On a basis of the materials, this study was to clarify the nutritional excellence, chemical composition, and antioxidant activity of Salicornia herbacea. From the result of this research above, it may be summed up as follows. The Salicornia herbacea used in the experiment contained the moisture and crude fiber in the stalks a lot, and the protein, fat, and ash in the branches more. As to the content of free amino acid, the content of arginine took in the branches and stems most. Then, it contained threonine, glycine, tryptophan, valine, isoleucine, and lysine, etc. in the branches a lot. Also, it contained threonine, glutamic acid, tyrosine tryptophan alanine, and isoleucine in the stalks a lot. It was shown to be contained of essential amino acids like isoleucine, leucine, threonine, valine, methionine, lysine, phenylalanine, and tryptophan in the branches and steams more. As to the content of fatty acid in Salicornia herbacea, it found out that it contained the unsaturated fatty acid more than the saturated fatty acid. It took the content of eicosenoic acid(20:1) in the branches and stalks most. And then, it contained linoleic acid(18:2), pehtadecenoic acid(15:1), palmitic acid(16:0), and oleic acid(18:1), etc. a lot. As to the antioxidant activity in Salicornia herbacea using the DPPH radical, it was shown to be existed in the largest antioxidant activity when the concentration of methanolextract from Salicornia herbacea was 1 mM. There was higher antioxidant activity than 100 ppm BHT used as control plot when the concentration of methanol extract from the stalks was $100{\mu}M$. From the result of experiment above, Salicornia herbacea contained the essential amino acid a lot. It will be possible to be used as natural antioxidants because it has excellent antioxidant effect. Therefore, this researcher concludes that it will be available in using it as materials of functional foods.

  • This study was designed to investigate the pharmacological effects of glasswort. SD rats drunk experimental water (added to glass wort extracts) for 4 weeks. Weight gain resulted in reduced by administration of glasswort extracts compared with control group(p < 0.05). Total protein and albumin contents in serum of SD rats for 4 weeks did not show significantly difference by administration of glasswort extracts compared with control group. GOT was $126.7{\sim}134.1\;U/L$ and GPT was $41.1{\sim}46.7\;U/L$ by administration of glasswort extracts in SD rats for 4 weeks. Total and LDL cholesterol contents in serum of SD rats significantly decreased by administration of glasswort extracts compared with control group(p < 0.05) HDl cholesterol contents in serum of SD rats was significantly increased by administration of glasswort extracts compared with control group(p < 0.05). Total lipid and triglyceride contents in serum of SD rats was significantly decreased by administration of glasswort extracts compared with control group (p < 0.05). The overall results suggest that the administration of glasswort extracts can not only prevent a disease of arteriosclerosis, hyperlipidemia, fatty liver but also inhibit of weight gain.

  • Occurrence of Scrobipalpa salinella (Zeller) was investigated on glasswort in Shinan, Jeonnam and Kimjae, Jeonbuk from 2010 to 2011. The occurrence of S. salinella observed four times in a year. Adult stages of S. salinella in two areas occurred from mid-April to late September. The peak times of 1st, 2nd and 3rd generation adults of S. salinella was observed on early May, mid-June, late July (in Kimjae) to early August (in Shinan) and early September, respectively. And larval stages of S. salinella occurred from late May to late August. The peak times of development of 1st, 2nd and 3rd generation larvae of S. salinella was observed on mid-June, mid-July and mid-August, respectively. However, the 4th generation larvae began to occur in mid-September but didn't damage in glasswort. Among the distances from the bank of glasswort field (3, 6, 9 m) and periods of damage (Jun. 16, Jul. 7, Aug. 12), larval density in 3 m distance from the bank in 1st damage season (Jun. 16) was high which resulted to severe damage. Damage of 2nd and 3rd generation larvae was progressed both density of larvae and levels of damage.

  • Two flavonoids were isolated from the aerial parts of Salicornia herbacea L. by column chromatography. The structures of the flavonoid compound 1 and 2 were identified as quercetin $3-O-{\beta}-D-glucopyranoside$ and isorhamnetin $3-O-{\beta}-D-glucopyranoside$, respectively. The antioxidant activity of compound 1 was similar to those of quercetin and rutin, and the activity of compound 2, which contained methoxyl group at flavonoid B-ring, was lower than that of compound 1. The two compounds 1 and 2 were the first to be reported in this plant.

  • This study was conducted to determine the amount of flavonoids in Salicomia herbacea L. grown by a liquid chromatography / mass spectrometry (LC/MS). The flavonoids-contained quercetin (124.43 ppm), rutin (2.57 ppm), quercetin-3-${\beta}$-glucoside (3992.49 ppm), quercetin-3',4'-glucoside (0.08 ppm) and isorhamnetin (27.81 ppm) were detected in the powder sample. In particular, quercetin-3-${\beta}$-glucoside accounted for more than 99% in hay and 96% in powder. These results suggest that S. herbacea, which is one of halophyte plants, has high functional substances as an antioxidant source.

  • This study analyzed 96 individuals in 6 populations using ISSR marker to investigate the genetic diversity of Salicornia herbacea populations. The total of 49 PCR amplification bands was observed in 6 ISSR primers, and 30 of them had genetic polymorphisms. The Shannon's information index (I) and gene diversity index (h), which indicate the genetic diversity of the Salicornia herbacea populations, were 0.382 and 0.249, respectively. The genetic diversity according to the population size was lowest with 0.092 (I) and 0.058 (h) in $0.1m{\times}0.1m$ and highest with 0.338 (I) and 0.227 (h) in $25m{\times}25m$, which was suitable for the furtherance of the high population with high genetic diversity. The UPGMA dendrogram based on Nei's genetic distance did not show a significant correlation with the distance between the Salicornia herbacea population. The results indicate that the Salicornia herbacea habiting in the restricted environment should have an area over a certain size to ensure the formation of a population with genetic diversity.

  • The glasswort is an edible halophyte demonstrating various physiological effects including anti-inflammatory activity. In the present study, the effects of glasswort extracts on inflammatory events and interactions of THP-1 monocytes with intestinal epithelial cells were investigated. Five solvent fractions, including the ethylether fraction (Fr.E), were prepared from a 70% methanol extract of glasswort. THP-1 monocytes underwent differentiation by phorbol 12-myristate 13-acetate treatment and were then activated by lipopolysaccharide (LPS), which induced cyclooxygenase (COX)-2 expression. None of the glasswort fractions tested alone induced COX-2 in differentiated THP-1 cells. Fr.E, however, enhanced LPS-induced COX-2 expression in differentiated THP-1 cells. Culture media of THP-1 cells treated with each fraction stimulated the growth of normal intestinal INT-407 cells more prominently than that of HT-29 colon cancer cells. COX-2 expression in HT-29 cells was inhibited when the cells were exposed to the THP-1 culture medium treated with Fr.E. Thus, glasswort could modulate the interaction between immune cells and intestinal cells.

  • This experiment was carried out to investigate the cultivation condition of soil salinity, manure and to find out the cultivation capability of Salicornia herbacea. The optimal growth condition of soil salinity was between 1% and 4%. The growth of groups for fertilization was significantly better than control group. Salicornia herbacea grew very up from 7 kg/l0a to 9 kg/l0a for N, 12 kg/l0a for P and the K-fertilizer group was better than control group but there was not significantly different among the conditions of K-concentration. The germination was good from $0{\textperthousand}\;to\;5{\textperthousand}$ for salinity, from $20^{\circ}C\;to\;30^{\circ}C$ for temperature. On the experiment cultivation, the production by hill seeding was $5.40{\sim}5.90 kg/m^2$ and was significantly higher than the yield by broadcast sowing which was $4.01{\sim}4.20 kg/m^2$. The production by hill seeding was 2.7 times than natural production and the production by broadcast sowing 1.9 times.
