  • Nowdays electrokinetic technique has been applied to supply nutrients and TEAs for in-situ bioremediation. However the Injection characteristics under electrical field have not been examined in various soil types. Therefore, The characteristics of electrokinetic injection into kaolinite and sand are investigated. During the 17 d of processing, There was a gradual increase in ammonium (nutrient) concentration from the anode compartment. However the ammonium concentration at the cathode increased beyond that at the anode in sand. A relatively constant profile of sulfate (TEA) was achieved specifically, the final sulfate concentration in each specimen were different. When EK injection technique is implemented in field, the most important consideration should be an assessment of the injection characteristics with respect to the soil types.

  • A probabilistic approach for evaluation of prediction of the strains using Lade's single surface constitutive model was employed, based on first-order approximate mean and variance. Several experiments such as isotropic compression and drained triaxial compression tests were conducted to examine the variabilities of soil parameters for Lade's model. By taking into account the results of the experimental data such as mean values and standard deviations of soil parameter's, a new probabilistic approach, which explains the uncertainty of computed strains, is applied. The magnitude of the COV for each parameter and the correlation coefficient between the two parameters can be effectively used for reducing the number of the parameters for the model. It is concluded that Lade's single surface constitutive model is surperior model for the prediction of the strain, because the COV of strains is under the "0.51".

  • On the basis of data obtained from forest road collapsed due to a heavy rainfall, this study carried out to evaluate the cutting slope failure factors of forest road by using Quantification theory(II). The results were summarized as follows. The factors on cutting slope failure was ranked in the order of cutting slope length, soil type, aspect, cutting slope gradients and slope gradients. And the slope failure was mainly occurred under such conditions as cutting slope length longer than 8m, soil type with soil, aspect of N, cutting slope gradients steeper than 600 and slope gradients greater than $35{\sim}40^{\circ}$.

  • Dynamic compaction is a ground improvement technique which is particularly effective for loose granular soils. It has also been used successfully to the cohesive soils with high void ratio, and wastes and fills. For the design of dynamic compaction method, prediction of depth of improvement is very important. The depth of improvement is influenced not only by compaction energy but also by many parameters such as grid spacing, soil property, degree of saturation and site conditions. Based on the test results, the depth of improvement were evaluated with considering compaction energy, soil type and ground water level.

• Most of the landslides triggered by intensive rainfall on natural slope occur serious damages of human beings and properties. There have been many landslides since 1991 in Gyeonggi province. The influential factors are rainfall, topography, geology and soil properties. There were 660 landslides occurred by intensive rainfall as much as 250mm at Yongin and Anseong area from Tuly 19th to luly 21st,1991 This study surveyed location, topography, geology, geometry of the landslide and rainfall at the area and analyzed occurrence characteristics of the landslides. Most of the landslides occurred on the soil layer above the bed rock. They showed changes of landslide types from translational slides at the head part to flow at the central part. The landslides have relatively small magnitude of which length is shorter than 50m. In order to identify characteristics of landslides dependent on soil conditions, geotechnical properties of soil were evaluated by laboratory tests using soil samples which were collected on slided area and not-slided area. Soil properties of the slided area show high percentage of coarse material such as gravel and sand. However, soil of the not-slided area is mainly composed of fine material such as silt and clay. Permeability coefficients of the slided area are higher than those of the not-slided area.

  • As a part of Load and Resistance Factor Design(LRFD) code development in Korea, in this paper an intensive reliability analysis was performed to evaluate reliability levels of the two static bearing capacity methods for driven steel pipe piles adopted in Korean Standards for Structure Foundations by the representative reliability methods of First Order Reliability Method(FORM) and Monte Carlo Simulation(MCS). The resistance bias factors for the two static design methods were evaluated by comparing the representative measured bearing capacities with the design values. In determination of the representative bearing capacities of driven steel pipe piles, the 58 data sets of static load tests and soil property tests were collected and analyzed. The static bearing capacity formula and the Meyerhof method using N values were applied to the calculation of the expected design bearing capacity of the piles. The two representative reliability methods(FORM, MCS) based computer programs were developed to facilitate the reliability analysis in this study. Mean Value First Order Second Moment(MVFOSM) approach that provides a simple closed-form solution and two advanced methods of FORM and MCS were used to conduct the intensive reliability analysis using the resistance bias factor statistics obtained, and the results were then compared. In addition, a parametric study was conducted to identify the sensibility and the influence of the random variables on the reliability analysis under consideration.

  • Determination of design parameters of composite ground including colluvial soil layer is far difficult because the maximum particle size of such a soil is remarkably large and particle distribution may vary from area to area. The stress-strain behavior of colluvial soils is in fact dependent upon the engineering characteristics at the boundary between coarse and fine materials. However, strength parameters are in general determined based on the characteristics of fine material, which causes an underestimation of such parameters. In this study, strength parameters of colluvial soil are evaluated by means of BIMROCK model curve. In addition, limit equilibrium analysis is carried out to verify the rational shear strength evaluation.

  • A probabilistic method was employed to compare the prediction accuracy of axial and volumetric strains of Lade's double surface model with that of single surface model. Several experiments were conducted to examine the variabilities of soil parameters for two models using Back-ma river sand. Mean values and standard deviations of soil parameters obtained from experimental data were used for the evaluation of the uncertainty of analyzed strains by the first order approximation. It is shown that the variabilities of parameters in the single surface model are more consistent than those of the double surface model. However, in the accuracy of axial strain by probabilistic analysis, double surface model is more stable than single surface model. It is also shown that two models are excellent in view of the accuracy of the volumetric strain. The method given in this paper may be effectively utilized to estimate the constitutive model because other results of the comparison of two models coincide with those of this paper.
