  • End-member (EM) analysis of grain-size distribution data for detrital fractions of IODP Site U1430 core sediments from the South Korea Plateau (East Sea) identified 4 EMs grain-size populations (EM) which represent either Asian dusts (Hwangsa) or volcanic ashes. The two EMs representing volcanic ashes consist of fine and coarse glass shards with various morphologies and constitute 0-82% of the total grain-size distributions. The 33% mixing percentage of volcanic ash EMs seems appropriate for a cut-off value for discrimination of grain-size data influenced by volcanic ash input from those dominated by Hwangsa.

  • In this paper, we propose novel feature extraction algorithm for classification of seabed sediment. In previous researches, acoustic reflection coefficient has been used to classify seabed sediments, which is constant in terms of frequency. However, attenuation of seabed sediment is a function of frequency and is highly influenced by sediment types in general. Hence, we developed a feature vector by using attenuation variation with respect to frequency. The attenuation variation is obtained by using reflected signal from the second sediment layer, which is generated by broadband chirp. The proposed feature vector has advantage in number of dimensions to classify the seabed sediment over the classical scalar feature (reflection coefficient). To compare the proposed feature with the classical scalar feature, dimension of proposed feature vector is reduced by using linear discriminant analysis (LDA). Synthesised acoustic amplitudes reflected by seabed sediments are generated by using Biot model and the performance of proposed feature is evaluated by using Fisher scoring and classification accuracy computed by maximum likelihood decision (MLD). As a result, the proposed feature shows higher discrimination performance and more robustness against measurement errors than that of classical feature.

  • The sedimentary environment and sediment were surveyed at the West-Northern site of Chagwi-do nearby Jeju Island for the design of the embedded suction anchor system of 10 MW-class floating wave-offshore wind hybrid power generation system. According to the classification scheme of Chough et al.[2002], the echo type of the seismic profiles using the chirp III was classified. As a results, the center and west-northern area of survey site were proved to be type I-3 where subbottom layer with thickness 5~15 m exists under the flat seafloor. On the other hands, the east-southern area were regarded to be type I-1, I-2 and III-1 where seafloor reflection is much stronger than type I-3. Also, the physical tests (unit weight, moisture content, grain size, liquid limit, specific gravity) were performed with samples taken from 8 fixed locations. It is found that the sand (SP), the sand blended with silt (SM) and the mixture of SP-SM are distributed uniformly on the survey area.

  • To investigate the processes governing the distribution of elements in the tidal flat, thirty-eight sediment samples collected from the Saemangeum tidal flat of the Korean west coast were analyzed for their contents of major (Al, Fe, Mg, Ca, Na, K, Ti) and trace (P, Mn, Ba, Sr, V, Cr, Co, Cu, Ni, Zn, Pb) elements. Most elements showed generally lower contents compared to data published for other tidal flats of Korea, and the effect of anthropogenic input could not be recognized in the sediments. The relative abundance and distribution of most of the elements varied significantly with the grain size of sediments. High contents of Al, Fe, Mg, Ti, P, Mn, V, Co, Cr, Cu, Ni and Zn were found in the finer sediments in the upper tidal flat of the study area, suggesting that tidal sedimentation processes play an important role in controlling the distribution of these elements. However, sediment grain size does not impose any significant effect on the abundance and distribution of Ca, Na, K, Ba, Sr and Pb. It appears that the clastic mineralogy in the coarse-grained fractions is the dominant factor determining the distribution of these elements in the study area.

  • The foraminiferal researches carried out on the bottom sediments of the Korean Yellow Sea were reviewed. They began from the materials collected in the mid-1960. Most of the study materials were obtained from the gravity or piston corers as well as from the grab samplers. However, relatively long cores were obtained by a drilling ship in the mid-1990. The paleoenvironmental and sea-level histories associated with the foraminiferal changes were the main topics of the foraminiferal researches. Micropaleontological characteristics were also revealed. Sediments were supplied through the input of the rivers and streams from the adjacent mainland China and Korean Peninsula since the Holocene. Although the open sea has influenced off Mokpo now, it had influenced off Kunsan in mid-Holocene which was clearly seen from the occurrence of planktonic foraminifera. However, more advanced methods of study adopting geochemistry such as an absolute age estimate, an isotope analysis and an analysis of elements in combination with other fields of studies related with foraminiferal ecology should be applied to foraminiferal researches to reveal marine geological phenomena, such as climatic fluctuations and related marine environmental changes, in more detail. Additionally, it should be kept in mind that paleontolgical research including foraminifera is essential to the understanding of the recent as well as ancient environmental changes of the earth.

  • This study was carried out in order to determine the remediation of total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPHs), trichloroethylene (TCE), perchloroethylene (PCE), benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and xylenes (BTEX) compounds for non-aqueous phase liquids (NAPLs) using in-situ air sparging (IAS) / vapor extraction (VE) with the marine sediments of Mandol, Hajeon, Sangam and Busan, South Korea. Surface sediment of Mandol area had sand characteristics (average particle size, 1.789 ${\Phi}$), and sandy silt characteristics (average particle size, 5.503 ${\Phi}$), respectively. Sangam surface sediment had silt characteristics (average particle size, 5.835 ${\Phi}$). Sediment characteristics before experiment in the Busan area showed clay characteristics (average particle size, 8.528 ${\Phi}$). TPHs level in the B1 column of Mandol, Hajeon, Sangam, and Busan sediments were 2,459, 6,712, 4,348, and 14,279 ppm. B2 (3 L/min) to B5 (5 L/min) columns reduced 99.5% to 100.0% of TCE and 93.2% to 100.0% of PCE. Removal rates of TCE, PCE, and BTEX are closely correlated (0.90-0.99) with particle sizes and organic carbon concentrations. However, TPHs (0.76) and benzene (0.71) showed the poorer but moderate correlations with the same parameters.

  • Constructed wetlands (CWs) are widely used to solve water quality problems caused by diffuse pollution from agricultural areas; however, phytoplankton blooms in CW systems can occur due to long hydraulic retention time (HRT), high nutrient loading, and exposure to sunlight. This study was conducted to evaluate the efficiency of a CW designed to treat agricultural diffuse pollution and develop a design concept to improve the nature-based capabilities of the system. Monitoring was conducted to assess contribution of individual wetland components (i.e. water, sediments, and plants) in the treatment performance of the system. During dry days, the turbidity and particulates concentration in the CW increased by 80 to 197% and 10 to 87%, respectively, due to the excessive growth of phytoplankton. On storm events, the concentration of particulates, organics, and nutrients were reduced by 43% to 70%, 22% to 49%, and 15% to 69% due to adequate water circulation and constant flushing of pollutants in the system. Based on the results, adequate water circulation is necessary to improve the performance of the CW. Free water surface CWs are usually designed to have a constant water level; however, the climate in South Korea is characterized by distinct dry and rainy seasons, which may not be suitable for this conventional design. This study presented a concept of multifunctional design in order to solve current CW design problems and improve the flood control, water quality management, and environmental functions of the facility.

  • KIOST-HYU joint acoustics experiment was performed on the western shallow water off the Taean peninsula in the Yellow Sea in May 2013. In this paper, mid-frequency (6~16 kHz) bottom loss data measured in a grazing angle range of $17{\sim}60^{\circ}$ are presented and compared to the predictions obtained using a Rayleigh reflection model. The sediment structure of the experimental site was characterized by multi-layered sediment and the components of the surficial sediment consisted of various types of particles with a mean grain size of $5.9{\phi}$. The model predictions obtained using the mean grain size were not in agreement with the measured bottom loss, and those obtained using the grain size of $4{\phi}$, which was estimated by an inversion process, showed a best fit to the measurements. It would be because the standard deviation of the gain-size distribution of surficial sediment is $4.3{\phi}$, which is much larger than those of other areas around the experimental site. Finally, the model predictions obtained using the geoacoustic parameters estimated from the inversion process for the surficial sediment layer and those corresponding to the mean grain size of $1.3{\phi}$ for lower layer are reasonably agreement with the measured bottom loss data.

  • The purpose of this study is to determine the geochemical characteristics of the stream sediments in the Cheongpung area. So that we can understand the natural background and predict the prospects of geochemical disaster, if any. We collected the stream sediments samples by wet sieving along the primary channels and slow dried the collected samples in the laboratory and ground them to pass a 200 mesh using an alumina mortar and pestle for chemical analysis. Miner-alogical characteristics, major, trace and rare earth elements were determined by XRD, XRF, ICP-AES and NAA analysis methods. For geochemical characteristics on the geological group of stream sediments, the studied area was grouped into granitic gneiss area, metatectic gneiss area, Dado tuff area, Yuchi conglomerate area, and Neungju flow area in the Cheongpung area. Contents of major elements for the stream sediments in the Cheongpung area were $SiO_2\;47.31{\sim}72.81\;wt.%,\;A1_2O_3 \;11.26{\sim}21.88\;wt.%,\;Fe_2O_3\;2.83{\sim}8.39\;wt.%,\;CaO\;0.34{\sim}7.54\;wt.%,\;MgO\; 0.55{\sim}3.59\;wt.%,\;K_2O\;1.71{\sim}4.31\;wt.%,\;Na_2O\;0.56{\sim}2.28\;wt.%,\;TiO_2\;0.46{\sim}1.24\;wt.%,\;MnO\;0.04{\sim}0.27\;wt.%,\;P_2O_5\;0.02{\sim}0.45\;wt.%$. The con-tents of trace and rare earth elements for the stream sediments were $Ba\;700ppm{\sim}8990ppm,\;Be\;1.0{\sim}3.50ppm,\;Cu\;6.20{\sim}60ppm,\;Nb\;12{\sim}28ppm,\;Ni\;4.4{\sim}61ppm,\;Pb\;13{\sim}34ppm,\;Sr\;65{\sim}787ppm,\;V\;4{\sim}98ppm,\;Zr\;32{\sim}164ppm,\;Li\;21{\sim}827ppm,\;Co\;3.68{\sim}65ppm,\;Cr\;16.7{\sim}409ppm,\;Cs\;2.72{\sim}37.1ppm,\;Hf\;4.99{\sim}49.2ppm,\;Rb\;71.9{\sim}649ppm,\;Sb\;0.16{\sim}5.03ppm,\;Sc\;4.97{\sim}52ppm,\;Zn\;26.3{\sim}375ppm,\;Ce\;60.6{\sim}373ppm,\;Eu\;0.82{\sim}6ppm,\;Yb\;0.71{\sim}10ppm$.
