  • This study is based on field data obtained from rock grouting such as RQD value, Unit cement grout volume, Lugeon value(Lu), and Maximum grout pressure in four different dam sites. The relationship were analyzed and compared as follow. The cut-off effect after rock grouting in dam-foundation which are mostly consist of metamorphic rock is better than that of Sedimentary rock. And the impermeable effect after consolidation grouting is more efficiency than the impermeable effect after curtain grouting. The unit cement grout volume are increased as RQD value is higher in rock mass. But there is no relationship between RQD value and Lugeon value. In the sedimentary rock, which is more permeable than metamorphic rock, Lugeon value (Lu) is a linear function (Lu=0.22Vc) of unit cement grout volume (Vc). Cut-off effect of curtain grouting is less influential at each near holes which are already grouted than that of consolidation grouting. And the behavior characteristics of Lugeon value vs. the unit cement grout volume as the order of installations are almost the same.

  • The development of reinforced-roadbed material in substitute for existing roadbed is necessary to protect its failure from the dynamic stress and vibration caused by the traveling of the high-speed and heavy trains. The water quenched blast furnace slag having potential hydraulic reactivity is one of the materials in substitute for soil reinforced-roadbed. We carried out the study of basic properties of roadbed material using Portland cement and CSA(calcium sulphoaluminate) as the activator for the evaluation of its application. As the result of the strength test, this material satisfied design criterion for reinforced-roadbed. Optimum mixing ratio of this reinforced-roadbed material was 15 ~ 17.5 percent of cement and 2.5 percent of CSA by weight of the blast furnace slag. Especially, as permeability is above $10^{-3}$cm/sec, this material proved to have functions of both reinforced roadbed and drainage layer.

  • In this paper, effects of the acidification of ground and the chemical additive materials-ferric oxide, calcium chloride and calcium sulphate on the compressibility characteristics of the marine clay treated with quick lime were investigated. The rapid inflection point method was carried out. Results showed that the compression index of the untreated marine clay increased as the pH of pore water decreased. Also, the preconsolidation pressure, the coefficient of consolidation and the coefficient of permeability of the untreated marine clay decreased with pH of pore water. In the case of the marine clay treated with the quick lime-calcium chloride, the compression index decreased and the coefficient of consolidation and the coefficient of permeability increased. Specially, the preconsolidation pressure of sample treated with the quick lime-ferric oxide was higher than that of another samples.

  • Potential factors favoring black stains during fruit development in Pyrus serotina was investigated. Black stain occurred from young fruit till harvest. The color of the affected fruits in early stage was black or light reddish brown, but turned to light brown over time. Fruit bags with lower light transmission and inner bags with poor aeration stimulated the symptoms, and high water permeability of the bags increased the black stain. Much rain and/or poor light transmission and aeration within the canopies also favored the occurrence of black stain. Diminution of pathogenic fungi density by lime sulfur was more effective than the canopy spray of fungicide for the prevention of black stain.

  • In order to dispose radioactive wastes safely, it is needed to understand the mechanical, thermal, fluid behavior of rockmass and physico-chemical interactions between rockmass and water. Also, the knowledge about mechanical and hydraulic properties of rocks is required to predict and to model many conditions of geological structure, underground in-situ stress, folding, hot water interaction, intrusion of magma, plate tectonics etc. This study is based on researches about rock mechanics issues associated with a waste disposal in deep rockmass. This paper includes the mechanical and hydraulic behavior of rocks in varying temperature conditions, thermo-hydro-mechanical coupling analysis in rock mass and deformation behavior of discontinuous rocks. The mechanical properties were measured with Interaken rock mechanics testing systems and hydraulic properties were measured with transient pulse permeability measuring systems. In all results, rock properties were sensitive to temperature variation.

  • The purpose of this research is to develop an amended clay liner by utilizing waste lime produced as a by-product in chemical industries. Waste lime contains various kinds of organics which affect the permeability, compactability, and unconfined compressive strengths of soil. The geotechnical engineering properties of waste were improved by adding other materials so that they might meet the EPA requirement of clay liner. Granite weathered soil, which is abundant in Korea and can be obtained easily in the field. was used as a primary additive to improve geotechnical engineering properties of waste lime. Various kinds of laboratory tests related to geotecnnical engineering properties, required to evaluate the design criteria for the clay liner in the solid waste landfill. were carried out by changing miRing ratio of waste lime with additive. According to the laboratory test results, in order to obtain the appropriate amended clay liner. the effective miffing ratio of waste lime in granite weathered soil was proved to be about 20~30%.

  • The grout based on solution type makes it difficult to get the improvement of ground strength and the effefct of water curtain because it has lower strength and durability than suspension type. Nowadays, the technology of particle acceleration, that enhance the material permeability, such as grout based on solution type, and inexpensive grout, is being required. For these reasons, in this study, using wet milling system, we evaluated physical properties of manufactured factors such as water-cement ratio of particles before being milled, optimum milling capacity by controlling milling time and rpm, viscosity of materials, permeation coefficient, and unconfined compressive strength. Also, using micro wet milling apparatus which could manufacture ordinary Portland cement and high speed shear mix which could forcefully separate conglomerate particles in situ, we performed electrical resistivity investigation and falling head permeability tests to analyze differences of grouting effects. From these results, we found that the permeability of the applied equipment was much superior, and in the case of using high speed shear mixer, particles of grout material were well separated.

  • In this study, experiments on the SWCC were performed in order to find out the characteristics of unsaturated soil and to analyze the stability of unsaturated weathered slopes with rainfall-induced wetting. Several soil types classified by mixture portion of clay (CH) in the weathered soil (SW) were used in experimental tests. To achieve the SWCC, the filter paper method was used on SW with varying clay contents. A tensiometer test was used for measuring wetting front suction of the soils in a laboratory with varying relative densities. Based on the experimental results, it is shown that the wetting front suction increases as clay contest of mixture soil increases : in particular, the wetting front suction increases sharply as the clay contents increase. It is also found that wetting front suction affects the initial wetting band depth and stability of the slope.

  • The production of industrial wastes have increased due to the growth of population and industrial development. Among these wastes, especially amount of paper ash has been increased year after year. If it is possible to reuse industrial wastes, it will be beneficial not only economically but also environmentally. In this study, the possibility of the utilization of paper ash were investigated as a construction materials through a series of laboratory testing carried out to evaluate physical properties, compaction, consolidation, permeability and compressive strength characteristics. Concrete bricks with replacement ratio of paper ash at 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18, 20%, and clayey bricks with replacement ratio of paper ash at 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30% were used in the test in order to evaluate its quality. As a result of tests, it were shown that the maximum replacement ratio of paper ash satisfying the quality standards of concrete bricks and clayey bricks were 11.5% and 12%, respectively.

  • The grouting method, which can be used to effectively improve small areas within a short amount of time, may have different injection effects depending on the ground conditions and the levels of a water table. In particular, for ground with a relatively large permeability, the strength of the ground and the water proof ability can decrease over time due to the leaching process. To solve this problem, a "self-healing smart grouting (SSG) method", which was designed to maintain the initial strength of the ground by minimizing the leaching process, was developed recently. In this study, uniaxial compression tests were carried out on SSG samples to understand the strength of SSG over curing time where two different curing temperatures have been applied for comparison. The uniaxial compression strength of SSG was further compared with the samples prepared using conventional methods (LW and SGR). The test results showed that the uniaxial compression strength of SSG was higher at both high and low curing temperatures compared to that of the samples prepared using conventional methods. The initial strength of SSG was also relatively higher.
