In general, the durability performance of a large-sized military truck has been checked through a field durability test which required many man-hours and costs. To reduce these expenses, the durability analysis using a VTL(Virtual Test Lab) at an initial design stage was introduced recently. In this paper, the VTL with a multi-post testrig template for a large-sized truck was developed to compute the load histories transferred to cabin and chassis frame. The VTL consisted of trimmed FE models of cabin, chassis frame, and deck, dynamic models of front and rear suspensions, and a 8-post testrig template. The basic characteristics of the VTL were correlated with experimental results which had been extracted from actual driving test, modal test, and static weight test. The fatigue analysis using MSM(Modal Superposition Method) was applied to evaluate the durability performance of a large-sized military truck. From a series of analytic methods, it is shown that the fatigue analysis process using the VTL could be a useful tool to estimate the fatigue lives and weak areas of a large-sized military truck.

In this paper, the fatigue safety in the suspension bridge is investigated by using nominal and variable stress, respectively. The technique on structural modeling and the fatigue evaluation using nominal stress are mainly dealt with in this paper. To make the finite element analysis model reflecting the actual structural behavior of the suspension bridge with cross frame, the parametric study is carried out. In this study, the influence of supporting condition. the difference of the results of 2- and 3-D analysis and the number of cross frames modelled in are considered. The nominal stress under the real traffic flow of the bridge is calculated by the combination of the stresses due to the unit DB-24 loading. The nominal stresses for details under consideration are compared with allowable stress ranges specified in the codes and the results are discussed.
Structures are often subject to vehicle collision which can be accidental or terrorist attack. Previous research shows that the damage in major columns may result in progressive collapse of a whole building. This study investigates the performance of a steel column standing on a reinforced concrete footing subjected to a vehicle collision. The size and the axial load of the steel column are determined based on the assumption that it is the first story corner column in a typical three-story building with six meter span length. The finite element model of a eight-ton single unit truck provided by the NCAC (National Crash Analysis Center) is used in the numerical analysis. The finite element analysis is performed using the LS-DYNA, and the results show that the behavior of the column subjected to car impact depends largely on the column-foundation connection detail.

An experimental/analytic study has been conducted to understand the adverse effects of low vehicle speed, high axle load and high tire pressure on the performance of asphalt pavements. Of 33 asphalt sections at KHC test road, two sections having different base layer thickness (180 mm versus 280 mm) are adopted for rollover tests. During the test, a standard three-axle dump truck maintains a steady state condition as moving along the wheel path of a passing lane, and lateral offsets and real travel speed are measured with a laser-based wandering system. Test results suggest that vehicle speed affects both longitudinal and transverse strains at the bottom of asphalt layer (290 mm and 390 mm below the surface), and even slightly influences the measured vertical stresses at the top of subbase and subgrade due to the dynamic effect of rolling vehicle. Since the anisotropic nature of asphalt-aggregate mixtures, the difference between longitudinal and transverse strains appears prominent throughout the measurements. As the thickness of asphalt pavement increases, the measured lateral strains become larger than its corresponding longitudinal strains. Over the limited testing conditions, it is concluded that higher axle weight and higher tire pressures induce more strains and vertical stresses, leading to a premature deterioration of pavements. Finally, a layered elastic analysis overestimates the maximum strains measured under the 1st axle load, while underestimating the maximum vertical stress in both pavement sections.
A new procedure needs to be developed to predict the dynamic layer properties under moving truck loads. In this study, a computer code to evaluate layer moduli of asphalt concrete pavement from measured interior deflections at various depths were developed and verified from numerical model tests. Interior deflections of the pavement are measured from Multi-Depth Deflectometer(MDD). It was found that errors between the given and backcalculated moduli in numerical analysis were less than 0.32% for several numerical models tested. When impact loads were used, a technique to determine the depth to virtual rigid base was proposed through the analysis of compressive wave velocity and impulse loading durations. It was found that errors between the given and backcalculated moduli in numerical analysis were less than 0.114% when virtual rigid base was considered in numerical analysis. The pavement behavior must be evaluated under various vehicle speeds when determining the dynamic interaction between the loading vehicle and pavement system. To evaluate the dynamic behavior on asphalt concrete pavement under various vehicle speeds, truck moving tests were carried out. From the test results with respect to vehicle speed, it was found that the vehicle speed had significant effect on actual response of the pavement system. The lower vehicle speed generates the higher interior deflections, and the lower dynamic modulus.

Currently, the development of evaluation technology for vibration and shock load characteristics and spent nuclear fuel structural integrity under normal conditions of transport is being conducted in the Republic of Korea. This is the first such research conducted in the Republic of Korea and, thus, previous international studies need to be investigated and will be referred to in the ongoing project. Before 2000, several studies related to measurement of vibration and shock loads on spent nuclear fuel were conducted in the US. US national research institutes conducted uniaxial fuel assembly shaker tests, concrete block tests, and multi-axis fuel assembly tests between 2009 and 2016. In 2017, multi-modal transportation tests including road, sea, and rail transport were also performed by research institutes from the US, Spain and the Republic of Korea. Therefore, test preparation procedures, acceleration and strain measurement results, and finite-element and multi-body dynamics analysis were investigated. Based on the measured strain data, the preliminary conclusion was obtained that the measured strain was too small to cause damage to spent nuclear fuel rods. However, this conclusion is a preliminary conclusion that only reviews part of the results; a detailed review is being conducted in the US. The investigation of international studies on spent nuclear fuel structural integrity tests considering vibration and shock loads under normal conditions of transport in the US will be useful data for the project being conducted in the Republic of Korea.

This paper presents an experimental evaluation of wandering effect on asphalt concrete pavement responses. A laser-based wandering system has been developed and its performance is verified under various field conditions. The portable wandering system composed of two laser sensors with Position Sensitive Devices can allow one to measure the distance between laser sensors and tire edges of moving vehicle. Therefore, lateral position of each wheel on the pavement can be determined in a real time manner. Pavement responses due to different loading paths are investigated using a roll over test which is carried out on one of asphalt surfaced pavements in the Korea Highway Corporation test road. The pavement section (A5) consists of 5 cm thick surface course; 7 cm intermediate course; and 18 mm base course, and is heavily instrumented with strain gauges, vertical soil pressure cells and thermo-couples. From the center of wheel paths, seven equally-spaced lateral loading paths are carefully selected over an 140 cm wandering zone. Test results show that lateral horizontal strains in both surface and intermediate courses are mostly compressive right under the loading path and tensile strains start to develop as the loading offset becomes 40 cm from the wheel path. The development of the vertical stresses in the top layers of subbase and anti-frost is found to be minimal once the loading offset becomes 50 cm.
Pipes buried in around a construction site of urbanized area tend to be affected by the vibration caused by construction loads. The behaviors of buried pipes affected by periodic vibration were analyzed through numerical analyses based on existing study and experimental results. From the results of theses analyses, the serviceability of buried pipes subjected to vibration was verified. This study analyzed the pipe behaviors subjected to dump truck loads with respect to burial depths, and this research was performed as foundation study to establish standards for managing buried pipes. The analyses were performed with burial depth of 0.6, 1.2, 1.8m and vehicle velocity of 10km/h. From theses analyses, the vibration velocity and occurred stress tend to decrease as a burial depth increases.

In this study, to evaluate fatigue characteristics of developed composite bridge deck, compression fatigue test at girder support and flexural fatigue test for the 2.8m-long flexural test model were carried out. For the test specimen, DB 24 truck load was applied up to 2,000,000 cycles. In the compression fatigue test, behavior at deck tube and its bonded connection were evaluated. In the flexural fatigue test, deck behavior at mid-span and girder connection were evaluated.
The dynamic responses of highway bridges are varying depending on the features of either traveling vehicles or bridges. In this study, the probabilistic characteristics of dynamic amplification factors of highway bridges due to traveling heavy vehicles have been examined through analytical simulation processes. The truck with tandem axle and tractor with semitrailer are selected as the representative heavy vehicles, which are modeled with three dimensional 7-DOF and 12-DOF models, respectively. The analytical results have been compared with the experimental results of dynamic loading tests and the validity of the analytical models has been examined. Parametric studies on the means and extreme values of amplification factors have been performed with various traffic conditions such as vehicle types, vehicle weights, surface profiles, number of loading vehicles, loading positions, etc.
