Railroad accident analysis and countermeasure (철도사고 분석과 대책)

  • Most railroad accidents are due to human errors. In particular, most of the causes of these accidents are faults of an engine driver, such as lack of signal confirmation, insecure braking, driving by guess or force of habit. This paper identifies a problem(s) by analyzing accidents for the past 10 years and also seeks a solution to train good engine drivers in order to prevent railroad accidents. In summary, what is needed are: 1) proper placement of various manpower, 2) proper training of engine drivers, 3) proper legislation for a 2-man on board system, and 4) proper reformation of personnel management.

Sequential Motion Vector Error Concealment Algorithm for H.264 Video Coding (H.264 표준 동영상 부호화 방식을 위한 순차적 움직임 벡터 오류 은닉 기법)

  • In this paper, we propose a sequential motion vector recovery algorithm for H.264 video coding standard. Motion vectors of H.264 video coding standard cover relatively smaller areas than other standard, since motion estimation of H.264 takes place in the fashion of variable block size. Therefore, the correlation of motion vectors between neighboring blocks increases as the block size of motion estimation is lowered. Under the framework of sequential recovery, we introduce a motion vector recovery using $\alpha$-trimed mean filter. Experimental results show that proposed algorithm is useful in real time video delivery .with nearly comparable or better visual quality than previous approaches such as macro block boundary matching and Lagrage interpolation.

How Do Korean and U.S. Elementary Preservice Teachers Analyze Students' Addition and Subtraction Computational Strategies and Errors? (한국과 미국 예비 초등교사는 자연수 덧셈과 뺄셈 연산에 대한 학생의 수학적 전략과 오류를 어떻게 분석하는가?)

  • This study explores and compares Korean and U.S. elementary preservice teachers' analytic approaches of students' addition and subtraction computational strategies. Twenty-six Korean and twenty U.S. elementary preservice teachers participated in the study. Participants were asked to analyze mathematical approaches and errors from students' addition and subtraction operations. Preservice teachers' written documents were analyzed by applying open coding and inductive coding based on the grounded theory. As a result, the pattern of error analysis and interpretation of students' addition computations were similar for both Korean and U.S. preservice teachers whereas there were some differences in the analysis of students' subtraction computations. Both Korean and U.S. preservice teachers had difficulties identifying students' strategies and errors for a complicated and unconventional computational approach. Results also indicated that preservice teachers' noticing and interpretation of students' strategies and errors were influenced by their K-12 mathematics curriculum and teacher education program. This study suggests implications and future directions for teacher education, more contextualized teacher preparation programs and balanced connection to the K-12 curriculum.

Improved Sentence Boundary Detection Method for Web Documents (웹 문서를 위한 개선된 문장경계인식 방법)

  • In this paper, we present an approach to sentence boundary detection for web documents that builds on statistical-based methods and uses rule-based correction. The proposed system uses the classification model learned offline using a training set of human-labeled web documents. The web documents have many word-spacing errors and frequently no punctuation mark that indicates the end of sentence boundary. As sentence boundary candidates, the proposed method considers every Ending Eomis as well as punctuation marks. We optimize engine performance by selecting the best feature, the best training data, and the best classification algorithm. For evaluation, we made two test sets; Set1 consisting of articles and blog documents and Set2 of web community documents. We use F-measure to compare results on a large variety of tasks, Detecting only periods as sentence boundary, our basis engine showed 96.5% in Set1 and 56.7% in Set2. We improved our basis engine by adapting features and the boundary search algorithm. For the final evaluation, we compared our adaptation engine with our basis engine in Set2. As a result, the adaptation engine obtained improvements over the basis engine by 39.6%. We proved the effectiveness of the proposed method in sentence boundary detection.

The Effects of Instructions Using Analogies in Learning the Concept of Saturated Solution by Analogy Presentation Types and Verbal Learning Styles (포화 용액 개념 학습에서 비유 표현 방식과 언어적 학습 양식에 따른 비유 사용 수업의 효과)

  • This study investigated the effects of the instructions using analogies in learning the concept of saturated solution by the analogy presentation types and the verbal learning styles upon the mapping understanding, the mapping errors, and the perceptions of the instruction. Fifth graders (N=123) at an elementary school were selected and assigned to VA (n=63) and VPA (n=60) groups. As a pretest, a test on the verbal learning style was administered. The students in the VA group learned the target concept with a verbal analogy, while those in the VPA group learned it with a verbal/pictorial analogy. After the students learned it, a mapping understanding test was administered. The students in the VPA group also administered the test on the perceptions of the instruction and some of them were interviewed in depth. The results revealed that the scores of the students with strong verbal learning preference in the VPA group were significantly lower than those in the VA group in the mapping understanding test. However, the scores of the students with weak verbal learning preference were not significantly different between the two groups. Five types of mapping errors were identified: failure to map, mismapping, rash mapping, impossible mapping, and mapping of a surficial feature. According to students' verbal learning styles, there were some differences in the frequencies of mapping errors in the two groups. Many students in the VPA group, regardless of their verbal learning styles, had positive perceptions of the instruction in various cognitive and motivational aspects. However, some of them also pointed out a few difficulties of the instruction. Educational implications of these findings are discussed.

The Effects of the Level of Enrichment for Analogies upon Students' Mapping and Conceptual Understanding in Concept Learning about Boyle's Law (보일의 법칙에 대한 개념 학습에서 비유의 부연 수준이 학생들의 대응 관계 이해 및 개념 이해에 미치는 영향)

  • This study investigated the effects of the level of enrichment for analogies upon students' mapping, conceptual understanding, and the types of mapping errors in concept learning about Boyle's Law. Analogical reasoning ability test was administered and the score was used as a blocking variable. Three types (simple, enriched, and extended analogies) of learning materials according to the level of enrichment for analogies were studied by randomly assigned middle school students, and a conceptions test and a mapping test were administered immediately. The retention tests of both were administered four weeks later. Analyses of the results revealed that there was no main effect in the level of enrichment for analogies, but there was interaction effect with analogical reasoning ability in the post test on mapping. And the score of enriched analogy group was significantly higher than those of simple analogy group, but the score differences among three groups were not significant in the retention test on conceptual understanding. The frequency of the total mapping errors in the simple analogy group was the highest, and the frequencies of most types of mapping errors in the enriched and the extended analogy groups were less than those in the simple analogy group. There were also some differences in the frequencies of mapping errors with respect to the level of analogical reasoning ability. Therefore, these results will help science teachers plan and practice instructions using analogy.

Unified Approach to Coefficient of Determination $R^2$ Using Likelihood Distancd (우도거리에 의한 결정계수 $R^2$에의한 통합적 접근)

  • Coefficient of determination $R^2$ is most frequently used descriptive measure in practical use of linear regression analysis. But there have been controversies on defining this measure in the cases of linear regression without the intercept, weighted linear regression and robust linear regression. Several authors such as Kvalseth(1985) and Willet and Singer(1988) proposed many variations of $R^2$ to meet the situations. However, theire measures are not satisfactory due to the lack of a universal principle. In this study, we propose a unfied approach to defining the coefficient of determination $R^2$ using the concept of likelihood distance. This new measure is in good accordance with typical $R^2$ in linear regression and, moreover, can be applied to nonlinear regression models and generalized linear models such as logit and log-linear models.

Wild bootstrap Ljung-Box test for autocorrelation in vector autoregressive and error correction models (벡터자기회귀모형과 오차수정모형의 자기상관성을 위한 와일드 붓스트랩 Ljung-Box 검정)

  • We consider the wild bootstrap Ljung-Box (LB) test for autocorrelation in residuals of fitted multivariate time series models. The asymptotic chi-square distribution under the IID assumption is traditionally used for the LB test; however, size distortion tends to occur in the usage of the LB test, due to the conditional heteroskedasticity of financial time series. In order to overcome such defects, we propose the wild bootstrap LB test for autocorrelation in residuals of fitted vector autoregressive and error correction models. The simulation study and real data analysis are conducted for finite sample performance.

  • 본 연구는 낙동강 유역의 대표지점별 과거 수문자료의 타당성을 검토하고, 발생된 오류에 대해서는 표준화된 방법으로 수정 보완하여 하천유량 적정관리를 위한 기초 통계자료를 구축하는데 그 목적이 있다. 따라서 수문자료의 정확성 확보와 향후 자료의 활용성을 증대하기 위하여 낙동강홍수통제소의 수문관측소를 중심으로 수위, 수위-유량관계곡선식, 유량자료를 다양한 근거자료 및 수문자료의 특성 등을 고려하여 기초적인 통계자료 구축을 위해 노력하였다. 과거자료를 검토한 결과 2000년대를 기점으로 수위자료의 정확도가 향상되는 것으로 판단하였으며, 사용자에게 신뢰성 있는 자료를 제공하기 위하여 2000년도 이후의 수위자료와 수위-유량관계곡선식을 수집하여 검토?분석하였고, 자료 보완을 통하여 신뢰성 있는 유량자료를 구축할 수 있도록 하였다. 대상지점 12개소에 대하여 취득기간별에 따른 각종 기초통계 특성에 대하여 요약 정리하였다. 자료의 취득률은 대부분 90% 이상의 양호한 결과를 나타내었지만, 몇몇 지점에서는 수위자료의 불안정으로 인하여 60% 이하를 나타내는 지점 또한 존재하였다. 연평균 손실고는 평균강수량에서 유출고를 뺀 값을 나타내고, 이에 대한 유출률을 산정하였다. 또한 취득기간 동안의 평균 풍 평 저 갈수량을 분석하였다. 치수 및 이수 측면을 고려하여 최고유량과 이에 대한 발생일을 조사하였으며, 최저유량의 경우는 7일 평균 최저유량과 이에 대한 발생일을 조사하였다. 최저유량 발생일은 7일 중 중간일을 기준으로 표시하였고 조석이나, 지속적인 배수의 영향을 받는 지점은 홍수위 및 홍수량에 대해서만 산출하였다. 비록 2000년 이전 자료에 대해서는 현실적인 한계로 인하여 검토를 실시하지 못하였으나, 최소 10년간의 자료에 대해서는 신뢰성을 확보하기 위한 노력을 기울였으며, 이러한 경험으로 다시는 재현되는 않는 자연현상에 대한 현장단위에서의 관측 및 측정뿐만 아니라 이를 바탕으로 축적된 자료의 구축, 검증을 통한 DB 구축 등에 더욱 각고의 노력이 필요할 것으로 판단된다.

A Study on the Automation Algorithm to Identify the Geological Lineament using Spatial Statistical Analysis (공간통계분석을 이용한 지질구조선 자동화 알고리즘 연구)

  • Recently, tunneling under the seabed is becoming increasingly common in many countries. In Korea, there are proposals to tunnel from the mainland to Jeju Island. Safe construction requires geologic structures such as faults to be characterized during the design and construction phase; however, unlike on land, such structures are difficult to survey seabed. This study aims to develop an algorithm that uses geostatistics to automatically derive large-scale geological structures on the seabed. The most important considerations in this method are the optimal size of the moving window, the optimal type of spatial statistics, and determination of the optimal percentile standard. Finally, the optimal analysis algorithm was developed using the R program, which comprehensibly presents variations in spatial statistics. The program allows the type and percentile standard of spatial statistics to be specified by the user, thus enabling an analysis of the geological structure according to variations in spatial statistics. The geotechnical defense-training algorithm shows that a large, linear geological lineament is best visualized using a $3{\times}3$ moving window and a 10% upper standard based on the moving variance value and fractile. In particular, setting the fractile criterion to the upper 0.5% almost entirely eliminates the error values from the contour image.
