  • The main difference between mono-volume rendering and multi-volume rendering is data intermixing. In this paper, we first propose a selective rendering method for fast visualizing specific volume according to the surface level and then present data intermixing method for multiple volumes. The selective rendering method is to generate distance transformed volume using a distance transform to determine the minimum distance to the nearest interesting part and then render it. The data intermixing method for multiple volumes is to combine several volumes using intensity weighted intermixing method, opacity weighted intermixing method, opacity weighted intermixing method with depth information and then render it. We show the results of selective rendering of left ventricle and right ventricle generated from EBCT cardiac images and of data intermixing for combining original volume and left ventricular volume or right ventricular volume. Our method offers a visualization technique of specific volume according to the surface level and an acceleration technique using a distance transformed volume and the effective visual output and relation of multiple images using three different intermixing methods in three-dimensional space.

  • This study was conducted to examine the readiness for death and death anxiety among hospitalized cancer patients. A convenience sample of 183 cancer patients admitted to four hospitals in Korea was recruited for this study. Data were collected in 2010. Collected data were analyzed with descriptive statistics, independent t-test, one-way ANOVA, and Pearson's correlation coefficient. The mean scores of readiness for death and death anxiety were 1.99(${\pm}0.69$) and 2.21(${\pm}0.59$) out of 4, respectively. 'Psychological readiness' showed the highest mean score among the death anxiety domains, and 'dying process' had the highest mean score among the death anxiety domains. No statistically significant correlation was found between readiness for death and death anxiety. Readiness for death was statistically significantly different according to age, afterlife beliefs, stage of cancer, duration of disease, and number of symptoms. Death anxiety showed significant difference according to faith in God and afterlife beliefs. Distress in the process of dying needs to be managed for cancer patients and spiritual interventions should be considered to relieve death anxiety.

  • Purpose: This study investigated the relationship between the needs for hospice care and quality of life in cancer patients. Methods: Data were collected from 127 cancer patients hospitalized at a university hospital in Chonbuk between October, 2006 to March, 2007. Two instruments were used: cancer patients' need for hospice care, developed by Kang and Kim and quality of life developed by Tae et al. Results: The mean scores were 3.11 out of 4 for hospice care needs, and 5.25 out of 10 for quality of life. The correlation between needs for hospice care and quality of life was moderate and negative (r=-0.395, P<0.01). Among the four groups of needs, physical need was the most strongly correlated with quality of lifer (r=-0.388, P<0.01). The need for hospice care was significantly different according to participants' religion (t=6.02, P<0.05), and duration of disease (F=3.45, P< 0.05). Quality of life was significantly different according to participants' monthly income (F=3.38, P<0.05). cancer stage (F=8.10, P<0.01) and chemotherapy (t=6.09, P=0.015). Conclusion: The results suggested that the cancer patients' hospice care needs should be answered in order to improve their quality of life. While doing so, participants' characteristic need should also be considered.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of a spirituality/hope promoting program on fighting spirit, helplessness, anxiety, and self-care behaviors. Methods: A nonequivalent control group pretest- posttest design was used. Study subjects were 22 cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy for the experimental group and 31 for the control group. The experimental group received a 4-week intervention, 30-50 minutes a day weekly. Variables were measured at baseline, 4 and 8 weeks later. Fighting spirit and helplessness were measured by MAC(Mental Adjustment to Cancer) and anxiety was measured by Hospital Anxiety and Depression scale. Self-care behaviors scale developed by Oh et al.,(1997) was used. Results: The experimental group revealed significantly more fighting spirit(t=-4.10, p=.000). more self-care behaviors(t=-5.91, p=.000). and less helplessness(t=3.94, p=.000). No difference, however, was found in anxiety between the two groups(t=.24, p=.861). Conclusion: These results suggested positive effects of a spirituality/hope intervention program. Helplessness decreased mainly through an increase in fighting spirit. Self-care behaviors increased mainly through an decrease in helplessness and increase in fighting spirit.

  • Clear cell sarcoma is a rare soft tissue sarcoma that occurs in tendons and aponeuroses, usually in the lower extremities in young adults. The exact histogenesis is not definitely established. We experienced a case of 58 year-old female who presented with a $3.2{\times}2.2cm$ sized mass located in the subcutaneous tissue of the left lower thigh. The mass was well-circumscribed, grayish and firm. Two small satellite nodules were also seen. Histrionically, the tumor was composed of round to fusiform cells with clear or pale eosinophilic cytoplasm and separated into compact nests or short fascicles by delicate fibrous septa. The melanin pigments and hemosiderin were seen. Tumor cells showed positive reaction for S-100 protein and HMB-45. The ultrastructural examination showed abundant mitochondria and melanosomes.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify and describe phenomenological structures of the lived experience of struggling against an illness for patients with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS). Methods: The participants were 7 patients with ALS recruited by snowball sampling who agreed to participate in this research and could verbally communicated with the researcher. Data were collected by long term-repeated interviews with participants in their own homes. Data were analyzed using Colaizzi's method of phenomenology. Results: Four categories were extracted as follows: 'Being seized with fear of death', 'Living a marginal life', 'Accepting hard fate', and 'Clinging to faint life'. Seven theme clusters were identified as: 'Wandering to find a healing method with ominous signs in the body', 'Having a diagnosis of ALS is like a bolt from the blue and struggling against illness with faint hope', 'Being forced out to the edge of life with anguish', 'Filling one's heart with hatred and longing toward becoming estranged from the world', 'Living with stigma as a stumbling block with bitter grief in one's heart', 'Accepting every things as one's fate with self controlled fear of death', and 'Attaching to desire to live'. Conclusion: The results of this study can be used to develop the programs to support patients with ALS and their family.
