As corporate management enters the era of informatization or knowledge management, the level of patent quality, which is the fruit of R&D and technical innovation, is an important element of corporate competitiveness in this age of unbridled competition. This study analyzes the relevance between R&D stocks and 6 types of knowledge stock (patent quality) and corporate market values in utilization of related research models. With Tobin Q model utilized, 108,851 U.S. patents (observed value per year: 2,795) registered by 402 domestic enterprises were analyzed. As the Hall model was analyzed, it turned out that the R&D stock/asset, claim stock/patent stock, and citation stock/patent stock had positive effect on corporate market values. The inventor stock/patent stock also show positive effect on corporate market values.

This paper aims to contribute to estimating the value of a patent by explaining the unobservable attributes of patent quality using observable patent citation indices. The paper first constructs patent citation data and identifies firm, university, and research institute among assignees, and then tries to explain attributes of patent quality using backward citation indices. Backward citation indices carrying information about technological sources which a given patent is based on turn out to be good predictors of forward citation indices carrying information about attributes of patent quality. Finding the functional relationships between attributes of patent quality and backward citations will lead to the improved estimation and prediction of patent value. It is found out that backward citation indices are strongly correlated the technological diversity of a patent. The paper also suggests that with whom an organization chooses to collaborate affects the attributes of patent quality.

The number of citations in a patent is one of the indicators of the qualitative value of a patent. In this study, negative binomial regression model analysis was performed focusing on 47,354 US patents of 14 global top automotive makers in order to examine the major factors affecting the number of patent citations. As a result of the review, it was found that, elapsed years since filing, the number of patent claims, the number of claim letters, the number of inventors, the number of patent family countries, and the number of patent families, as well as IPC diversity, had a positive and significant effect on the number of citations. The results of this study are expected to provide a basic basis for considering the IPC diversity index together in analyzing and evaluating future patents and establishing strategies for creating excellent patents.

Recently, the industrial paradigm shift to the fourth industry has already begun, and the importance of patents as intangible intellectual property in the fourth industry era is increasing day by day. Since the technical valuation of a patent is calculated according to the opinion of experts, it is costly and time consuming, and hence, the quality of the patent is judged based on subjective opinions of non-experts. Therefore, it is necessary to develop an objective and rational evaluation system for the qualitative level of patents. In this paper, we classify the valuation of patents into technicality, rights, and usability, and consider the quantitative and objective evaluation modeling of patents using Bayesian structural equation model. In particular, based on the data collected by the Korea Invention Promotion Association, we apply the Bayesian approach, which is capable of stable modeling even under small samples by using prior information, and the structural equation model, which is excellent for modeling and evaluating qualitative performance that is difficult to measure directly, to develop a patent evaluation model.

미래의 기업 환경은 유형 자산으로서의 물질적인 자산보다는 지적재산권 등의 무형 자산에 대한 중요성이 더욱 강조될 것이다. 지적재산권 중 특허의 가치를 통하여 기업의 성과가 변화함을 보인 많은 선진국의 사례 연구-Machluo(1958)으로부터 시작하여 Mansfield(1965), Beck. R(1976), Parker. J(1978), Rosegger. G(1980), Scherer. F(1980) 등 1990년 이후는 무수히 많음-는 미래 기업 경쟁력이 질적 가치가 우수한 특허를 얼마나 보유하고 이를 얼마나 효율적으로 관리하는가에 달려있음을 보여주고 있다. 본 연구는 국내 화학기업의 특허관리 유형을 5가지 특허 지표들-국내특허출원건수(relative patent applications), 국내특허등록건수(patent granted), 유효특허건수 (valid patents), 집중도(concentration of patents in subclass), 국제특허출원건수(overall international patent applications)-을 통하여 구분하였으며, 이들 변수를 가지고 군집화 하였을 때 각각에 해당하는 클러스터에서 기업성과에 차이가 나타나는지 알아보았다. 본 연구에서 특허를 기업성과와 관련시켜 설명한 점은 기술혁신 능력 내지는 기술경쟁력을 측정하는 척도로서 특허를 바라본 것이며, 특허의 전략적 관리와 활용이 독점적 시장 우위의 확립과 경제적 성과 향상, 통합적인 경쟁력 강화 측면에서 기업의 성공을 가져올 것으로 보기 때문이다.

In previous research, large companies were analyzed to focus on their past management performance and patent rights, but in this study we looked at the variability in future sales of small and medium-sized enterprises with patents through empirical analysis. We looked at how the quantitative and qualitative value of patent rights affect management performance of company. We used 'the number of patents' as the quantitative value of patents, 'the average score of patents' as the qualitative value of patents, and the average sales growth rate as the management performance of company. Through a discriminant analysis using the statistical program SPSS, both independent variables used in this study were significant for distinguishing between companies with an average growth in sales more than twice that of general small and medium-sized enterprises and those with less than twice the average sales growth rate. Therefore it is meaningful to provide stakeholders with an analysis framework on how sales will change in the future using the results of this study during guarantee or loan screening for small and medium-sized enterprises with patent rights.

대한민국은 지식재산권 보유규모만을 한정하면 세계 어디에도 손색이 없는 수준의 지식재산 강국이 되었다. 그러나 세계 4위의 지식재산 보유 강국이면서도, 지식재산권의 활용이나 보호 측면에서는 여전히 많은 노력이 필요한 것이 현실이다. 최근의 지식재산권 통계자료에 의하면, 특허출원 증가율에 있어 대기업은 연평균 18.2%, 중소기업은 2.7%로 중소기업이 대기업에 비해 정체되어 있고, 더욱이 우리나라의 특허활용도는 세계 21위 수준(IMD 경쟁력보고서)이고 보면 지식재산의 보유 양에 비하여 질적 수준이 낮아 가치 창출에 미흡한 편이다. 더욱이 경기침체로 국내 대기업을 비롯한 세계 굴지의 기업들이 생존경쟁과 특허 선점을 위한 글로벌 특허전쟁을 벌이는 가운데 국내 중소벤처기업은 부족한 자금과 인력풀 속에 온갖 특허분쟁에 시달리고 있는 실정이다. 이러한 상황에서 단순히 물건을 잘 만들어 잘 판매하는 것만으로는 험난한 글로벌 특허 전쟁에서 살아남을 수 없다. 지금껏 개발하여 잘 판매하고 있는데 느닷없이 관련된 권리를 가지고 판매 및 생산을 중지시키고, 수출을 위해 선적해둔 물건을 압류해 버리는 일이 종종 발생되고 있기 때문이다. 따라서 자신의 지식재산권을 지키고 다른 이의 지식재산권을 침해하지 않도록 조심하고, 문제가 생겼을 경우 적절히 대응하는 것은 물건을 잘 만들고, 잘 판매하는 것만큼 대단히 중요하며 어쩌면 큰 수익을 낼 수 있는 투자이기도 하므로, 최근 빈번한 지식재산권 분쟁 대처사항을 점검해 보자.

Although domestic research funding organizations require patented technologies as an outcome of financial aids, they have much difficulty in evaluating qualitative value of the patented technology due to lack of systematic methods. Especially, because citation data is not essential to patent application in Korea, it is very difficult to evaluate a patent using the incomplete citation data. This study proposes a method for evaluating technology importance of a patent when there is no or insufficient citation data in patents. The technology importance of a patent can be evaluated objectively and quantitatively by the proposed method which consists of 5 steps such as selection of a target patent, collection of related patents, preparation of key word vector, clustering patents, and technological importance assessment. The method was applied to a patent on 'user identification method for payment using mobile terminal' in order to evaluate technology importance and demonstrate how the method works.

Patent data have both properties of technological and industrial information. They satisfy explicit requirements for originality, technological validity, and commercial value. They comprise all fields of innovation for a long period of time. They show their own qualitative importance by forward citation of them. In this paper, we attempt to establish and apply an analytical model and process based on informetric approach using patent information in order to predict emerging technologies which have the possibility of industrial development in the future.

As more and more patents for new technology are issued, companies and organizations are interested in managing patents systematically so that the patents should be a valuable asset rather than burden. In this study we propose the method to select superior patents effectively using QFD. First, what firms want in the patents that have long been accumulated is identified and appropriate patent indices are derived to illustrate how the firm's requirements are satisfied. Then the importance of firm's requirements and their relationship with patent indices are determined through AHP's pairwise comparison. Finally, the results are analyzed and demonstrated with the case of a real company, which shows that patents are sorted out well according to the firm's requirements.
