  • This study was conducted to quantify the soil respiratory $CO_2$ emission (SR) in an apple orchard and to determine its relationship with key environmental factors such as air temperature, soil temperature and soil moisture content. Experiment was made over the period from 23 April 2007 to 31 March 2008 in 'Fuji' apple orchard of National Institute of Horticultural and Herbal Science in Suwon, Gyeonggi-do, Korea. The SR was measured by using the automatic opening/closing chamber system based on a closed method. Diurnal variations in SR showed an increase around 0700 hours with increasing soil temperature, its peak between 1400 and 1500 hours, and then a gradual decrease thereafter. Daily variations in SR depended largely on soil and air temperatures over the year, ranging from 0.8 to 13.7 g $CO_2$ $m^{-2}d^{-1}$. During the rainy spell in summer (July$\sim$Autumn) with higher temperature and more precipitation, the SR was lower than that in the spring (May$\sim$June) with moderate temperature. The SR showed a significant exponential relationship with soil temperature ($r^2=0.800$) and air temperature ($r^2=0.805$), but not with soil moisture content ($r^2=0.160$). The $Q_{10}$ values of SR with annual soil temperature and air temperature were 2.0 and 1.9, respectively. The annually integrated SR was 19.6 ton $CO_2$ $ha^{-1}$.

  • The objectives of this study was to obtain the basic information for reasonable management of soil ecosystem damaged by pine wilt disease. Soil temperature and moisture content were $15.3{^{\circ}C}$ and 11.5% at whole-cut site, $14.4{^{\circ}C}$ and 13.5% at partial-cut site, and $13.7{^{\circ}C}$ and 14.8% at control site, respectively. The content of soil organic matter throughout the study period ranged from 2.11 to 2.64% at whole-cut site, 2.26 to 3.33% at partial-cut site, and 2.27 to 3.10% at control. Soil respiration rates showed seasonal fluctuations increasing in summer, which showed positive correlations between soil respiration and soil temperature. Average soil respiration were 0.24, 0.36 and $0.32gCO_{2}/m^{2}/hr$ at whole-cut site, partial-cut site, and control, respectively. $Q_{10}$ values ranged from 2.39 to 2.68 at Pinus densiflora stands damaged by pine wilt disease. Annual soil respiration rate at whole-cut site, partial-cut site and control were 8.1, 15.6 and $14.6tCO_{2}/ha/yr$, respectively.

  • In greenhouse, a mixed solution of Mn-54, Co-60, Sr-85 and Cs-137 was applied to the soil of culture boxes 2 days before sowing cucumber and at 4 different times during its growth for measuring their transfer factors (TFs) for fruit and migration in soil. TFs varied with radionuclide, application time and harvest time by factor of up to about 60. Variations in TFs with application time showed different patterns among radionuclides. TFs decreased on the whole in the order of Sr-85 > Mn-54 > Co-60 > Cs-137. TFs of Mn-54, Co-60 and Cs-137 mixed with topsoil before sowing were a little higher than those for the soil-surface application made at an early growth stage while no difference in Sr-85 TF was found. After harvest, soil concentrations of the radionuclides applied at an early growth stage were examined. They decreased with increasing soil depth and 80${\sim}$99% of the radioactivity remained in the top 3cm. Soil pemeation of the radionuclides migration decreased in the order of Sr-85 > Mn-54 > Co-60 > Cs-137. The present data can be utilized in estimating radionuclide concentration in cucumber fruit, taking proper measures for its harvest and consumption and designing the best way of soil decontamination following an radioactive deposition during the cucummber growing season.

  • The test method of aerobic transformation in soil has established based on international test guideline (OECD TG 307). And then, the case study was conducted with [$^{14}C$]butachlor. Butachlor is commonly used herbicide in Korea. [$^{14}C$]Butachlor was treatrd $6.83mgKg^{-1}$ in loamy soil. The treated soil was incubated in flow-through system for 60 days. The mass balance of applied radioactivity (AR) ranged from 91.1 to 95.5% and from 93.0% to 97.7% for non-sterile and sterile soils, respectively. In non-sterile soil, the concentration of [$^{14}C$]butachlor was declined from 94.4% AR at 0 day to 8.4% AR at 60 days after treatment. 2-Chloro-2',6'-diethylacetanilide was the major degradation product detected in soil extract. The calculated $DT_{50}$ and $DT_{90}$ of butachlor were 10.4 days and 34.6 days, respectively. $^{14}CO_2$ and non-extractable soil residue were increased up to 3.5% and 43.5% AR at 60 DAT. There is no significant decrease of the [$^{14}C$]butachlor through the incubation period in sterile soil.

  • This study investigated the effects of elevated $CO_2$ and nitrogen addition on the anaerobic decomposition mediated by microorganisms to determine the microbial metabolic pathways in the degradation of organic matters of the sediments. There were statistically significant differences(P < 0.05) in the rates between denitrification and methanogenesis upon increased $CO_2$ concentration, nitrogen addition, in the presence of plants. Based on the assumption that anaerobic degradation of organic matter mainly occurs through denitrification, iron reduction, and methanogenesis, methanogenesis is the dominant pathways in the decomposition of organic matter under the condition of elevated $CO_2$ and nitrogen addition. In addition, the altered environment increased anaerobic carbon decomposition. Therefore, it can be concluded that freshwater wetland sediments have positive effects on the global warming by the increased methanogenesiss as well as increased anaerobic carbon decomposition.

  • This study compared soil CO2 efflux rates after fertilization, in Pinus densiflora and Quercus variabilis stands. Compound fertilizers were applied to the forest floor in March 2016, following a one-year calibration period (from March 2015 to February 2016). In situ soil CO2 efflux rates were measured every month during the two-year study periods, using an infrared gas analyzer with a closed chamber system. Mean annual soil CO2 efflux rates were higher following fertilizer application in the P. densiflora and Q. variabilis stands (P. densiflora: 2.180 μmol m-2 s-1; Q. variabilis: 1.977 μmol m-2 s-1) as compared with the rates measured during the calibration period (P. densiflora: 1.620 μmol m-2 s-1; Q. variabilis: 1.557 μmol m-2 s-1). The mean annual soil CO2 efflux rates in the unfertilized treatments of both stands were not significantly different between the two-year study periods. The Q10 values of fertilized treatments in Q. variabilis stands were higher in the fertilization period (3.41) than in the calibration period (3.14), whereas the Q10 values in P. densiflora stands did not change between the fertilization and calibration periods. The Q10 values of unfertilized treatments in the Q. variabilis stands were lower during the 2016-2017 period (3.69), than in the 2015-2016 period (3.85), whereas the Q10 values in P. densiflora stands were higher during the 2016-2017 period (3.65), than in the 2015-2016 period (3.15). These results indicate that the increase in soil CO2 efflux rates in P. densiflora stands could be more sensitive to fertilization compared with the rates in Q. variabilis stands.

  • The effects of soil acidification on the photosynthetic activity of Quercus acutissima seedlings were investigated. We measured the growth and photosynthetic activity of the seedlings in relation to soil acidification. The dry weights of the seedlings were reduced according to the amount of $H^+$ in the soil. The concentrations of Al in needles at the 90 meq $H^+$ were significantly higher than those at the control. The contents of chlorophyll in needles at 90 meq $H^+$ were significantly lower than those at the control. The net photosynthetic rates of the seedlings in the acidified soil were reduced by increasing the amount of $H^+$ to the soil. The carboxylation efficiencies(CE) of photosynthesis were reduced in the seedlings grown in the acidified soil. These results suggested that the soil acidification induced the inhibition of photochemical reactions and $CO_2$ fixation of photosynthesis.

  • Quantification of the ecosystem respiration is essential in understanding the carbon cycling of natural and disturbed landscapes. Soil respiration and some environmental factors which affect soil respiration were investigated in a Larix leptolepis plantation inKongju, Korea. Soil respiration was measured at midday of the $15^{th}$ and $30^{th}$ day of every month from May to December in a non-cutting area (Control) and a cutting area (Treatment) with IRGA Soil Respiration Analyzer. Throughout the study period, average soil temperature and water content were $23.3{\pm}0.5^{\circ}C$ and $27.76{\pm}7.12%$ for control, and $25.9{\pm}3.1^{\circ}C$ and $24.55{\pm}5.12%$ for treatment, respectively. There was a positive correlation ($R^2$=0.8905) between soil respiration and soil temperature in the study area. However, there was no significant correlation between soil respiration and soil moisture ($R^2$=0.4437). The seasonal soil respiration increased in the summer and decreased in the winter. In August, maximum soil respirations in the control and treatment areas were $0.82{\pm}0.13$ and $1.32{\pm}0.10$ $gCO_2{\cdot}^{-2}{\cdot}r^{-1}$, respectively. Total amounts of $CO_2$ evolution in the control and treatment areas from May to December in 2008 were 2,419.2 and 3,610.8 $CO_2g{\cdot}m^{-2}$, respectively. The amount of soil respiration in the treatment area was 49.3% greater than in the control. Increased soil respiration in the treatment area may be due to increased soil temperature, which drives increased microbial decomposition. According to our present investigation, forest cutting will increase the atmospheric $CO_2$ by increasing soil respiration.

  • Monitoring of $CO_2$ release through the ground surface is essential to confirm the safety of carbon storage projects. We conducted a feasibility study of the multi-channel surface-soil $CO_2$-concentration monitoring (SCM) system as a soil $CO_2$ monitoring tool with a small scale injection test. The background concentrations showed the distinct diurnal variation. The negative relation of $CO_2$ with temperature and the low $CO_2$ concentrations during the day imply that surface-soil $CO_2$ depends on photosynthesis and respiration. After 4.2 kg of $CO_2$ injection (1 m depth for 29 minutes), surface-soil $CO_2$ concentrations increased in the all five chambers, which were located less than 2.8 m of distance from each other. The $CO_2$ concentrations seem to be recovered to the background around 4 hours after the injection ended. To determine the leakage, the data from Chamber 2 and 5 with low increase rates were used for statistical analyses. Coefficient of variation for 30 minutes ($CV_{30min}$.) is efficient to determine a leakage signal, with reflecting the fast change in $CO_2$ concentrations. Consequently, SCM and $CV_{30min}$ could be applied for an efficient monitoring tool to detect $CO_2$ release through the ground surface. Also, this study provides ideas for establishing action steps after leakage detection.
