This research is the result of investigating engineering characteristics of slime generated during construction of deep mixing method. Mechanical characteristics of slime have been studied through literature review and laboratory tests of unconfined compression test, permeability test and settling tests were performed. As result of field observation of slime being generated, slime started to be produced right after flight auger was penetrated into a ground and its amount was increased in progress. Unconfined compressive strength of specimen with slime obtained from in field was measured in the range of $929.7{\sim}3,509.8kN/m^2$ and the value of unconfined compressive strength was found to be changed significantly with mixing ratio of soil, cement and binder. Permeability of them was measured in the range of $4.53{\times}10^{-7}{\sim}6.62{\times}10^{-6}cm/sec$ so that the mixture was appropriate as a impervious barrier. It was also know that the value of permeability was changed with the mixing ratio of binder. As test results of solidifying slime specimen prepared in the laboratory, good quality of cement mixture with coarse soil of sand were produced, compared with fine soils of silt and clay.

This paper describes a study on the permeability reduction of the riverbed ground during urban railway tunnel construction. The research is mainly concentrated on the study of the grouting or injection methods among permeability reduction methods which can be adapted in the riverbed ground. The design technology of grouting methods considering the long term hydro-geological behaviour in the riverbed, was suggested. Two injection methods namely, Natural Durable Stabilizer (N.D.S) and Space-Multi Injection Grouting (S.M.I) methods, were introduced as new approach methods which could be adapted to modify the riverbed ground. In order to evaluate the performance of the improved ground by the N.D.S and S.M.I method, a series of pilot tests including the field and laboratory permeability tests, were carried out in the river crossing tunnel construction sites. The results obtained from pilot test program, were also reviewed. The results, the grouting efficiency of the S.M.I method using the non-alkalimeter silica sol is better than that of N.D.S method using cement. In addition, it is anticipated that the current research results are contributed to develop the grouting design technology.
In this study, the geotechnical applicability of permeable barriers that could filter the leachate from a landfill was evaluated. Specimens were cast from sand, loess and bentonite according to the specific weight ratios of them. A series of experiments are performed to determine the unconfined compressive strength and permeability of various mixing ratio of bentonite, loess, and sand. From the laboratory test, optimum mixing ratio that satisfied the regulations of unconfined compressive strength($5kgf/cm^2$) and coefficient of permeability ($10^{-3}{\sim}10^{-4}cm/sec$) in landfill was found when the weight ratio of sand and loess was 8:2 with 2% of bentonite. Using the laboratory test data and in situ test results, the applicability of the wall will be tested for various conditions.

Since the crack self-healing materials are activated according to the exposure environmental conditions from the time of crack occurrence, it is very important to clarify the relationship between the healing performance and the exposure environmental conditions of the crack surface. In this paper, the influence of the exposure environmental conditions on the crack healing performance of self-healing repair mortar was investigated through the water permeability test. The influence of temperature and humidity on the crack width of cracked specimens was evaluated. As a result of measuring the change of the crack width, the effect of curing temperature was negligible but it was confirmed that crack-closing occurred due to the change of dry-wet condition. The healing materials produced on the crack surface of the specimens was identified as calcite minerals. Since the minerals with high density are precipitated under the influence of gravity, the healing performance is somewhat different according to the direction of the crack surface, and the healing performance was significantly improved in the wet exposure condition than the air exposure condition.

Generally, fractured medium can be described with some key parameters, such as hydraulic conductivities or random field of hydraulic conductivities (continuum model), spatial and statistical distribution of permeable fractures (discrete fracture network model). Investigating the practical applicability of the well-known conceptual models for the description of groundwater flow in fractured media, various types of hydraulic tests were applied to studies on the highly fractured media in Geumsan, Korea. Results from single-hole packer test show that the horizontal hydraulic conductivities in the permeable media are between $7.67{\times}10^{-10}{\sim}3.16{\times}10^{-6}$ m/sec, with $7.70{\times}10^{-7}$ m/sec arithmetic mean and $2.16{\times}10^{-7}$ m/sec geometric mean. Total number of test interval is 110 at 8 holes. The number of completely impermeable interval is 9, and the low permeable interval - below $1.0{\times}10^{-8}$ m/sec is 14. In other words, most of test intervals are permeable. The vertical distribution of hydraulic conductivities shows apparently the good correlation with the results of flowmeter test. But the results from the cross-hole test show some different features. The results from the cross-hole test are highly related to the connectivity and/or the binary properties of fractured media; permeable and impermeable. From the viewpoint of the connection, the application of the general stochastic approach with a single continuum model may not be appropriate even in the moderately or highly permeable fractured medium. Then, further studies on the investigation method and the analysis procedures should be required for the reasonable and practical design of the conceptual model, with which the binary properties, including permeable/impermeable features, can be described.

An experiment was conducted to suggest the road pavement material combining wooden chip crushed from little useful roots and branches from logging sites or wood waste from construction sites with urethane resin. For the specimen, the mass ratio of urethane resin to construction wood waste chip/lumber waster chip was set to three different levels of 0.5, 0.75, and 1.0, which was measured, mixed with mixer, and molded; 7 days after, tensile strength test, elasticity test using golf balls and steel balls, permeability coefficient measurement, and flammability test were executed. As the result, the tensile strength of the specimen at the dry state in the air exhibited the range of 0.2-1.1MPa, and there was no change after 7 days of aging. When submerged in water, however, the strength was partially diminished; the diminishing rate was greater for less urethane resin usage, and therefore it appears desirable to set the mass ratio of resin to the wood waste chip over 0.75 to consider the moisture intrusion by precipitation and such. As the result of elasticity test, the GB and SB coefficients of the specimen using wood waste chips and urethane resin were measured to be low at below 20%, exhibiting excellent elasticity as road pavement material. Also, the permeability coefficient was over 0.5mm/sec for specimens of all combinations, exceeding the standard value required after construction for permeable pavement material, and the flammability of wood-type pavement material was evaluated to have no practical issues.

The dependency of criteria used to terminate compatibility tests on the prehydration and quality of bentonite in geosynthetic clay liners (GCLs) is evaluated based on permeation with chemical solutions containing 5, 10, 20, 50, and 100 mM calcium chloride ($CaCl_2$). The hydraulic conductivity tests are not terminated before chemical equilibrium between the effluent and the influent chemistry has been established, resulting in test durations ranging from < 1 day to > 900 days, with longer test durations associated with lower $CaCl_2$ concentrations. The evaluation includes both physical termination criteria (i.e., volumetric flow ratio and steady hydraulic conductivity based on ASTM D 5084, ${\ge}2$ pore volumes of flow, constant thickness of specimen) and chemical termination criteria requiring equilibrium between influent and effluent chemistry (viz., electrical conductivity, pH, and $Ca^{2+}\;and\;Cl^-$ concentrations). For specimens permeated with 5, 10, and 20 mM $CaCl_2$ solutions, only the criterion based on chemical equilibrium in $Ca^{2+}$ concentration correlates well with equilibrium in hydraulic conductivity, regardless of prehydration or quality of bentonite. However, all of the termination criteria, except for the volumetric flow ratio and 2 pore volumes of flow for the prehydrated specimens, correlate well with equilibrium in hydraulic conductivity regardless of prehydration or quality of bentonite when permeated with 50 and 100 mM $CaCl_2$ solutions. The results illustrate the uniqueness of the termination criterion based on solute concentration equilibrium between the effluent and the influent with respect to both prehydration and quality of bentonite in the GCLs.
This paper presents the engineering property of light weight soil made of soil mixed with recycled stylofoam and stabilizer. Recycled stylofoam beads is able to use by lightweight fill materials because it is light, adiabatic, and effective for vibration interception. Especially, recycled stylofoam beads is easy to supply because stylofoam have been recycle item in 1996. In this study, physical and geotechnical properties of the light weight mixed soil(weathered granite soil mixed with Stylofoam Beads) were analyzed by laboratory experiments to examine its suitability for backfill materials. Laboratory tests were performed to evaluated strength, bearing capacity, weight, permeability, microphotograph analysis with variation of mixing ratio. Based on the results, it is concluded that the use of recycled stylofoam beads is acceptable lightweight fill.
A new approach of estimating the coefficient of permeability (COP) from resistivity has been developed, which can provide another good application tool of geophysical methods to geo-technical field. Borehole electrical logging and Lugeon test results in Yangsan area showed that resistivity is inversely proportional to the COP. For granite and andesite in Yansan area, the relation between the resistivity ($\rho$) and the COP (k) revealed that, $log(k){\approx}-0.85621\;log({\rho})+0.0031$. Derived relation is applied to AMT data acquired from a survey line along the tunnel. Two-dimensional resistivity distribution from AMT data was converted to two-dimensional COP section. The final COP section can be used as good input data for groundwater modeling.
In this study, a series of uniaxial unconfined compression test and constant-head test were performed to investigate the mechanical characteristics of porous concrete using recycled-aggregate for the varying unit weight and water-cement ratio. To enhance the permeability of the porous concrete, the recycled-aggregate with similar grain size in the range of $40{\pm}5mm$ was used and water-cement ratio that leads to the lean-mix was adapted. The mechanical characteristics of the porous concrete cured for 3 days were examined; the compressive strength and $E_{50}$ showed their maximum values with 40% water-cement ratio and $1.8t/m^3$ unit weight and the permeability coefficient was averagely measured in the range of $0.9{\times}10^0cm/sec$ regardless of water-cement ratio and unit weight.
