  • This paper predicts 6 facial regions that may have sharply different scattering properties, rendering the face more realistically based on their diffusion profiles. The scattering properties are acquired in the form of high dynamic range by photographing the pattern formed around an unit ray incident on facial skin. The acquired data are fitted to a 'linear combination of Gaussian functions', which well approximates the original diffusion profile of skin and has good characteristics as the filter. During the process, to prevent its solutions from converging into local minima, we take advantage of the genetic algorithm to set up the initial value. Each Gaussian term is applied to the irradiance map as a filter, expressing subsurface scattering effect. In this paper, to efficiently handle the maximum 12 Gaussian filterings, we make use of the parallel capacity of CUDA.

  • We report the magnetic properties, microstructures, and crystal orientations of the CrO$_2$ thin films on TiO$_2$ single crystals. CrO$_2$ thin films were deposited by thermal decompositions with CrO$_3$ source materials. The microstructure of (110) oriented CrO$_2$ thin films deposited on (110) TiO$_2$ single crystals were uniform. As the oxygen flow rates increased, the resistivity, coercive field, and remnant magnetization of the CrO$_2$ thin films on TiO$_2$ single crystals decreased.

  • The analytical diffusion model is first formulated and its characteristics are critically reviewed. The flood events during the 1986-1988 flood seasons i the IHP Pyungchang Representative Basin are routed by this model and are compared with those by the kinematic wave model. The results showed that the analytical diffusion model simulates the observed flood events much better than the analytical kinematic wave model. The present model is proven to be an excellent means of taking the backwater effect due to lateral inflow or down river stage variations into consideration in channel routing of flood flows. It also requires much less effort and computing time at a desired station compared to any other reliable flood routing methods.

  • A test section of a supersonic wind tunnel was designed for the analysis of flow characteristics over a backward-facing step with Mach 1.0 slot injection in a supersonic flow of Mach 2.5. The cavity flow of a high-speed vehicle is very complex at supersonic speed, so it is necessary to do experiments using supersonic wind tunnels to verify numerical analysis methods. The previous 2D symmetrical nozzle was replaced with an asymmetrical nozzle. The inviscid nozzle contour was designed using Method of Characteristics (MOC), and the boundary layer thickness correction was reflected by experimental data from the wind tunnel. The results were compared with a CFD analysis. The PID control system was changed to be based on the change of tank pressure. This improved the control efficiency, and the run times of supersonic flow increased by about 1 second. The flow characteristics over a backward facing step with slot injection were visualized by a Schlieren device. This equipment will be used for an experimental study of the film cooling effectiveness over a cavity with various velocities, mass flows, and temperatures.

  • Design of a shape transition nozzle is carried out as a part of building a lab-scale supersonic combustion experimental equipment. In order to connect directly the circular shaped vitiation air heater to the square shaped scramjet combustor, area change is evaluated by using the method of characteristics. Shape transition function is introduced to control the transition rate. Boundary layer correction was made through the three-dimensional computational fluid dynamics with the assessment on the several shape transition functions. The shape transition nozzle is proved minimizing the growth of boundary layer at the center of the rectangular nozzle surfaces that caused by the pressure gradient at the corners of the rectangular nozzle and the following recirculation regions.

  • A two-dimensional finite difference numerical model was developed in order to simulate two-phase fluid flow in a single fracture. In the model, variation of viscosity with pressure and that of relative permeability with water saturation can be treated. For the numerical solution, IMPES method was used, from which the pressure and the saturation of water and gas were computed one by one. Seven cases of model test using parallel plates for a single fracture were performed in order to obtain the characteristic equation of relative permeability which would be used in the numerical model. it was difficult to match the characteristic curves of relative permeability from the model tests with the existing emperical equations, consequently a logistic equation was proposed. As the equation is composed of the parameters involving aperture size, it can be applied to any fracture.

  • A hybrid finite difference method for the longitudinal dispersion equation was developed. The method is based on combining the Holly-Preissmann scheme with the fifth-degree Hermite interpolating polynomial and the generalized Crank-Nicholson scheme. Longitudinal dispersion of an instantaneously-loaded pollutant source was simulated by the model and other characteristics-based numerical methods. Computational results were compared with the exact solution. The present method was free from wiggles regardless of the Courant number, and exactly reproduced the location of the peak concentration. Overall accuracy of the computation increased for smaller value of the weighting factor, $\theta$ of the model. Larger values of $\theta$ overestimated the peak concentration. Smaller Courant number gave better accuracy, in general, but the sensitivity was very low, especially when the value of $\theta$ was small. From comparisons with the hybrid method using the third-degree interpolating polynomial and with split-operator methods, the present method showed the best performance in reproducing the exact solution as the advection becomes more dominant.

  • When calculating an intersection collision speed using a formula, it is very difficult to grasp the degree of deceleration of a vehicle after the collision unless there is road surface trace in the entire section where each vehicle moved from the point of collision to their final positions after the collision. A vehicle's motion trajectory shows an irregular curve after a collision due to the effects of inertia based on the driving characteristics of the vehicle, the eccentric force according to the collision site, and the collision speed. Therefore, it is very important to set the appropriate departure angle after a collision for accurate collision speed analysis. In this study, based on experimental collision data using a computer simulation (PC-Crash), the correlation between an appropriate vehicle departure angle and the post-collision speed was analyzed, and then, a regression analysis model was derived. Through this, we propose a method to calculate collision speed by applying only the vehicle departure angle in some types of collisions for traffic accidents at intersections.

  • The rates of infiltration contributed to the flow fo water in an unconfined aquifer under the partially penetrated stream at an ungaged station and the corresponding base flow in channel are coupled by using the hydraulic and/or hydrologic characteristics obtained from the geomorphologic and soil maps. For the determination of groundwater flow, the linearized model which is originally Boussinesq's nonlinear equation is applied in this study. Also, a stream flow routing model for base flow in channel is based on a simplification of the Saint-venant. The distributed runoff model with piecewise spatial uniformity is presented for obtaining its solution based on a finite difference technique of the kinematic wave equations. The method developed in this study was tested to the Bocheong watershed(area : $475.5km^2$) of the natural stream basin which is one of tributaries in Geum River basin in Korea. As a result, it is suggested that the rationality of hydro-graph separation according to a wide variability in hydrogeologic properties be worked out as developing the physically based subsurface model. The results of the present model are shown to be possible to simulate a base flow due to an arbitrary rate of infiltration for ungaged basins.
