of safety 1.093 by Janbu method(STABL) and 0.969 by Morgenstern-Price method(MALE) which assumed wedge failure surface and considerd yellow clay layer using post failure material properties. In addition, dam behavior was simulated by Cam-Clay model FEM program. The effects of pore pressure changes with loading and consolidation, and strength reduction near or at failure were also considered based on properly assumed stress-strain relationship and pore pressure characteristics. The results showed that the failure was initiated at the yellow clay layer and propagated through other zones by showing that stress and displacement were concentrated at the yel1ow clay layer.
The purpose of this study is to investigate the shear strengthening effectiveness of the beams strengthened with near surface mounted (NSM) and external bonded (EB) CFRP strips. A total of nine concrete beams were made and tested. From this study, it was found that the shear stiffness and strength of the beams strengthened with NSM and EB strips were significantly improved compared to the control beam. Failure of the beam strengthened with NSM and EB strips was initiated by shear cracks, propagated diagonally to the adjacent epoxy grooves without crossing the epoxy and finally sudden diagonal crack connecting the point of application of load and flexural crack was occurred. For the beam strengthened combined with NSM and EB CFRP strips, the tensile strains in the NSM CFRP strips were observed in the range of 0.35% to 0.45% and strains with EB strips were measured about 0.3%.

Recently, in retrofit of RC structures using FRP (Fiber Reinforced Polymer), researches about Near-Surface-Mounted Rertofit (NSMR) method have been widely performed. In NSMR, FRP bar is normally inserted in the slit formed in the cover concrete and then bonded by using epoxy mortar. In this paper, the bond characteristic of NSMR using FRP plate instead of bar was studied experimentally. Fracture behavior is observed from bond test using the parameters of embedment length, shear key, and FRP plate layer. In addition, an equation to predict the splitting strength of NSMR using FRP is proposed using the test result. The results showed that when the longer embedment length and more layers of FRP are used, the higher bond strength is achieved. There was a good co-relationship between the test and calculated results using the proposed equation.
This research is intended to investigate the behavior of the jointed rock under various loading conditions: static or dynamic load. The distributed state concept (DSC) is based on the idea that the response of the joint can be related to and expressed as the response of the reference states : relative intact (RI) and fully adjusted (FA) states. In the DSC, an initially RI joint modifies continuously through a process of natural self-adjustment, and a part of it approaches the FA state at randomly disturbed locations in the joint areas. In this study, based on the DSC concept, RI state, FA state, and disturbance function (D) are defined for characterizing the behavior of rock joint. From the results of this research, it can be stated that DSC model is capable of capturing the physical behavior of jointed rock such as softening and hardening and considering the size of joint and roughness of joint surface.
The Compact Tension (CT) type test was performed in order to evaluate the fracture toughness performance of glass fiber-reinforced laminated timber. Glass fiber textile and sheet Glass fiber reinforced plastic were used as reinforcement. The reinforced laminated timber was formed by inserting and laminating the reinforcement between laminated woods. Compact tension samples are produced under ASTM D5045. The sample length was determined by taking account of the end distance of 7D, and bolt holes (12 mm, 16 mm, 20 mm) had been made at the end of artificial notches in advance. The fracture toughness load of sheet fiberglass reinforced plastic reinforced laminated timber was increased 33 % in comparison to unreinforced laminated timber while the glass fiber textile reinforced laminated timber was increased 152 %. According to Double Cantilever Beam theory, the stress intensity factor was 1.08~1.38 for sheet glass fiber reinforced plastic reinforced laminated timber and 1.38~1.86 for glass fiber textile reinforced laminated timber, respectively. That was because, for the glass fiber textile reinforced laminated timber, the fiber array direction of glass fiber and laminated wood orthogonal to each other suppressed the split propagation in the wood.
Sliding aspects of rock slope, where large-scaled tension cracks are induced during preliminary excavation, have been analyzed. Structure of rock mass is investigated by performing the electrical resistivity survey and the orientations and positions of discontinuities are measured from DOM-drilled core log. Geological evidence far primary failure movement has been detected and clay minerals which possess swelling properties are identified through XRD analysis. Slope stability is examined by considering the orientations of discontinuities and their trace distributions on the cut-face and neighboring natural slope surface. Both orientations and positions of failure-invoking discontinuity planes, traces of which are exposed within the anticipated sliding region, are concerned fur analyzing the preferred sliding directions. Regional sliding vectors are assessed based on the relative positions of potential sliding planes in the boreholes and the general trend of anticipated failure movement of rock slope is also investigated.
