• Taxonomic identities of Utricularia japonica and U. tenuicaulis were examined. Utricularia japonica was differed from U. tenuicaulis by having a scape narrower than the stem, rather sparsely arranged leaves, and more or less oblong leaves. Utricularia japonica has been known to occur widely in Korea due to the misidentification of U. tenuicaulis, which is distributed widely in southern and middle Korea. However, only one population of U. japonica was found in Chunjin Lake, near Kosung-gun, Kwangwon-Do, in Korea.

• In order to find out the most favorable shape and structure of pot for conger eel, Astroconger myriaster(Brevoort), the box type, tube type and flat box type of net pots and the pipe type of plastic pot were prepared. Then, the ability of the pots attracting the eel into them were investigated through a tank experiment. The attracting ability was highest in the pipe type without distinction of its length, 50cm and 60cm. In the flat box type, the effective height of pot and the diameter of entrance tip turned out 5cm respectively. But the ability was very poor in the rest pots, especially in the tube type. Thus, the pipe type and flat box type of pots were employed again in a field experiment for comparing their catches with those of the conventional bamboo and plastic pots. In the experiment, the catches were the most in the pipe type and second in the flat box type. But the bamboo and plastic pots both produced comparatively low catches, showing no significant difference between them. It was therefore concluded that the pipe type of pot might be the most favorable one for catching the conger eel.

  • To investigate the entrapping behavior of blue crab, rock shell and green ling, which are mainly caught with the other trap nets in the coastal area of Yellow Sea, by the using duration of trap nets through the water tank experiment. We select the three kinds of trap nets which have different using duration such as new, 6 months and 12 months used one, and observe the entrapping ratio into the trap nets, respectively. In the mean while, in order to obtain the basic data for the estimate of mesh selectivity of the other trap nets, the entrapping behavior into the trap nets for green ling which has high activity compared to blue crab and rock shell, are examined to the three kinds of mesh size (35mm, 50mm and 65mm). The results are as follows ; 1. The mean entrapping ratio of blue crab by the using duration of trap nets in high with 4.4 fishes (44.0%) in the 6 months used one, become lower with 2.9 fishes (28.0%) in the new one, and with 2.0 fishes (20.0%) in the 12 months used one. 2. The mean entrapping ratio of rock shell by the using duration of trap nets in high with 7.3 fishes (36.7%) in the new one, and become lower with 7.2 fishes (35.8%) in the 6 months used one, and with 5.7 fishes (28.3%) in the 12 months used one. 3. The mean entrapping ratio of green ling by the using duration of trap nets in high with 3.4 fishes (34.0%) in the 6 months used one, and become lower with 3.0 fishes (30.0%) in the new one, and with 2.8 fishes (28.0%) in the 12 months used one. 4. The mean residual ratio of green ling by the mesh size of trap nets is high with 2.4 fishes (24.0%) in the 35mm mesh size, and become lower with 2.2 fishes (22.0%) in the 50mm mesh size and 2.0 fishes (20.0%) in the 65mm mesh size.

  • The behavior of conger eel, Astroconger myriaster (Brevoort), to the bamboo and plastic pots with baits was investigated alternately in two experimental water tanks. One of the pots being dropped on the tank bottom, the eels touched it to obtain the bait probably by their sense of smell, and increased rapidly in the number of touch to show a maximum within 30 minutes. But the touch was made mainly to the pot wall at which the bait was located and quite accidentally to the pot mouth. The eels touched the pot mouth retreated frequently without attempting to enter the pot and their entering was very hampered by the bamboo funnel constituting the pot mouth. However, a entering, if made, encouraged other touches and the touches ascribed other enterings. But, if 30 minutes elapsed, the number of touch decreased gradually and so the enterings were little made. The ability of pots attracting the eels into them was varied with their inclination to the tank bottom and the bait position in them. That is, the pot which was laid horizontally showed high ability of attracting in case in which the bait was fixed in the vicinity of its mouth. The pot, inclined by $30^{\circ}$ by lifting its tail and had a bait left free, showed almost equal ability to the horizontal pot with a bait in the vicinity of mouth. But the pot, inclined by $30^{\circ}$ by lifting its mouth and had a bait left free, showed a very low attracting. A comparison between the bamboo and plastic pots gave only that the entering of the eels became later several minutes in the latter.

  • Traditional sea Eel pots can be divided into two groups such as bamboo and plastic pots, however they are nearly same in a shape with one entrance and fishing efficiency, except their materials. Very few yet have been studied on their catching methods or catching mechanisms at the view point of behavior. Accordingly, we have designed tubular pots in order to fill up faults of traditional fishing gear construction and behaviors of sea eel. The suitable tubular pots was decided by comparative experiments in the water tank and the fishing efficiency was compared through the field experiments. The results obtained are as follows : 1. The differences between traditional plastic pots and improved tubular pots are firstly two entrances in both ends of tube without holes, secondly flapper nets are fixed at the end of each cone, and thirdly a bait bag is fixed at the center of pot. 2. The standard size of the suitable tubular pot is: $$Tube\;:\;\phi\;12\~13{\times}L80\;cm$$, $$Cone\;:\;Inside\;ring\;\phi6{\times}D5\;cm$$, Flapper : L10 cm. 3. The fishing efficiency of tubular rots is 2.3 times better than that of plastic pots.

  • The reason of the loss for the plastic sea-eel pots were estimated as crew's mistake, strong current, bad weather, rough seabed, artificial reef and other boats' fishing. Especially, pot loss happened on the fishing could make some additional catch, loss of the catches and ghost fishing because there are baits and alive fish in the lost pot. Quantity of the lost pots was estimated as 2~4 times of the ordinary usage. On the result of investigation to analyze the possibility of sustainable ghost fishing for the lost pot to feed the fishes at anytime because there were blenny, silver whiting, bar-tailed flathead and shrimp including sea-eel in the lost pot. In the bioeconomic point, ghost fishing is competitive with the general fishing. Accordingly, usage of biodegradable plastic material for the plastic sea-eel pot will be better to reduce ghost fishing

  • The behavior of conger eel, Astroconger myriaste(Brevoort), to the net pots with baits was investigated alternately in two experimental water tanks. One of the pots being dropped on the tank bottom, the eels increased rapidly in number of touching the pot to show a maximum whithin 30 minutes and then decreased gradually. The enterings of eels into the pots were also made mainly within 30 minutes and easier in pots with lower entrances. But the complete enterings were decided by the passage of eel tails through the pot entrances and so the eels retreated frequently after attemping to enter the pots, especially in pots small in the interval between the entrances and the baits or in pots with flappers. However, most of enterings encouraged the touches and earlier enterings ascribed earlier production of maximum touch. The eels, if entered the pots without flappers, got out of the pots relatively easily and the getting-out was easier in pots with lower entrances. On the other hand, the eels entered the pot with flappers could not get out of the pots. A comparison between the circular and square pots gave that the guidance of eels to the entrances was easier in the former and the passing of eels through the entrances in the latter, not only at the inside of pots but also at the outside. The general behavior of eels in touching or entering the net pots in the above results was almost equal to that on the bamboo and plastic pots in the previous paper.
