  • In this study, a heavy-metal stabilization treatment using stabilizing agents derived from waste resources was utilized on Incheon North Port range sediment contaminated with Pb, Zn, and Cu. Both calcined red mud (5%, 10%, and 15% w/w) and oyster shell (5%, 10%, and 15% w/w) were applied for a wet-curing duration of 15 days. From the sequential extraction results, the oxide and organic fraction of heavy metals (Pb, Zn, and Cu) were observed strongly in the contaminated sediment. However, the fraction of heavy metal in the stabilized sediment was higher than the organic and residual fraction, in comparison to the contaminated sediment. Moreover, the leaching of heavy metals was reduced in the stabilized sediment, compared with the contaminated sediment. From these results, red mud and oyster shell were shown to be potential stabilizers of heavy metals in contaminated sediment.

  • Subsea pipelines have been operated with buried depths of 1.2-4m underneath the seabed to prevent buoyancy and external impacts. Therefore, they have to show resistance to both the soil load and the hydrostatic pressure. In this study, the structural integrity of a subsea pipeline subjected to soil load and hydrostatic pressure was evaluated by using FE analyses. A parametric study showed that the internal pressure increased the plastic collapse depth by increasing the resistance to plastic collapse. The hoop stress increased with an increase in the buried depth for the same water depth; however, the hoop stress decreased with an increase in the water depth for the same buried depth.

  • One-chambered sediment cells with a variety of anodic electrodes were tested for generation of electricity. Material used for anodes was iron, brass, zinc/iron, copper and graphite felt which was used for a common cathode. The estuarine sediment served as supplier of oxidants or electron-producing microbial habitat which evoked electrons via fast metal corrosion reactions or a complicated microbial electron transfer mechanism, respectively. Maximum power density and current density were found to be $6.90\;W/m^2$ (iron/zinc) and $7.76\;A/m^2$ (iron), respectively. Interestingly, copper wrapped with carbon cloth produced better electric performance than copper only, by 60%, possibly because the cloth not only prevented rapid corrosion on the copper surface by some degrees, but also helped growing some electron-emitting microbes on its surface. At anodes oxidation reduction potential(ORP) was kept to be stationary over time except at the very initial period. The pH reduction in the copper and copper/carbon electrodes could be a sign of organic acid production due to a chemical change in the sediment. The simple estimation of interfacial, electrical resistances of electrodes and electrolyte in the sediment cell that a key to the electricity generation should be in how to control corrosion rate or microbial electron transfer activity.

  • A theoretical $CO_2$ storage capacity is estimated on the southwestern continental shelf margin of Ulleung Basin, offshore Korea using 2D/3D multi-channel seismic and wellbore data acquired in the area over the two decades since the late 1980s. For the first time in Korea, the present study applies an efficiency factor to the capacity calculation, together with the other required parameters. For possible $CO_2$ storage volume estimation of the study area, we interpreted the seismic data in the Gorae area from 800 m to 3,000 m below the seafloor integrated with the well data, and identified five different seismic units; the limited depth interval is considered because of fluid state of $CO_2$ and tightness of the formation. The total volumes of each seismic unit were converted with a time-depth relation inferred from the checkshot surveys before the other required parameters including porosity and density were applied to compute the potential storage capacity. The accumulated possible storage volume from the five depositional units in the study area is estimated to be approximately 5,100 Mton ($P_{50}$). The approaches made in this study will be applied to the rest area of the basin and other continental shelves (i.e., Yellow Sea and northern part of East China Sea) in the next phase.

  • Gas hydrates play a significant role in the global carbon cycle and climate change because methane, a greenhouse gas, can be released from the dissociation of gas hydrate. Anaerobic oxidation of methane (AOM) is an important process that consumes more than 90% of the methane released into the hydrosphere and atmosphere. In this study, the microbial community associated with the methane gas hydrate sediment in the Ulleung basin, East Sea of Korea (UBGH) was analyzed by phylogenetic analysis of the mcrA and 16S rRNA gene libraries. A vertical stratification of the dominating anaerobic methane oxidizer (ANME)-1 group was observed at the surface and the sulfate methane transition zone (SMTZ). The ANME-2c group was found to be dominant in the high methane layer. The archaea of marine benthic group B, which is commonly observed in the AOM region, accounted for more than 50% of the identifications in all sediments. Nitrate reducing bacteria were predominant at SMTZ (Halomonas: 56.5%) and high methane layer (Achromobacter: 52.6%), while sulfate reducing bacteria were not found in UBGH sediments. These results suggest that the AOM process may be carried out by a syntrophic consortium of ANME and nitrate reducing bacteria in the gas hydrates of the Ulleung Basin of the East Sea.

  • This study examined the habitat distribution characteristics of Aquatic Oligochaeta according to the construction of weirs in the four major rivers in South Korea. The area was investigated 10 times from March to October in 2018 and a total of 18 species and 35,390 ind. m-2 were sampled. The dominant species by number was Limnodrilus hoffmeisteri(77.1%) and the subdominant species was Branchiura sowerbyi(9.5%). A total of 32.418 g m-2 dry weight was analyzed. The correlation analysis showed that the number of Aquatic Oligochaeta individuals correlated with the sediment depth, clay ratio, silt ratio, sand ratio, cobble ratio, pebble ratio, pH and TOC mg L-1. Specifically, the clay ratio and sediment depth were associated with increases in the number of individuals. The total organic carbon(TOC) increased from March to October and, conversely, the number of individuals tended to decrease.

  • Open-water sediment disposal has many applications in costal construction. Dumping of sediment in open water can be divided into descending stage under water and sedimentation stage on the seabed, and retained rate is evaluated from analyzed results of these two successive stages. Descending particle cloud have two distinct thermal and swam phase, and trajectory equations for each phase are derived to describe settling velocity and radius of particle cloud. For sedimentation stage, a numerical simulator is used to calculate growth factors for particle fiction angle and current velocity. Retained rate is defined as a mass rate of remained sediment inside the circle which has a center at dumping point on the sea level and user-defined effective radius. Retained rate map for Singapore coast is presented with water depth of 20 m, current velocity of 0.0~1.5 m/s, and effective radius of 5 m. It will decrease sediment mass loss during disposal operation and minimize surrounding environmental pollution.

  • $^{31}$ /P NMR and XRD have been used to study the mineralogical compositions and the phosphorus species in marine sediments near Wolsung nuclear power plant. The core samples with 30cm depth were investigated and no mineralogical changes have been found. The studied marine sediments were composed of quartz, albite, microcline, calcite, and some clay minerals such as illite, smectite, chlorite, and kaolinite. Only orthophosphate-monoester and very small amount of ortho-phosphate-diester were identified as phosphorus species in the studied sample, different from the species reported in other countries. These phosphorus species are mainly from organisms and was exposed to the oxic conditions. The consistent mineralogical compositions as well as the same phosphorus species throughout the entire core samples indicate that the constant oxic condition was kept without any changes in sedimentary conditions or the sediments were deposited with different sedimentary conditions, but later they were disturbed by other activities and exposed to the surface oxic conditions continuously.

  • In order to predict the long-term effects of pollutants in sediment on the water quality and the improvement of water quality according to dredging operation, models applied to decide the location and the propriety of dredging were developed. At first, the area was divided into several segments and the developed model was applied to simulate the behaviors of contaminants in an aquatic environment by using estimated parameters. And then through the sensitivity analysis between parameters, the optimum values were determined. The long-term modelling in the area A forecasted that PCBs concentration in the hot spot was decreased from $3.1\;{\mu}g/L$ to $2.4\;{\mu}g/L$ in 30 years. Contaminants in sediment as a source of water pollution did not reduce remarkably in the long run. Therefore it is difficult to expect the improvement of water qualities without the fundamental isolation of contaminants from sediment. It is considered that the selective dredging in the spot improves the water quality consequently.
