  • Geometrical design variables are numerically investigated to improve aerodynamic performance of the supersonic impulse turbine of a turbopump in a liquid rocket engine. Aerodynamic redesign was performed for maximization of the blade power. Four design variables considered are blade angle, blade thickness and radii of upper and lower arc blade with appropriate constraints. A fast Navier-Stokes solver was developed and Chien's k-$\varepsilon$ turbulence modelling was used for turbulence closure. In initial shape, a flow separation was found in the middle of blade chord. However, it disappeared in final shape via its geometrical design variable change. About 3.2 percent of blade power was increased from this research.

  • An experimental study on a rotating turbine is conducted with various incidence angles in order to find an optimum incidence angle. The incidence angle is an important design parameter in turbine blade design. however, most of experiments were conducted in a linear or annual cascade row. The suggested incidence angles from the experiments conducted in cascade rows could be unsuitable as a design parameter in the design of rotating parts. In this study, various incidence angles are applied and the turbine performance is measured in a rotating state. Experimental results show that the incidence on the rotor has a great influence on the turbine efficiency. The range of applicable incidence becomes narrow when the turbine operates at high input power. In the case of the tested rotor, the optimum incidence is about $-12^{\circ}$.

  • Numerical analyses of two-stage turbopump turbines were conducted. One of the candidates for the 1st rotor was selected based on the result of the numerical investigation. Besides, the effects of the stator height on the turbine performance were studied. Finally, the performance of the entire two-stage turbine was predicted by numerical calculation. The result showed that the two-stage turbine produces more specific power than a one-stage turbine.

  • An axial-type turbine design technology is developed. In order to design one-stage turbine, the preliminary design method is applied, and then design parameters are chosen after analyzing gas properties within the turbine passage using the streamline curvature method. Stator blade is designed using C4 profile, and rotor blade is designed using shape parameters. Stator is manufactured as an integral type and rotor is manufactured to be disassembled from the disc for changing blade incidence angle. The output power from the rotor is measured with various RPM and input power. Experimental results show that the maximum efficiency of turbine rotor is obtained on the design point, and the output power is proportionally decreased with the negative incidence angle even the test turbine is a reaction turbine. The efficiency of turbine rotor is decreased to 5% by $7.5^{\cire}$ negative incidence angle from the designed value.

  • Even though the variable pitch control of a wind turbine blade is known as an effective component for power control over the rated wind speed, it has limited applicability to small wind turbines because of its relatively high cost on the price of small wind turbine. Instead, stall control is generally applied in the blade design without any additional cost. However, stall delay can frequently be caused by high turbulence around the turbine blade, and it can produce control failures through excessive rotational speed and overpowering the electrical generator. Therefore, a passive pitch control module should be considered, where the pitch moves with the aerodynamic forces of the blade and returns by the elastic restoring force. In this study, a method to calculate the pitch moment, torque, and thrust based on the lift and drag of the rotating blade wing was demonstrated, and several effective wing shapes were reviewed based on these forces. Their characteristics will be estimated with variable wind speed and be utilized as basic data for the design of the passive pitch control module.

  • For a given axial turbine blade, reverse design method is developed to improve blade efficiency, optimize blade profile, or repair parts etc. In this process, design parameters for designing axial turbine blade are induced. The induced design parameters are as follows; ellipse at leading edge, radios of trailing edge, axial chord, tangential chord, wedge angle at the inlet, and unguided turning angle. Suction and pressure surfaces of turbine blade are described by cubic polynomials. Two sample blades we chosen and their blade profiles are measured at the mean radius. Values of design parameters for sample blades are obtained by the reverse design method. Re-designed blade profiles using calculated design parameters are compared with the measured data, and they show good agreement. So, the developed design method could be applied to design general turbine blades. Various blade shapes are designed, and they show that designed blade profiles can be adjusted by controlling design parameters.

  • In this study, one dimensional aerodynamic and structural study of a partial admission turbo pump turbine was performed. A turbine consists of a nozzle, rotor, outlet guide vanes. The aerodynamic characteristics of each component was derived from the governing equation and validated from the CFD calculations. One-dimensional basic design such as velocity triangles was conducted from the mean line analysis and modified from the 2-D and 3-D CFD analysis. The blade profile was determined by the CFD optimization. The thermal stress analysis and structural analysis are needed to be studied in the next design stage.

  • The blades of supersonic turbines with low aspect ratio are usually designed to have the same cross sectional shape in radial direction. The profile diameter definition of turbines may lead to produce unintended flow passage area variations resulting performance degradation. In this paper, the effects of profile diameter definition on the supersonic impulse turbine performance have been investigated. Computational results of three different profile diameters are compared. It has been found that flow passage area variation can be achieved according to designer's intention when blade profile is defined at rotor tip diameter. Furthermore, the turbine blade profile defined at rotor tip showed better performance than the others.
