  • This study was aimed at finding out the effect of soil conditioners on soil structural properties, soil water movements and soil losses. Sandy loam and silt loam soils were treated with two different kinds of soil conditioners, hydrophobic Bitumen 0.4% or hydrophilic Uresol 0.6%, and then various physical characteristics of the treated and untreated aggregates were determined. The results are summarized as follows: 1. By the soil conditioner treatment, Bitumen 0.4% or Uresol 0.6%, the aggregate stability was increased to 1.650-3.450 as compared to 0.275-0.417 of untreated soil and the sedimented bulk density was decreased. 2. Air-water permeability ratio of sandy loam was decreased to 2.2 by Uresol treatment as compared to untreated soil 3.8. In case of silt loam, it was decreased to 6.9 and 5.3 by Bitumen and Uresol treatment as compared to untreated 9.4, and water permeability of treated soil continued high value for 40 days. 3. Air-water permeability ratio was sharply enhanced as the structure instability index increased, but the ratio increased very smoothy after the index over 1. 4. The soil moisture retention was increased 2 to 6% by Uresol treatment, but it was decreased 1 to 3% by Bitumen treatment.

  • The vegetation structure and soil characteristics in Koelreuteria paniculata communities of Taean-Gun and Anmyondo were studied. The Koelreuteria paniculata community in Anmyondo had two vegetation layers, lower-tree and herb layers, but the Koelreuteria paniculata community in Anmyondo had three vegetation layers, subtree, shrub, and herb layers. Also the Koelreuteria paniculata was only the species of subtree layers in the Koelreuteria paniculata community of Anmyondo, but the subtree layer in the Koelreuteria paniculata community of Taean-Gun consisted of Pinus thunbergii, Cornus walteri, Celtis jessoensis, Celtis sinensis, and Evodia danielii. The soil organic matter, total N, available P, CEC, and exchangeable K, Ca, Mg, and Na concentrations were greater in the two Koelreuteria paniculata community than in the adjacent forest. The range of soil pH in the two Koelreuteria paniculata communities were 6.3-7.0, but those in adjacent forests were 4.7-5.5. [Dierssen scale, Vegetation classification, Forest soil] .

  • The protecting-chamber for a standing Buddha of Mireuk-ri temple site at Jungwon is composed of granite of Cretaceous age which mainly consists of quartz, perthite, plagioclase, and biotite with minor amounts of muscovite, apatite, chlorite, sericite and opaque mineral. There are abundant cracks which may be developed by strong weathering and differential loading by structural unbalances of the whole protecting-chamber. Cracks can be divided into three types based on genesis as those formed by exfoliation, intrinsic, and pressure. The exfoliation occurred along the onion structure of the granite. The pressure cracks are generally superimposed on the exfoliation ones, which might be developed by structural unbalance of the protecting-chamber resulted from differential loading in places. The structural unbalance may be due to change in physical properties of the rocks according to strong weathering, differential settling of basement soil by difference in loading in places of protecting-chamber, westward creep of the basement soil below the West wall and related different resistance of the basement soil against the loading, and partial depression of the West wall. For the conservation of the protecting-chamber, it must be considered the method of stabilizing the basement and treatment of the cracks.

  • A culture-dependent survey of bacterial community in the soil-root system of red pepper and tomato was conducted by dilution plate count method. The bacterial community within soil was not different from that of rhizoplane. However, the populations of fluorescent, pseudomonads were higher in rhizoplanes than in soils and higher in healthy rhizoplanes than in Phytophthora disease-infested rhizoplanes. The bacterial community of the pepper cropped soil and rhizoplanes was very similar to that of the tomato-cropped soil and rhizoplanes. Among 285 identified bacterial colonies, most colonies were belong to two groups by fatty acid analyses: 52% of the 285 colonies were belong to low G + C gram positive bacteria group. Bacillus spp. and 33% were belong to high G + C gram positive bacteria group. In order to use beneficial microorganisms to agro-ecosystem, these data of field trials should be intensively accumulated.

  • Bare-topped thufur is called as frost scars, implying the rupturing stage of vegetated mounds, Field observations and measurements provide empirical information on the process and factors of thufur disintegration in Mt. Halla, Initial bare patches on mound apexes are scaled up by continuous removal of soil and vegetation, resulting in the formation of crater-like thufur, Frost action plays a primary role in thufur disintegration, In particular, pipkrake loosens soil particles within the bare patches and subsequently accelerates the degradation of vegetated mounds during periods with frequent diurnal freeze-thaw cycle and high soil moisture, Deflation also has an impact on thufur breakup in that the bare patches usually lack upper dark brown soil and are covered with granules, Withered shrubs such as Juniperus chinensis var. sargentii are frequently observed in frost scars and disrupted mounds, indicating that thufur disintegration has been probably influenced by global warming.

  • This study examined microbial community structures (MCSs) according to environmental factors through DGGE analysis and comparison in various soils collected from near army bases and gas stations. As a result, the similarities based on DGGE band profiles showed the closer relationship in regional properties than in pollution characteristics, probably due to the degree of weak contamination. The highly contaminated samples with oil revealed low MCS similarities with others in the same region and very low with all the other samples in the other regions. Thus the microbial community structure would more be affected by region-based natural factors than by contamination factors in case of minor pollution. All the dominant culturable bacterial species were involved in firmicutes or high GC Gram+ in a major portion of soil samples and the highly oil-contaminated samples contained Arthrobacter, Bacillus, Methylobacterium, Clavibacter, Streptomyces and Nocardia as reported genera, and Leifsonia as a unreported genus.
